4.0 von 5 Sternen Good book but topics missing 13. April 2013
Von Gerard A. Palmeri - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
I successfully completed the CCNA Security exam today and I thought I'd review this book while it was fresh in my mind.

In general, my one-line review would be that the book is really good for the topics it covers BUT Cisco has added some topics since this book has been published (for example, PVLANs) so you need to visit either the Cisco Learning Network website page OR the Cisco Press site to get the latest syllabus. Another caveat is that I think one should have the CCNA material fresh in one's mind while reading this book. The authors do not review the material that one should have covered in the CCNA. If this isn't fresh in your mind, you may have gaps in understanding.

To conclude on a positive note, I really enjoy Keith's writing style and enthusiasm for teaching, training and computer networking and, in general, I think he (and his co-author) did a really good job covering a LOT of material in a well-organized and well-written way. It was good enough for me to pass the exam but others may need to supplement.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Study with Confidence !! 19. August 2012

The methodical layout of Cisco the books are just one of the features that makes studying for their exams a pleasure. The book starts with a table layout of the topics covered in the exam and the parts of the book where they can be found. Right from the beginning you know Chapters 4 through 16 contain the most content covered on the exam. The questions at the beginning of the chapters and at the end makes sure you are honing in on the information presented for study. The book has many features to assist you and keep you on track for success. The clarity with which the book explains Security and the way it seems you are just engaged in general conversation makes for an unintimidating learning experience even for a security novice.

It starts off like most books with the basic security concepts, risk analysis and the lifecycle of a secure network, and security policies and the importance of these fundamental aspects in the first four chapters. Then, it on to the core of the exam, starting out with protecting the network infrastructure fundamentals. The information detailing the Cisco Configuration Professional is helpful. It has a few diagrams of the application and a step-by-step guide to demonstrate the creation of the community, templates, user profile and audit features. At the end of each chapter there is a Command Reference to Check Your Memory section. This details the most important commands covered in each chapter. You are able to review what was used along with a description of each command. On the CD, there is "Memory Tables" section that tests your memory. Its an exercise for you to fill out the tables from memory. Cisco Press does a very good job in allowing you to keep a steady pace with what is being discussed and offers many ways on how to retain the information. It's a very thorough learning process.

IPv6 coverage is timely considering the world launch of it took place in June of 2012. It covers the threats that now take place in both IPv4 and IPv6, as well as the new potential risks with IPv6. The third part of the book that is covered heavily in the exam is the threat control strategies, firewalls and ACLs. Again, more diagrams of the Cisco Configuration Professional component to walk you through the steps to apply access lists and view logs. VPN technology, public key infrastructure and fundamentals of IP security are featured as well. Cisco has addressed the security issues in this brand new issue of their book in detail. The practice exams are helpful as well as the information located on their site and CD. Cisco doesn't disappoint.

5.0 von 5 Sternen MASTER THE CCNA SECURITY EXAM!! 12. August 2012

Are you preparing for the 640-554 Implementing Cisco IOS Network Security exam? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Keith Barker and Scott Morris, have done an outstanding job of writing book that improves your awareness and knowledge of network security.

