Quality booklet, highly recommended 30. November 2011

Don't let the slight size of this book deceive you - this is a quality publication prepared under the auspices of the Welsh National Museums. It has color photos, aerial photos, maps and drawings on practically every page, along with a well written text. It discusses not merely the history of the fortress and the legion that occupied it, but also the excavation of the ruins and the various restoration efforts. It has color photos of many of the finds now on display in the two associated museums (both of which are located within about five minutes walk from the fortress ruins). I have a graduate degree in Roman history from The University of Chicago and I have actually visited the Caerleon Roman fortress, and I can safely say this booklet will be more than enough of a guide for the average visitor. It is in enough depth to be useful for the serious student, while at the same time keeping the materials accessible and understandable for the casual tourist. (A rare accomplishment!) Before I visited Caerleon, I started reseaching and collecting materials on the fortress with the thought that after my visit I would prepare and publish a short study of the Caerleon fortress suitable for tourists and visitors at the site - something suitable for the museum shops. After buying this book and visiting the site, I dropped that plan because I could see how much time and expense it would take to top this little book. In deed, after passing the book around to friends back here at The University of Texas, we were agreed that significant government grants must have been involved in funding the production of this book. Highly recommended.
I ordered this book for personal reasons, family history background, simple but easy to understand, wished it had more informatio 7. April 2014

My mother was from Caerleon in wales and I have visited there along time ago in the late 40's and 1950's.
, as a child, visiting relatives. My great grandfathers home and back yard garden, where an uncle lived in most of his entire life,as well as my grandfather and his siblings, was in later years excavated and was part of the roman fortress. The drawings and explanations where easy to understand, I was hoping there would be more information on the families whose property bordered the fortress and exact location of those explorations. overall I enjoyed the book and wished it was longer.
