Jack's insurance firm begins to act strangely, pressuring him to settle the Vale claim. Jack Wade, an arson adjuster for California Fire and Life Mutual, understands the science of fire. What he doesn't understand is people. A dozen years ago, he was bounced from the sheriff's department on a bum rap, and ever since he's refused to let anything get "personal." But the house-fire death of wealthy young mother Pamela Vale becomes extremely personal when Jack learns she is the half-sister of his former lover, Lettie Del Rio. When the medical examiner tells Jack there was no smoke in the victim's lungs, he smells trouble; Pamela's estranged husband's eagerness to file a $1 million claim only confirms his suspicions. Others disagree; the sheriff's department hastily rules the fire an accidental death and makes it clear that alternative theories aren't welcome. Even Jack's company, which is looking at a huge payout, seems eager to sweep Pamela Vale under the rug. Jack's dogged pursuit of the truth generates additional opposition from the Southern California chapter of the Russian Mafia and a renegade Vietnamese gang. Find out if an emigré Russian mobster turned his wife & home to shishlik for the insurance money. Well worth the read, and one of the best examples of what life is sometimes like for an over achieving insurance adjuster. True in many respects especially the details. Gives respectability to a field that most people only encounter by accident and often come away from that experience with a negative opinion. A negative is one thing this book isn't!

"~Jack Wade is an arson investigator (tossed off the police force for perjury, brutality and framing a guilty man), and a really smart claims adjuster. Poor guy, he's also swimming with the sharks, and you have to read this book to the very end to understand the magnitude of betrayal that is the theme of this book. to find. And then the really good stuff begins. There is no extraneous detail in this book, and Winslow tells this story of massive deceit and betrayal with bone-dry wit. I've read many of Winslow's books, and they just keep getting better. After this book, you'll never look at insurance companies the same way again!

Simply put, this book is a wild ride through the world of fire and insurance from someone who knows what he's talking about. You wouldn't think that necessarily sounds exciting, but the characters are cool, real-life (if slightly over dramatized) people and you won't be able to put the book down. As for believability: WHO CARES! The book works! Indiana Jones got a little out of hand when Harrison Ford swam to the Nazi submarine - IT WAS STILL A GREAT MOVIE!
