Jim Schutze combines natural details about the sawgrass marshes and roaring alligators of the area south of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with keen observations about the fantasy lives of teenagers hooked on surfing, steroids, and instant gratification, to paint a harrowing picture of seven suburban kids who slide all too easily into moral depravity. At the heart of his tale is a kind of love triangle: the "bully," his best friend Marty, and Marty's girlfriend, who fiercely desires to rescue Marty from a strangely destructive friendship with strong homosexual undertones. Schutze's account of the aftermath of the murder includes interesting details on how the police skillfully lured confessions from the kids involved. I found the writing to have a few inconsistencies, and I wished the author had provided more background about how he reconstructed the dialogue, but those are small reservations about an excellent book overall.

This mesmerizing account examines a recent murder in Florida involving seven middle-class Fort Lauderdale teens who murdered their friend. Convinced by his headstrong, pregnant girlfriend that sadistic bully Bobby Kent was the source of all his problems, high-school dropout Marty Puccio agreed to murder his longtime buddy. Marty and his girlfriend enlisted help from five friends who went along with the scheme. With promises of sex and drugs, Bobby was lured to a remote area on the edge of the Everglades, where he begged for his life as his friends brutally beat and stabbed him. Schutze reconstructs the crime in stunning detail and also offers an overview of the seamy escapades in which the teens engaged before the crime. Every bit as horrific as the murder itself were the unrepentant responses of the kids and their parents. This was not merely a case of teens running with the wrong crowd; as one exasperated attorney summed it up, "These kids were the wrong crowd." Frightening and sad. Sue-Ellen Beauregard

I've read so many true crime books, that many of them are lost somewhere in my memory. But this one could never dissapear like many others. I've reccommended it to friends and they say the same thing. Any fan of true crime would be crazy to miss this one.

I actually read this about a year ago and have since passed the book along to several friends(the book is so good I've yet to get it back). Bully is a real teen tragedy. The boys involved in the crime had it all, came from good homes, had nice cars, clothes & anything else they could want. The girls had it kind of tough and went looking for trouble, hanging at the mall tends to get boring pretty fast. Marty gets fed up with Bobby Kent's constant teasing and tormenting and decides to get even, recruiting Lisa & the rest of their friends. They thought they had it all figured out, collecting all kinds of weapons to use after they lured him to the beach. The crime itself is very disturbing and makes you realize how sick these kids were. A great, fast read.

Bully, was extremely confusing to me. I found all these teenages with nothing to do but contemplate murder. What a sad commentary for the American youth. What happen to getting a job, or involve oneself in sports, or reading a book. I wonder what was/is the rate of STD's, HIV, and Hepatatis in Broward county or any other American county for that matter. Where are the parents of these children? There is a tremendous lack in the US of parental guidance and if it does exist, its misdirected (one parent households). When my friends and I were growing up in the 60's, we participated in sports,got involved in school activities, and held down part time jobs and as a result became doctors,lawyers, engineers, etc.

I get the sense the book was taken from court transcripts and it seems very fictional. I threw it away after a few pages.

A compelling read

Too many details overlooked
I love to read true crime, however, this story lacked details and explainations. I was disappointed to see that the only picture of the victim was of his face-down battered body!

This book should be called Fiction
The book had to many inconsistency between real-life and what the author thought happened! Made up? This book is borderline fiction. Good story, but part fiction.
