Pressestimmen

"Mercedes Lackey's work is as sharp--and scary--as the suddenly revealed fang of a vampire. She'll keep you up long past your bedtime."--Stephen King
"There are days that I think that I would much rather be Diana Tregarde than anyone else...."--"OtherRealms"

Kurzbeschreibung

Dallas Police Detective Mark Valdez isn't just any cop, he's a psychic who knows that the cattle mutilations and torture murders he's been investigating are somehow tied together. He also knows that his meager psychic abilities aren't enough to identify the killers, much less stop them.
Luckily, Mark has an ace up his sleeve: an attractive young romance novelist who happens to be a practicing witch. And not just any witch, either-Diana Tregarde is a Guardian, charged with protecting the Earth and all its creatures.
Using modern science and ancient magics, Diana and Mark discover that they are tailing no ordinary serial killer but the awakened avatar of an Aztec god. Tezcatlipoca and his four beautiful handmaidens are preparing for a great sacrifice that will transform North America into a new Aztec realm.
Diana isn't sure her powers are strong enough to take on those of a risen Aztec god, but she has no choice. As a Guardian, she is sworn to protect mankind, even at the cost of her own life. Luckily, she does not stand alone. Mark Valdez is more than just a cop. And Tezcatlipoca is not the only Aztec god walking in the world.

Burning Water was my introduction to Mercedes Lackey - I regret that no more books will be written in this series(according to some sources). I found the heroine and her cohorts quite entertaining and engrossing - I definitely appreciate characters that possess a sense of humor and humanity. If you enjoy reading fantasy that doesn't take itself TOO seriously (spare me), and don't particularly care for the knights-in-armor scenario, try this mystery and the other two in the series.

Mercedes Lackey is one of my favourite writers but with this book she created her worst! I love all her books from the Valdemar series. Certainly, this is a totally different kind of book. I simply couldn't understand, why the heroine is persecuted by a nasty german reporter. In the end, the reporter is dead and one get's the impression, well, never mind, it's better like that. Perhaps I see this a little bit out of proportion, because I'm german, but I simply couldn't understand, why the german reporter (investigating for the media in Germany) is the only one who's after the story and there's no american reporter at all in sight. Apart from that I found the whole plot ridiculous.

Overactive imagination, beware! While "Burning Water" _was_ predictable, it's easy to forget what's going to happen if you can lose yourself in the book. Be careful, though ... you start seeing things in the shadows after a while.
It's not as terrifying as a horror novel, I suppose, but there's something about the book that is even more chilling than carefully calculated horror, somehow ....
On the whole, the Tregarde books are good -- I especially like Lackey's take on witchcraft (it seems to be a good deal more open-minded than most authors) -- but I'd really like to see more of them. You know what they say about Lackey and trilogies, though, and she _has_ done three Tregardes ....

The Diana Tregarde Investigations are awesome!!!
Diana Tregarde seems to be a similar type of heroine to Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake. Diana is a petite witch with a lot of power. Lesen Sie weiter...
