Kurzbeschreibung

Payback is paradise in this start to a trilogy from New York Times bestselling author Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian.

Postcard-perfect Jar Island is home to charming tourist shops, pristine beaches, amazing oceanfront homes—and three girls secretly plotting revenge.

KAT is sick and tired of being bullied by her former best friend.

LILLIA has always looked out for her little sister, so when she discovers that one of her guy friends has been secretly hooking up with her, she’s going to put a stop to it.

MARY is perpetually haunted by a traumatic event from years past, and the boy who’s responsible has yet to get what’s coming to him.

None of the girls can act on their revenge fantasies alone without being suspected. But together…anything is possible.

With an unlikely alliance in place, there will be no more “I wish I’d said…” or “If I could go back and do things differently...” These girls will show Jar Island that revenge is a dish best enjoyed together.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Rache ist süß.. oder? 22. Februar 2013
Von Gwyneth (ALzB) VINE™-PRODUKTTESTER
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf

Denn was genau ist diesen drei Mädchen überhaupt so Schlimmes passiert?

4.0 von 5 Sternen Problematic, but the positives outweight the negatives 18. September 2012
Von Linda - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Let's start with the bad: there are some glaring issues in the book, and a major one in particular. Lillia's back story is pretty well spoiled in the synopsis, and yet the most serious of crimes committed is the one that gets completely glossed over. The flashback takes only a few pages to retell, and it's implied that at the advice of her friend, she had simply decided to "get over it," and instead her target for revenge is the guy who may be hooking up with her little sister. It's plausible how the two things could equate themselves in Lilia's mind and she's reacting disproportionally due to her experience, but this is never articulated by the authors. Since they decided to use sexual assault as a plot point, I hope in the sequels the authors will give Lillia's story the gravitas it deserves.

For slightly more shallow reasons, I also did not particularly care for the romantic entanglements that Lillia finds herself in, especially since in this particular love triangle, I already have my preference, and it's far from certain at this point who will end up with whom by the end of the trilogy (sigh, YA reader problems). And as for the rest of the trilogy, its direction becomes clear when supernatural elements begin intersecting with the girls' revenge plots, in a rather disjointed fashion. Because it was introduced late, it did make for a rather unexpected and abrupt ending, intended no doubt to keep readers grasping for the sequel, but I'm not sure if the authors fully wrapped up the story they originally set out to tell. Rather, they introduced a whole new plot.

This was a problematic read that I think ultimately overcomes its downsides with its positives. The three protagonists, Kat, Mary and Lillia have distinct voices and each of their stories were compelling for different reasons and the way the details are sprinkled throughout and slowly revealed through flashbacks was a nice way of keeping the reader engaged. Mary's story was particularly heartbreaking. The fragile and reluctant friendship that forms between the three completely different girls was also a nice development, and watching them gleefully plan their revenge against the peers who wronged them was a lot of fun. I'm of the camp that believes the supernatural element wasn't really necessary, but I am intrigued about where it goes next.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Oooh BURN 6. November 2012
Von Nikki Wang - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
The professional (ish) reaction: Burn for Burn is most definitely in my Top 5 books (of 2012)! It's a sinister cotemporary that touches on a few paranormal aspects, making it an exciting new read! Dramatic, devious, and stunning, Burn for Burn met, and exceeded, all expectations!

MARY: Mary really does act like the kind of girl she's portraying, shy and meek, but she's got some anger and betrayal hidden in her and I loved that even though she was quiet, she had an undeniable spark in her that just makes you love her! Ever since she was betrayed by the one guy she trusted, Reeve, she's been a bit on the don't-notice-me side, but that's about to change.
Something strange is happening too. Whenever she gets emotional, freaky things start to happen--a sudden wind storm, lights exploding. What, exactly, is happening to her? It's just one of the questions raised and left unanswered. Hopefully we'll find out why in book 2!
KAT: Kat has beef with Rennie, the Queen Bee of the school and also her ex-best friend. But now because of that same person, Kat is left out all because she got "boring" and got replaced by Lillia, out other narrator. Kat is incredibly rebellious and fiery and she was such an interesting character! She's the "devious" one and came up with most of the revenge plans and man! They were evil! But the one thing about Kat was that she took so much glee from the hurt of others and that...kind of unnerved me. But otherwise, she was an amazing character!
LILLIA: Lillia was definitely my favorite character and no, not because she was Chinese. But I'm glad there was diversity! But a guy took advantage of Lillia and when she finds out that her sister may have...done it with her friend, she's more than pissed. I loved how Lillia was so protective of her sister and how kind she was. I definitely think Lillia was the stronger character. In this revenge plan, she's hurt 3 of her friends who've been with her since...almost forever. But she didn't break and I loved her spunk!

