Fine Cooking's cakes & cupcakes recipes is a delicious and beautiful book full of achievable recipes by the home cook. The ingredients are listed in metric or American. Since the book doesn't have an introduction I would go with metric. I miss being told when measuring flour by the cup if I could scoop and smooth, or spoon in, and it will make a difference in the outcome of baked goods especially. The lack of introduction is the only negative I really have to say about this book and if I weigh the ingredients there are no issues.

The recipes are arranged by type:
Snack cakes
Layer cakes and cupcakes
cool and creamy cakes
fruit cakes
show stoppers

There is a more complete index in the back that is well arranged for finding specific types of cakes.

Recipes like the bourbon glazed brown sugar pecan cake are easy to make but the tasty results are wonderful. The carrot cake is good, I am not a fan of pineapple in my carrot cake and this one is really good and no pineapple.

There are classic recipes, carrot cake, lemon layer cake, classic crumb cake etc, but then there are interesting and delicious recipes that are a bit outside the regular cake, like the steamed coriander ginger-bread cake with eggnog creme anglaise.

The pictures are lush and inviting, and serve to show what the finish product should look like.

Recipes include make ahead tips, some include techniques for success, for example, how to marble. These tips and techniques are scattered throughout the book and will help make one a more knowledgeable baker in general.

Some recipes might look intimidating to a newer baker, with several steps like cake, filling, frosting, but the layout and explanations are so clear it's easy to follow the steps for success.

I received this book from netgalley in exchange for review, but will be purchasing it for my home library. It's excellent.

This sweets cookbook, created by the people of Fine Cooking, has beautiful pictures, notes, delicious sounding recipes and, best of all, some really great how-to tips that include pictures. And they are all so simple that even someone who is new to baking could be able to figure them out.

Taunton Press publishes the best looking cookbooks out there and this one is no exception. The photographs are so beautiful they can make a cake junkie like me weep. It has a collection of 100 best cake and cupcake recipes from Fine Cooking and there is something for everyone. Take for example the snacking cakes. We don’t usually think of these until it’s 3 PM and your tummy says, hey – it’s been a while since lunch. How about a Swiss Roll? But why eat that when you can make Espresso Gingerbread Cake, Coffee Cocoa Snack Cake Extra Dark or Blueberry Lemon Cornmeal Cake and still have some for days after? There are cupcakes like Layer Party Cupcakes and Caramel Cupcakes with Butterscotch Frosting. Some unusual cakes are Cinnamon Ganache Layer Cake, Brown Butter Pumpkin Cake, Chocolate Beet Layer Cake and Sweet Potato Cupcakes with Maple Cream Cheese Frosting. Plus a Southern Devil’s Food Cake, which reminds me of my dad – not because he’s Southern (or the devil!) but he always bought this cake at our favorite bakery. For the warmer months, enjoy some cool and creamy cakes like Frozen Lemon Cream Cakes with Toasted Meringue and Caramel Sauce and Flourless Chocolate and Vanilla Marble Cake. If your taste buds are craving something richer, there’s Butter Rum Pudding Cakes and Classic Vanilla Tres Leches Cake. I could go on and on and before I forget there are some show-stopper cakes like Chocolate Confetti Chiffon Cake with Almond Crunch and Coconut Cream Meringue Cake that are sure to impress. If that’s not enough reason for you, how about knowing that the recipes in this book are from award-winning chefs, food writers, authors and recipe developers.

With contributions from some of the best bakers, there is something for everyone's taste represented in Fine Cooking Cakes & Cupcakes: 100 Best Ever Recipes, a collection of cakes, cupcakes, sweet biscuit baked goodies and more. If you like chocolate, there's something for you. Want pumpkin, banana, berry, carrot or pineapple, you're in luck. Say you have an abundance of beets and want to bake a chocolate beet cake, this is your resource. Although there's not an abundance of techniques represented, if you have a foundation or willingness to measure properly and follow a recipe, you can't go wrong with this one.

I find that collections like this offer a variety which is often lacking in cookbooks written by a single individual. With multiple perspectives and approaches, it's likely that you'll discover a culinary professional who you'll want to investigate further. Using this resource in the Kindle format allows you to search for an ingredient or contributor which I find beneficial. Since I love Bundt cake baking, I was treated with many options resulting from a single word search.

Beware when you open this book!! It has so many great possibilities!!

I could not believe the choices. The decadence of the cakes and frostings. Oh my goodness I was salivating while reading this book!

I saw multiple options for pound cakes, short cakes, multi-layer cakes, cupcakes, upside down cakes, and so much more! This makes me want to go bake right away. The beauty of this recipe book is probably the simplicity of ingredients. Takes simple chocolate and makes it decadent!

There is even a section for showstoppers for when you are ready to impress! The ideas in here are out of this world!!

Even better, then back of the book has the converter and index. I will be keeping this on my shelf for many years to come.
