Candle making may be simpler than you think, especially with the help of Paola Romanelli's
Candle Crafts. With solid basic coverage of dipped, rolled, molded, poured, and decorated candles, this straightforward guide provides a nice introduction to the field. Most of the designs are fairly standard but are nonetheless attractive, and the directions are supplemented with lots of how-to photos. Since this is primarily a beginner's title, more attention should have been paid to safety precautions; only once does the author mention the necessity of melting wax double-boiler style (and that all-important warning is buried under a heading called "Useful Tips"), and several projects encase candles in ribbon, raffia, paper, and other highly flammable materials without a word of caution. But by following Romanelli's instructions and using common sense about safety issues, even beginners can create a wide array of pretty candles.
