A study of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is the most ancient of poisons - as old as the discovery of fire itself. Today we know a lot about carbon monoxide poisoning and how dangerous it is, and we should, by now, have developed strategies to avoid the danger. Unfortunately the lessons have not been learnt, as several of the papers in this volume relate. The papers represent a selection from those delivered at the Satellite Meeting of the IUTOX VIIIth International Congress of Toxicology held in Dijon, July 3rd-4th, 1998, on the subject, "Carbon Monoxide - The Unnoticed Poison of the 21st Century". Several of the papers were rewritten for this book or have been translated from their original French and all have been edited to a consistent style.
