3.0 von 5 Sternen Cynical Heroine... Lacking in Romance 12. Dezember 2013
Von Judge Tabor - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Background: Caroline, Lady Ballister, was married at age 18 to a man she didn't love and who never gave her satisfaction in the marriage bed. Before she married, she was extremely infatuated with Lord Sutbridge who was 20 years old at the time. Now, she is a widow nearing age 30 with two young sons by her previous husband.

Her joyless marriage has contributed to Caroline's cynical and hardhearted attitude and her decision to never marry again. However, she does want to have a sexual relationship in part because she never received sexual satisfaction with her husband. She feels that her most attractive years are behind her but she does want something out of life other than what she has known.

Since Lord Sutbridge's sister, Julia, is her best friend, she sees him on a regular basis. When she approaches him about a relationship on her terms, he turns her down. Apparently, he has wanted her since he was 20 and was taken by surprise when she married. He has longed for her since that time but he is ready for marriage and all that it involves. In fact, he strongly desires Caroline but only if she will marry him.

*Spoilers* Initially, Sutbridge tells Caroline marriage is the only way he will have her but changes his mind thinking she might come around to the idea of marriage if he can get her with child. So, they do indeed begin an affair. Caroline is very controlling and basically lets him know she will tell him when she wants him, etc. This doesn't go over very well with Sutbridge and they have a rocky start in their romance - if you could call it that. In my opinion, there was very little romance in their relationship except for the fact that Sutbridge wanted her and said he would be faithful to her. At least that was something.

In order for them to actually come together, Julia told Caroline that Sutbridge had become engaged to another woman and only then did Caroline realize that she loved and wanted Sutbridge. I realize this book is a novella and there isn't a lot of room for character development. However, to the extent these characters were developed, I found very little to actually admire or to enjoy about their personalities or relationship. This story didn't pique my interest much at all. I give the book three stars instead of two because even though the story-line was one I found uninteresting, the basic writing skills and editing were pretty good. I do wish writers of romance novels would realize that romance, desire, friendship, kindness, gentle touches, etc. are way more romantic than sexual details. In my opinion, the aforementioned elements are conducive to tugs on the heart and vital to keeping a story in the reader's mind long after the book is gathering dust or in the case of my Kindle, stuck in the "archived" section.

2.0 von 5 Sternen long and plodding 24. Januar 2014

On the insistence of her dear friend, Caroline, Lady Ballister decides to take a lover for a no strings attached affair. And what better candidate than the man who broke her heart ten years ago, the infamous rake John, Duke of Sutbridge, but he has other plans.

He has wanted Caroline for ten years and now that she’s a widow, John wants to make her his wife. Caroline doesn’t want to be trapped in marriage again. Sutbridge knows he has a lot of work ahead of him, but if he can get Caro to agree to be his wife, then it will be all worth it.

What many people don’t realize is that a short story is often harder to pull off than a full-length novel. An author has to pack a lot of story and a lot of love into only a few pages. Unfortunately, not everyone can pull it off.

“Caroline and the Duke” feels like a novel, but not in a good way. The story felt long and plodding. The characters were boring and the heroine’s constant denial to marry Sutbridge seems too great in comparison to his declarations. In the end they only end up together due to jealousy caused by the manipulation perpetrated by the heroine’s best friend who is also the hero’s sister.

After her husbands death, Caroline is free. Now she can do as she pleases, and what pleases her is to have an affair with John Duke of Sutbridge. But he has something different in mind.

This is a really short read, a great introduction to this author if you haven't read her before. She has a very flowing style and packs this story with detail. It may be short but you're not short changed.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Absolutely LOVED it. 21. Mai 2014

CAROLINE AND THE DUKE: A REGENCY SHORT STORY runs 23 pages minus front- and back-matter. This short is rich with themes of second-chances (first love), romantic love in an era with much of the aristocracy married without it, and trust. The book is set in December, but doesn't have overbearing themes of Christmas/holidays and could be enjoyed at any time of year.

I found the interaction between Caroline, a widow, and Sutbridge (the Duke she's loved for 10 years, throughout her travesty of a marriage) to be deliciously romantic. The touches, the shared glances, the longing that has weathered 10 years, her marriage to another and two sons she bore to that husband. I found John (the Duke, Sutbridge)'s capitulation to Caro's terms to be well-motivated and highly believable. The secondary character, Julia (the duke's sister and Caro's longtime friend) adds delightful dimension to this short story with truly very few characters. Julia meddles a bit, shows her displeasure with Caro's actions, urges this pair together, as it's finally their opportunity for love.

I thought Caroline's motivations for wanting an affair in her widowhood to be well-motivated, her fears and hesitancy to shackle herself with another husband completely believable. I found it endearing that John/ Sutbridge had dalliances, certainly, but had never married....because Caroline was the only woman he wanted to take to wife.

This short story had a captivating blend of dialogue, rich setting of a Season, a past between the characters, and their hopeful future. I'm definitely interested in reading more by Sabrina Darby. Kudos to the author!

Sensuality Level: PG-13 (not overly graphic, but highly sensual)
Language: PG

Highly recommended to fans of Regency Romantic shorts and novellas.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Caroline and her Duke is a sweet short story 22. Dezember 2013

What happens when a widowed lady and a duke finally submit to their des…a delightful short story from Sabrina Darby.

Lord Sutbridge has been friends with Caroline for the past 10 years and has been in love with her for just as long. She is the reason that he has yet to marry. Now that she is widowed he is determined to have her as his wife, but the lady has other plans. Lady Caroline is enjoying her freedom as a widow and has no plans to marry again. Caroline is interested in Sutbridge…just not for marriage. After enduring a horrible marriage, she is ready to find passion and love in the arms of man. She has her hopes set on Sutbridge but he is asking for more than she is ready to give.

I was initially interested in Caroline and The Duke because of its cover. It is one of the prettiest covers I have seen for a historical romance. The story is very well written with two great characters. There is just the right amount of tension between Caroline and Sutbridge. Sutbridge has been in love with Caroline for years and has been very angry that she married someone else and had children with him. Now that she is widowed he wants to marry her and have the life that should have been there’s years ago. I applauded Sutbridge for continuing to push Caroline, because they did belong together. I honestly felt horrible that they wasted 10 years of their life because she married someone else.

While I knew it was a short story…I still felt that it wasn’t enough. Caroline and John’s story really should have been a full length novel. I think the storyline is great and I felt disappointed when it was finished. I would have liked to know more of the reasons why she married so young, glimpses of their meetings in the past, etc. Aside from that Caroline and The Duke is a very enjoyable story. I hope to read more from this author in the future.