Barker and Morris, begin by covering the need for the building blocks of network and information security, threats to our networks today, and the fundamental principles of secure network design. Then, the authors review risk analysis, management and security policies. The authors also cover the securing of borderless networks, controlling and containing data loss. They continue by covering the securing of the network using the network foundation protection approach, the management plane, the control plane, and the data plane. Next, the authors review the Cisco Configuration Professional features and the GUI, setting up new devices, CCP building blocks, and CCP audit features. Then, they describe management traffic and how to make it more secure and the implementation of security measures to protect the management plane. The authors also describe the role of Cisco Secure ACS and the two primary protocols used with it, RADIUS and TACACS. They continue by reviewing VLANs and trunking fundamentals, spanning-tree fundamentals, and common Layer 2 threats and how to mitigate them. Next, the authors cover the Ipv6. Then, they discuss the design considerations for threat mitigation and containment; and, the hardware, software, and services used to implement a secure network. The authors also cover the benefits and fundamentals for access control lists, implementing Ipv4 ACLs a packet filters, and implementing Ipv6 ACLs as packet filters. They continue by reviewing the firewall concepts and the technologies used by them, the function of Network Address Translations, including its building blocks, and the guidelines and considerations for creating and deploying firewalls. Next, the authors discuss the operational and functional components of the IOS Zone-Based Firewall and how to configure and verify the IOS Zone-Based Firewall. Then, they cover the Adaptive Security Appliance family and features, ASA firewall fundamentals, and configuring the ASA. The authors also compare intrusion prevention systems to intrusion detection systems and cover how to identify malicious traffic on the network, manage signatures, and monitor and manage alarms and alerts. Next, they cover the features included in the IOS-based IPS and the installing of the IPS feature; working with signatures in IOS-based IPS; and, managing and monitoring IPS alarms. The authors continue by covering what VPNs are, why they are used and the basic ingredients of cryptography. Then, they cover the concepts, components, and operations of the public key infrastructure and include an example of putting the pieces of PKI to work. The authors also cover the concepts, components, and operations of IPsec and how to configure and verify IPsec. Next, they cover the planning and preparation that is needed to implement an IPsec site-to-site VPN, implementing and verifying the IPsec site-to-site VPN. The authors continue by covering the functions and use of SSL for VPNs, configuring SSL clientless VPN on the ASA, and configuring the full SSL AnyConnect VPN on the ASA. Finally, they identify the tools that are needed for the final exam preparation to help you develop an effective study plan.

The goal of this most excellent book is to help you increase your skill level related to the implementation of network security. Perhaps more importantly, this great book can be used in preparing for the CCNA Security certification exam.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Clear material for an easy test 14. Februar 2013

It may take you a while to get through this book, but it's one of the better Associate level books I've read from Cisco Press. If you've already taken your Security+ or something like it, then you'll have the basic, general knowledge of security you need to provide a good foundation for this. Since it's Cisco Press, it of course targets the specifics of security on cisco devices. If you're in a junior admin role on a live network, you'll find this a useful reference for your AAA needs, and it's got some really great coverage of IPv6. The CCNA Security test requires the CCNA as a prerequisite, and as such if you have no cisco background, this will be a really steep learning curve for you.
Even if you're not going to go for CCNA Security, this would be a helpful reference in wrapping your mind around CCNA level switching topics; it is of course possible to just know the answer and pass the test, but some of the material on the CCNA only really makes sense if you see it in a broader context. Specifically, STP and access lists are covered from a different angle than the CCNA study guides.
For eighteen bucks, the electronic version of this book is a great buy for several different reasons.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A good job and a excellent reference for the exam. 12. August 2012
Von Technical Consultant - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
One thing I have come to expect over the years from Cisco Press and their authors is a high quality exam certification material. Also there is an expectation that the information is not only technically accurate but also up to date. This book is all that and more, as it is very well organized and breaks down the exam chapter by chapter, quiz by quiz, exercise by exercise. The authors leave no stone unturned with amazing technical detail throughout the text.

Each chapter begins with a small assessment quiz to let you know what you can expect to cover within that chapter. There is a practice exams included with the CD as well as videos. I think for the money you are paying there should be more practice tests and certainly more video. I also think a practice sim type of application should be included for those who need more hands on, as it would help with the coverage of the Cisco specific hardware discussed throughout the book.

I was impressed with the IPv6 breakdown information, the abundant use of tables to point out key information, as well as the exam preparation breakdown and you can really tell these guys know there stuff. I found that there is information that can be used for the Security+ exam and I am sure that it could be used for several others. Overall this book is an excellent study tool; it is also a great reference tool that's makes a fine addition to any technical library.
