When I saw a London revival of "Carousel" roughly eight months ago, I was very disappointed. The actresses playing Julia, Carrie and Netty were good enough but apart from that and "June is Bustin' out all over", nothing much had much spark to it, including tacky animations and a highly uninteresting Billy Bigelow. While this recording cannot gloss over the fact that "Carousel" seemed much more preachy and passé than I had expected, it does at least present the still glorious score to its best effect. But of course, the five principal singers here all are very well chosen. Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones are just right for "If I Loved you" and he also has enough presence to deliver an able "Soliloquy". Claramae Turner is both grande-dame and accessible enough to sell "You'll never Walk Alone" and "June is Bustin' out all over". And Barbara Ruick is charming in "You're a Queer One, Julie Jordan!" and "Mister Snow", while Robert Rounseville (Broadway's first Candide) is an attractive Mr. Snow who assists her well in "When the Children are Asleep". Well, "Carousel" will probably never be among my favorite shows but this recording is very haveable nonetheless.
