Bug Out Bag preparation – why worry about such things, anyhow?

When I was a young man, I had the honor of being a member of the Boy Scouts. My parents encouraged me to join scouting. I like to think that they wanted me to get some useful skills and meet new people - they like to say that it was a great way to get me out of their hair. Either way, I spent a number of years camping and learning to love and survive the outdoors.

What does this have to do with a Bug Out Bag you ask? Well to be honest, everything. I have spent years building, in my opinion, the ultimate resource for bugging out. The resource that I am talking about is the mindset of preparedness. What I am going to do is to share that mindset with you now; because if you don’t have the mindset, your chances of surviving a disaster are extremely diminished.

Over the next few pages I am going to take you for a little walk down preparation lane. Along the way we are going to discuss what we need to take, why we need to take it and why it is imperative to make these decisions in advance. This book may not save your life, but if you make your own Bug Out Bag and prepare yourself for the challenges you may face, then YOU SHOULD NOT NEED SAVING.

Read on to find out what to bring while bugging out, in order to give yourself some measures of comfort while living in survival mode.

Bug Out Bag Essentials: What Does a Prepper Take When Disaster Hits by Peter Skyler is a very short book covering the following topics: Food, water, shelter, electronics, what type of bag to use?, weight, weapons, filling the bag, bug out scenarios, and summing up. Most of the information provided is readily available for free on the internet and there is no insight provided. Additionally, this book suffers from what I call a fatal flaw when it comes to the topic of weapons. The author states, “What I know now is that a handgun is not really all that useful a tool.” This is pure ignorance. Having been a former law enforcement officer I completely disagree with this statement. Skyler then goes on to say, “Overall, there are probably far better choices in your bag or on your body than a handgun.” Yet, he fails to say what will serve you better than a handgun. History has demonstrated time and time again that weapons, specifically firearms, are the great equalizer for the weak. Those without weapons become victims and statistics. For me, Skyler has poisoned whatever good information that he may have provided in this book with is inaccurate information on handguns. Clearly, the author has not visualized what a disaster, civil unrest, a breakdown of society, or violence looks like otherwise he may reconsider his stance on weapons.

Overall Assessment:

Bug Out Bag Essentials: What Does a Prepper Take When Disaster Hits by Peter Skyler suffers from a myopic viewpoint and a fatal flaw which derails anything positive that the author is attempting to get across with the other information that is provided. Skip this book as you can get better and more relevant information for free on the internet.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Lots of Good Advice, Some Bad 19. November 2013

This book starts out with some very good and practical, if simple, advice for the bug out bag "essentials" like water, food, and shelter. This advice will definitely be helpful for readers that are brand new to prepping. After the basics, there were several recommendations that I absolutely disagreed with. The worst of which was the advice in the Weapons section(2.5 pages on a kindle reader) in which the author states that weapons should be left at home unless you are bugging out because of an invasion "from another nation or another planet". While he made a good case for leaving long arms out of a bug out bag because of the size, his argument concerning a handgun was less than convincing: "What I know now is that a handgun is not really all that useful a tool. The shorter barrel length, make it far less accurate than a rifle, so not very good for hunting. Overall, there are probably far better choices in your bag or on your body than a handgun." Modern handguns are actually quite accurate and many areas have specific handgun hunting seasons. Handguns can be quite useful, lightweight, multi-purpose tools for both hunting and self-defense.

It also seemed somewhat insulting when the author compared people that believe in the potency of handguns to children that believe in the tooth fairy. Not cool!

I won't say that you shouldn't buy this book. There is some good and helpful information, but this definitely wouldn't be my first choice if you are looking for advice concerning weapons. If you don't care about firearms advice and you are a beginner, by all means, buy this book. Even with my disagreements, this book gets 3-stars from me. According to Amazon, that means "It's OK"

If you are looking for a comprehensive guide to the bug out bag essentials, go with Build the Perfect Bug Out Bag: Your 72-Hour Disaster Survival Kit. Yes, it costs three times as much as this book, but it's definitely worth it. If you are looking for bug out bag firearm advice, I have to recommend a book written by yours truly, Ultralight Survival: Prepping a Small and Light Bug Out Bag With Essentials and Gear That Could Save Your Life, with a special section about defensive tools with tips for customizing handguns and ammunition for longer range accuracy and more stopping power.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Good Basic Guide 24. Oktober 2013

This is a good guide for a beginner. The author gives his list of things you would need if you had to leave your house and walk to safety. He keeps it simple and gives reasons for what he recommends. He also makes a point that everyone should have a Bug Out Bag. He even offers inexpensive alternatives for those of us who don't have a lot of money. One minor thing that he didn't mention was having and bringing prescription medicines with you--but perhaps he intended for those to be part of the first aid kit he recommends every member of family to carry. Easy to read and understand information.
3.0 von 5 Sternen A decent book to get you started. 13. Juli 2014

Overall, I think the author did a decent job of describing bug out bags, but I found it light on content in a few chapters. I think he could expand on the concept of where you are bugging out to while discussing reasons you may have to bug out. For arguments sake, I would have put the "why" before the "how".

I also found a few errors that should have been picked up by an editor.

Pictures would help seal the deal on moving this up a few stars. Overall general advice that is pretty common sense to us
