Normally I am not at all a huge follower of YA books/stories. Could be because I am not a YA anymore and if I read all the experiences they are doing/having/feeling and how wise they are makes me always wonder. BUT not so in this book. The main character - Caleo - is really a 17 year old boy who never noticed in a good way how special he is. He is adorable and selfless and as soon as you start with the book you need to know what happens next to him. And not only he becomes close to your heart. All the characters are well defined and special in their own way. Actual I could not find anyone of the characters not unique and in their sense likeable.
The little love story and kind of coming out was written in a very sensible way which makes looking forward what is coming next.

The writing style was very fluently and so captivating that it was impossible for me to put the book away. And even then I looked for the second book which is/was also amazing!
James Crawford - Thank you very much for this story. Pls go on and make us happy with more of this kind of books.

We need more books like this one for YA readers!!!! 20. September 2012
Von Delphina - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I absolutely love the premise of this book. A leech is a "vampire", but not at all in the way we think of them. They take peoples energy so that they can use their gifts, which vary from leech to leech. Such a fresh idea for the very popular world of para. I was beyond excited about this book before it even was through edits, so I had very high expectations. I think that was why I found the beginning a bit slow. Once it took off, however..... what a ride. I never knew what was coming next. I really enjoyed so many of the characters in this book. My personal favorite was the Grandmother. She sure is an amazing woman. I am finding that to be a trend of mine; loving the grandmas. I must be getting old ;), I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next book in this series.

I would recommend this book for older teens and adults due to some violent content. There are two references to a case where a character was tortured and they gave me the willies. Also, the main character in this book was heavily bullied at school. There is no sexual content (one almost/maybe kiss), but there is a reference to a nudie magazine.

I was given a copy of this book.

Intriguing, nerve racking, & completely original! 4. Januar 2014
Von Albinomex ~ Jeni's Bookshelf - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
What a great story! Intriguing, nerve racking, & completely original! YA dystopian paranormal appropriate for any age. I could not put it down. The Leeches, the Blessed, the Humans...they all held my attention & peaked my curiosity. This book does brings up a few sensitive matters including bullying, sexual orientation, & a scene describing abuse someone suffered, all of which were brought up in a tasteful manner & not taken to the extreme. Caleo is a quiet shy teen who has been bullied in school most of his life for his pale skin & white hair. He has no idea how amazing he truly is or the power he holds. The twists repeatedly amazed me as I assumed I had it all figured out...quickly realizing I did not...never even saw some of those things coming. I'm really looking forward to reading Jack!

Such a Beautiful Cover & Good Premise but weak book 22. Juni 2013
Von Micah Dawson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Have you ever read a book that has a good enough Premise, the characters SEEM interesting and you are excited to read but as you read the writing just bothers you? That would be Caleo. I was hyped to read it and was quite disappointed in the end.

1. Characters
Caleo is the title character and the Lead Character.....As you can see by the cover and by the premise, he is a bit albino looking which of course gets him teased mercilessly. However, Caleo is not one to be bullied and he does have a pretty tough personality. Except the things with Caleo that annoyed me were that he just believed stuff too easily.

Someone tells you that you are a supernatural being...he questions it all for one sentence and suddenly is like "Okay, please help me." He automatically just believes the first person he met(who did try to attack him) was truly on his side only to discover..wait, this is a bad guy.

He was a cool and funny character but he just made dumb decisions.

Jack & Jillian(Sigh...really...) are the 2nd and third main characters. Jack for most of the book was just...there. I mean he was one dimensional(I assume since the 2nd book is called Jack, we get it from his POV and possible development). He wasn't bad but he wasn't good. He is Caleo's best friend(And Caleo's crush) and that's really all you can say about him. Jillian was slightly more interesting. She too was a bit one-dimensional....but i liked her sarcastic comebacks and wittiness. She was tough but like her brother, she was just....there. She didn't deserve as anything really except someone to just be in the way.

Nolan is my FAVORITE character...He is hot, Muscular, tough and he is blind but he has his own way of seeing and I loved how he was such a bad-ass character that still manage to have enough vulnerability and sensitiveness. He was blind but his power allowed him to see things differently. He swore to protect Caleo no matter what and it became a running joke that caleo has saved his life more than Nolan protected him. Nolan is the best part of this book because his scenes with Caleo were intense...you could feel the attraction on Caleo's part while wondering was Nolan merely being friendly or interested. The rivalry with Jack was a bit interesting...and like with Caleo, anytime Nolan shared a scene with Jack, he made Jack interesting.

The characters are decent(with Nolan being exceptional) but they just felt one-dimensional and at times stupid.

