Cai Guo-Qiang was born in China in 1957 but left his native country in 1986 and moved to Japan, where he studied and produce his first works. In 1995, he moved to New York, he now lives. In all the places where he has been he takes native materials, rooted in their culture, and includes them art. That is why he began working with gunpowder explosions 1984, as an exploration of the history of China and its connection with gunpowder. He makes this material the main element art, not seeking to associate it with the idea of destruction violence but rather with its original function, which was communication.