I loved the way Han and Vivian wrote it. Written in all three POV's, we still get a feel for all the narrators, each of them with their own separate personalities. The best thing is, none of them got blurred together. Even without them telling you, it would be extremely simple to figure out who was who! The voice was amazing and I think Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian are literally the perfect authors to write this story! I can't think of anyone else writing it as awesomesaucely. Yes, that is a word.

The plot? Yes, it was insanely dramatic (and I doubt that anyone would actually do it) but that's one of the best things about Burn for Burn. The drama and the cleverness! And the ending just about killed me. He..he...remembers her! ACK. Anyways, the supernatural element is a giant part of the ending, in the beginning not so much. I love how the plot unfolded and progressed with each act of revenge. And is it wrong to feel a tad gleeful when Rennie got her turn for revenge? On the other hand, the attacks on Alex and Reeve seemed a bit more malicious than the ones on Rennie...but anyways, I can't wait to see what they have in store in book 2!

The unprofessional reaction: Holy craptastic! This is literally one of the best books I have ever read. And I can't wait to get book 2! I'm seriously dying here and I can't believe that Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian could be so mean to make us wait! Y'all have got to read this AH-MAE-ZING book! People should line up to read this book and I bet that they will!

QUOTE
"No one can ever know what we're up to. What we do together lives and dies with us. And if we're really going to do this, no one can bail halfway through. If you're in, you need to be in until the very end. Until we all get what we want. If not, well... consider yourself fair game. It'll be open season and we'll have hell of a lot ammo to use against you. If you can't swear on that, we might as well just pretend like tonight never happened."

Kat. I liked her the best in the very beginning. She was sassy, sarcastic, hurt, different and the most interesting out of all of them. However, when the story progressed, she became too agressive and vengeful for my taste. I still liked her, but she wasn't at the top of my list anymore. Kat has been wronged by Rennie - her former best friend, she has lost her Mom and gone through a lot. She's tired of Rennie playing games and doesn't want to sit by and wait for karma to step it up and get back on Rennie for being such an ignorant bitch. Kat wants to do it herself.

Lillia. I found her to be a bit of a snob. She's a popular, gorgeus cheerleader from a wealthy family. She's got everything. Until something bad happens to her. She told no, but that didn't stop things from happening. She tries to forget. To move on. To act normal. Things don't go exactly as she hopes, because someone from her circle of friends has set his eyes on her little sister Nadia and Lillia decides to protect her at every cost. What happened to her cannot ever happen to her sister. Throughout the book she grew on me the most since she had the most to lose and I felt like her conscience made this story seem more real.

Mary. She's the quiet one. The new girl. Or is she? She's a beautiful girl who wasn't so pretty back in the day. Someone she thought she knew, someone she trusted hurt her in the most crucial way and that's the reason she has spent four years away from this place. But now she's back. And she wants that person to feel at least a little amount of that pain that broke her. Will she get her revenge?

The plot. Interesting and intriguing. I liked the dynamic between the girls and that it was written from three points of views, therefore, we got glimpses of all of the three girls' thoughts on both - the past and the present. I found their stories captivating and full of so much hurt, despair, emotion that it was hard to imagine them not doing anything vengeful, although, even considering how much they were hurt, I still think that revenge should never be the way to go.

What suprised me were some of the fantasy elements which definitely came out of the blue. I thought it was just contemporary YA fiction, but there turned out to be a twist - something witchy is going on with one of the girls. I'm so looking forward to exploring that in the next two books. I was so not expecting that, but it was pretty darn cool.

One thing I know for sure is that Rennie is the queen of the kingdom of bitches. She's so two-faced and full of herself. She thinks she's the ultimate goddess and everyone actually follows her every move, sentence, thought. I think she's just an inscure clown, though. She's the character you love to hate. Reeve - he did some pretty terrible things, but on some level, I felt sorry for him. I think deep down he wishes he hadn't done what he did on that notorious night. Well, one can never be sure though, but I still think there's some good in him and I really hope I'm right. I feel bad for liking him. Is that weird? After knowing everything he has done? I don't know.. I liked Alex. I really did, but he confused me with his actions. I wonder how his story will end and whom he'll end up with.

The ending was so, so unexpected! I'm definitely going to read the sequel and I thought this was a very decent start to the series. It was headspinning, funny, exciting, consuming, mysterious, a little bit romantic, emotional and sometimes, yes, a bit scary. It's hard to think that there are people out there who've been wronged the same way and I can only wish that karma will do it's job, not the ones who've been hurt by the bullies. I'd prefer to read about this kind of stuff in a fictional world, not from newspapers or any other media channel for that matter.