2. The Plot & Writing
It's a pretty simple Plot...Nothing ground-breaking or unique really...There are these people who are leeches who have the ability to sap the energy from other people(think vampires except they don't drink blood) and they each have supernatural abilities. Caleo's power deals with freezing things and Nolan's ability has him controlling water...

Caleo is someone who is chosen and seen as the one to stop the civil war brewing..He of course has no idea about his legacy and who he is and the course of the book shows Caleo coming to terms with who he is as a person and a leech and trying to protect his family from those who want to cause him harm.

No, the plot is not entirely original but it sounded interesting....and it was interesting. Except the writing felt a bit weak. It read like someone who was writing a fanfic or someone doing something for a creative writing class.

Any tension that was built up.....was deflated a paragraph later. For example, Caleo and his friends suffer a terrible loss of someone close to them dying....At what happens. They are sad...for a few paragraphs. It gets more or less forgotten for a few pages or a chapter and then when it's time for the sad part, they suddenly remember "Aw, this person died. I am so sad."

This is someone you've known for ages and throughout the course of the book...you go from mourning that person, to making immature jokes, to reminiscing about the person to picking fights because you're jealous your crush is talking to someone and YOU FINALLY decide it's time to mourn again.

The sad part is, they still never completely buried or mourned the person. it was just a waste.
And this happened quite a bit. A character could feel one way for a few paragraphs and then suddenly have a mood change only to come back to that same mood a few pages later.

No consistency....

The way the characters spoke sounded like people reading at a dress rehersal as if they were learning their lines.

3. Overall
The second half was DEFINITELY miles better than the first half of the book...It isn't a bad book per se...it was a good read because the plot was interesting, Nolan is someone i instantly liked and i loved his scenes.

In fact Nolan alone scores this book 2.5 Stars...I'm giving it a full 3 stars because the Premise is interesting and plot is good...If you can sort of tolerate the choppy writing, the book is actually a good read for the summer.

If nothing else, read it just to see how awesome Nolan is

An Action-Packed Read 27. Oktober 2012
Von Jamie Deacon - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
At seventeen, Caleo has never had what might be termed a normal life. Orphaned as a baby, he has been brought up by his eccentric grandmother at The Purple Rose bed and breakfast. He doesn't fit in at school, bullied equally for his unusual pale skin and white hair as for being gay. However, when a stranger turns up to inform Caleo that he is part of a supernatural race called leeches, magical beings who steal the energy from those around them in order to fuel their gifts, things get a whole lot more complicated.

Not only is Caleo a leech, he's the most powerful of all leeches, and holds their fate in his hands. Moreover, he finds himself plunged into the midst of what is effectively a civil war, with rival factions battling for rule. Those on both sides are desperate to turn Caleo's ability to their advantage, and will go to any lengths to gain control over him. With cities and towns flattened by rebel bombs, and just as many people wanting to kill as make use of him, Caleo must decide where his loyalties lie whilst fighting to stay alive.

At least he has his family to help him through, Jack most of all. Raised as his foster brother, Jack is the closest Caleo has to a friend. Caleo's love for him is obvious, even if he scarcely allows himself to acknowledge it. Well, he has long since accepted there can be no future for them. Jack is popular, athletic and incredibly handsome, while Caleo is a freak, a social outcast. He has no idea just how much Jack really cares about him, but will Jack have the courage to confess his feelings before it's too late and circumstances tear them apart?

This may be a work of fantasy, but there's a gritty realism about it that appealed to me. Good people die, and those who are left must learn how to survive in a world that has become hostile overnight. I also found the concept of leeches, these creatures that drain the energy from humans merely to increase their strength, a fascinating one. Though there are undoubtedly some editing issues, this in no way spoilt my enjoyment in the story.

If you're a fan of young adult fantasy, prefer novels with plenty of adventure, and are interested in how individuals cope when civilization as they know it collapses around them, you may want to give this book a go.

A great YA novel 24. Februar 2014
Von Neil in Morgan Hill - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
A 5-star rating for James Crawford's Caleo. This is an action packed story that keeps you in suspense. It does continue into the next book, Jack. Though I do not care for violent content, I gave the story a high rating as the author has written a YA novel that will be of interest to the target audience.

I recommend this story to those who like action stories with a science fiction theme. The story does contain violent content. Sensual content is mild and appropriate for teenage readers.

Personally, I like science fiction but I do not care for violent content. That is my preference and not the fault of the story. I mostly enjoyed the character development and the bonding that takes place between Caleo and his adopted brother and sister.
