Cancer research, insect biochemistry, and cell biology are not generally considered subjects for novelists. However, when the author is also a professor of chemistry at Stanford University and is known for synthesizing the first oral contraceptive, such subjects are not just appropriate--they're rich material for reflection. Like his protagonist, Professor I.C. Cantor, Djerassi is a "Renaissance Man"--scientist, musician, gourmet cook, and skillful writer of stories. His novel concerns the politics of scientific pressures--the race to publish first, the need to replicate experiments, and the necessity for unbiased hypothesis verification. Cantor's startling hypothesis on the etiology of cancer promise him a Nobel Prize, but issues of ambition, trust, and emotional blackmail must first be resolved. A recommended title; other novels dealing with science lack the realism Djerassi so ably provides.

This novel is the first volume in a tetralogy of novels in the rarely used genre of "science-in-fiction"--not to be confused with science fiction. (For further explanation, see Djerassi's home page). CANTOR'S DILEMMA came out in paperback in 1991 (Penguin-USA) and has had to be reprinted once or twice every year since then because it is now used as a text or supplementary reading in many colleges and universities (and even some high schools)to illuminate the highly tribal culture of contemporary research scientists. Of particular relevance are the ethical issues raised in this novel and the subsequent volumes (THE BOURBAKI GAMBIT and MENACHEM'S SEED).Though presented in the guise of fiction, they deal with urgent, timely real issues as indicated by the following title of one of Djerassi's lectures: "NOBLE SCIENCE AND NOBEL LUST: DISCLOSING TRIBAL SECRETS THROUGH SCIENCE-IN-FICTION." Queries as well as commentary or criticism are welcome via e-mail (djerassi@stanford.com).

Written by a successful scientist who experienced and lived by the rules of the contemporary scientific community, this well-told novel gives a lot more insight in how scientific awards and glory are actually "made" than many scientists might appreciate: In some aspects even more important than discovery, insight, progress are politics, relations, envy, mutual contacts. This is about human frailty and scientific life at its core. Excellent read for every scientist! Highly recommended. (not five stars because a little short, only very few characters well developed)

this book's reputation precedes inself but the actual book outdoes its reputation. wonderful and insightful and frightfully real. scary how the frailty of human nature is sometimes incompatible with the rigorous demands of scientific research. a must read for anyone in science

In many (chemistry) labs Cantor's Dilemma is considered common knowledge. All the feelings a scientist has after presenting a new piece of work (where experiments can be easily misinterpreted) are described. In this book the worst nightmare of a scientist happens.
If you think that all scientific publications are true or if four letter words offend you, you shouldn't read Cantor's Dilemma.
