Kurzbeschreibung

Michael Potter wasn’t born bad. If he lacked faith, it was because there was no one to teach it to him. As the child inexorably grew into a monster, an unsuspecting world became his playground.

In the near future in Flagstaff, Arizona, a peaceful Sunday afternoon for the Franklins is interrupted by a phone call. Jerry has to go to work to fix a problem with a cargo rocket, scheduled for launch that evening. Jerry’s wife Sheryl complains to no avail, while his son Dustin is disappointed to lose dad for the day.

At a rundown diner on the Arizona highway, a lonely waitress entices a handsome stranger, Michael Potter, to a nearby spot in the desert: a rarely used missile launch area. She doesn’t suspect that Potter is a dangerous sociopath.

At the launch site, Jerry solves the technical problem affecting the countdown. In the dark, he doesn’t see the stranger sneaking up behind him. Potter attacks, they fight and the unconscious Jerry is locked in the cargo rocket as it is launched into space.

Potter steals Jerry’s jeep and finds a picture of Sheryl in the glove box. She reminds him of his first love, and Potter decides he must find and possess Sheryl at any cost.

Jerry, assumed dead by his family and coworkers, wakes up in the cargo rocket and wonders if he can survive. Meanwhile, Sheryl must help her son Dustin accept the death of his father. Battling her own fears and doubts, she needs to fill both a mother and father role for him.

Potter moves nearer to Sheryl, who he now refers to as his “Angel.” Taking a job at a gas station, through a combination of earnings and stealing, he saves up the money he will need for his twisted plan to court her. It’s not long until Sheryl is at the supermarket where she meets Michael Potter. He has been planning this encounter a long time as part of an elaborate plot to possess her.

After weeks of stalking Sheryl, Potter realizes that her son is going to interfere with his attempts to possess her, and decides he must kill the boy. Examining the contents of the latest trash bag taken from Sheryl’s yard, Potter finds a hand written message: “Vacation, Grand Canyon Nov 1 – Nov 9.”

Potter imagines the possibilities. A little kid, if he wasn’t careful, could fall off a cliff. If that happened, he, Potter, would be there to provide loving support and physical relief to the grieving mother.

CHASM is a psychological thriller that would appeal to fans of Michael Crichton or Arthur C. Clarke. A little sci-fi, a lot of character and story, wrapped up in a fast-moving narrative that draws you in.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

David Felder was born and raised in New Jersey. CHASM is his first novel. He picked up his father's 8mm movie camera in 1970 at the age of 12 and began writing and making his own movies. The interests in film making and story writing grew through his teenage years and early adulthood. A graduate of Rutgers University, David started working in the broadcast news field, while continuing his writing. After a few years, he was hired to build a training video department for a large computer company. As head of the Video Production department at TRW, a multinational conglomerate, David wrote and/or produced almost 180 training videos with a staff of two technicians over the next ten years. The turning point in his corporate career came in 1987, when David was promoted out of the Video Production Department into a staff management position. Although he was still responsible for video production, a large number of additional management duties began to occupy his time and he felt himself growing further and further away from the creative work he enjoyed. In 1991, David left TRW and started his own company, Ryan Video Productions, where he could focus on writing and producing programs. When he's not writing or working, David enjoys traveling, reading and spending time in the company of the important people in his life. David is an avid scuba diver and can often be found in the Atlantic Ocean, somewhere off the coast of New Jersey, exploring shipwrecks, appreciating the beauty of the seas, or catching lobsters.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Couldn't stop reading - Loved it! 10. September 2012
Von PDX Author - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
It isn't very often when a début novel by an independent author comes along to grab the attention of discriminating readers. That is exactly what David Felder's recently released novel, Chasm does. Steven King fans will love this page-turner full of suspense that grabs the reader from the very beginning.

This author knows his stuff. From his well-chosen place descriptions to his understanding of orbital mechanics and the science of manned space travel, every detail in this story comes alive because it is so believable. The characters are well developed and the dialogue meshes well with the plot. This psychological-techno thriller is a masterpiece of contemporary fiction that will appeal to a broad range of adult readers.

The story opens with the introduction of Michael Potter, who is soon discovered to be a serial killer. At first Potter seems like the cliché of the bad guy who grew up to become a master at planning each step of his crimes so he doesn't get caught. What he didn't plan on is the ingenuity of the protagonist, Dr. Jerry Franklin who is in fact a rocket engineer.

When Jerry wakes up after a brutal encounter with Potter, he discovers he's been locked aboard the supply rocket that will be in lunar orbit until the supplies are needed. Not only is Jerry an intelligent engineer with the ability to solve nearly any problem, he's got survival instincts to boot.

Every chapter is filled with detail and every detail builds up to a suspenseful and thrilling finale. There are a number of clever links between the characters in this story, including Franklin's wife and son, who Potter takes a special interest in. The story culminates in an exciting and surprising conclusion. I hope David Felder has another hat trick for us because Chasm was such a great read!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Exceptional! 6. September 2012

I was asked to review this book and it was sent to me for free, but the one thing I tell the authors that ask me to review their books is that I am brutally honest. I don't know David personally so you can rest assured if his book sucked I would tell you but I was so suprised that this is his first book, I was captured instantly and stayed that way until the end, character development was great and the plot was interesting and something new. I would not have felt bad about paying for this book and it is well worth the asking price. Great job Mr. Felder, hurry up and write another!

3.0 von 5 Sternen The Chasm Will Have Readers on Edge 23. November 2012
Von Kate Campbell - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
An intricately woven tale, Chasm melds several genres into a single narrative that's part psychological thriller, part space adventure and part family saga, culminating on the edge of America's great chasm, the Grand Canyon. The story moves through the narrative in bursts or crots, fragmentary chapters that drive the story forward in suspenseful abruptness to create a chilling whole. This technique is used effectively and the novel's shaping makes it easy to read while traveling, the perfect companion for commuting or fitting reading time into busy schedules, and allowing the suspense to be layered on.

The story takes off when rocket scientist Jerry Franklin finds himself hurtling into space toward the moon in a supply ship, wearing only T-shirt and jeans. His ingenious nature allows him to survive. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Michael Potter, infantilized psychopath, begins stalking Franklin's wife, Sheryl, and planning the demise of the couple's young son, Dustin. But, even while separated by the chasm of sky and earth, family ties hold in the face of evil.

Overall, Chasm offers quick-paced, suspenseful storytelling. Told in short bursts, this tale is sure to entertain. For readers who enjoy the exploration of large questions about the human condition in a rapidly changing and dangerous world, Chasm provides a lot of bang for the buck - a three-fer narrative with 78 chapters and an epilogue, but not a lot of soulful soul-searching. Chasm, however, is an intriguing debut novel. Look for future work by David Felder, who is a gifted storyteller.
