Kurzbeschreibung

10. Februar 2014 Memoirs of a Pro-American
Brotherly Enemies is a story of a young man growing up in the arms of one of the most turbulent regions in the world. From the time Elie Nakouzi was five years old, the environment in his home of Beirut, Lebanon was riddled with tension and death. As a young man, Elie watched his once peaceful community of Furn el Chebbak turn from pleasant and thriving into a warzone, with Christian and Muslim neighbors becoming enemies in a civil war that would span the next 30 years. As a boy, Elie’s main concern was understanding the differences that tore him from his Muslim friends and caused his family and neighbors to fear the worst. He focused on American culture, believing that the free States was the life he desired. He began to refer to himself as a pro-American and sought to be part of the culture he so admired one day. The Syrian occupation of Lebanon brought new terrors, as Beirut became separated into two factions, the west for the Muslims and the east for the Christians. Bearing witness to assassinations, other devastating crimes of war, and abominable displays of inhumanity, Elie found himself becoming immune to the constant barrage of death and hate and angry at the lack of protection from the rest of the world. This anger led to many questions, and once he discovered the question mark, Elie knew his future would always depend on it. As he grew older, his passion of journalism grew due a desire to denounce leaders such as President Hafez al-Assad, Saddam Hussein, and other brutal dictators. Brotherly Enemies begins the tale of Elie and takes the reader through the start of his personal revolution as a radio host, television talk show host, and eventually a serious journalist breaking the barriers of freedom of speech and inflaming the ruling dictatorship. He experiences threats against his life and his family, but he also enjoys the splendors of success, becoming one of the most well-recognized journalists in Lebanon and a voice of the resistance, often rubbing elbows with some of the most powerful people in world, including members of the Saudi royal family. But money, fame, women, alcohol, and a rampant appetite for luxury were always at odds with Elie’s true passion: the liberation of his country. This is the true story of one man’s perspective of war and his mission to bring it down, even if his voice was the only one being heard.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Truly remarkable! 11. Februar 2014

Passionate. This books makes me think and reflect on the good I have in the western hemisphere. I really have no clue how I could manage knowing that any minute I could be taken out; that I am indeed not safe. At times I watch these things on television and I say to myself how would it feel if I was in this situation. Reading this book it felt so alive, so livid, i felt as if i was in the situations.

I see a journey, a story where a boy overcomes struggles, his obstacles and faced all his fears in success. This is what defines a man, the ability to be able to make right conscious decisions to better himself in life regardless of his downfalls, regardless of his mistakes he would still look up being positive in himself knowing that there is a light shining bright at the end of the tunnel.

I am honoured to have been exposed to such a novel for I am looking deep within myself, looking at where I was, where I am now and where I am heading. I now realise that the past, neither the present can depict how your future will be.
I must thank the author Elie Nakouzi for sharing such an experience with the readers.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent book - very eye opening and gripping story 13. Februar 2014

This book took me inside the life and culture of someone born and raised in the Middle East.

It painted a very jarring and often disturbing look at the lives, especially of children, caught in the crossfire of a seemingly never ending war.

The author was very descriptive and honest with his viewpoints.

As an American, I think we see the turbulence of the Middle East in the newspapers and on TV but have no real understanding of what it is like to live in the midst of it 24/7. The author takes us there and it is definitely eye opening.

Excellent book.

I really loved this story. A true story that is so captivating I literally could not put the book down. I was instantly intrigued with Elie. He becomes a well-known journalist in his war ravaged country of Lebanon and he proves you can stand up for what you believe in. His determination and strength really inspired me. I felt like I was on my own personal journey meeting powerful people and trying to end devastating crimes of war. I highly recommend this book and I am looking forward to seeing what comes next from this author!

Brotherly Enemies is a wonderfully written story based on true events. The bravery of Mr. Nakouzi makes him a true patriot. His deep passion for his life and his deep-founded beliefs and desire for peace make him a superb person of character. I have found this book is deeply accurate and will take the serious reader on a wild ride not likely to be forgotten.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Vividly raw, yet truly inspiring tale 4. Mai 2014
Von Darlene Cruz - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Wow, is there a better word? Sorry I didn't realize someone else used the same word, "Wow" but it's true! Captivating memoir. Mr. Nakouzi out did himself. I found myself in a roller coaster of raw emotions going up and down. He managed to project his detailed events so vividly that I actually could see it in my mind like watching it on the television. Excellent book, sometimes I had to take a step back from reading because the story was so intense. His honesty about everything I read in this book was truly awe-inspiring. I don't have to tell you what the book was all about because you can read the reviews of other readers, I just wanted to express how I felt reading this touching yet emotional story. This is a keeper, a book not, "want to read", but one that "you should read right away". I won this book on Goodreads, First Read Giveaway. Thank you, Darlene Cruz.
