ERIN M. EVANS got a degree in Anthropology from Washington University in St. Louis--and promptly stuck it in a box. Nowadays she uses that knowledge of bones, mythology, and social constructions to flesh out fantasy worlds. She is the author of The God Catcher, and she lives in Washington State.

Brimstone Angels 7. November 2011
Von Ben King - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Brimstone Angels is Erin M. Evans' second full length novel and the first of the Neverwinter trilogy. And she's done absolutely fantastic.

The story starts off with twin tiefling girls and their adoptive dragonborn father, with one sister summoning a devil, and the other getting snared in it's trap. The story starts right in the middle of things, and doesn't slow down for the whole book.

The characters (Farideh, Havilar, Lorcan, etc.) All of them were absolutely awesome, realistic, and well-rounded.
The inside look into Malbolge, and hierarchy of the Hells.
The villain(s).
Bringing the separate factions of Neverwinter together, such as the Ashmadai and the Abolethic Sovereignty, as well as the erinyes of the Sixth. Very nicely done, edge of your seat scenes.

Really, the only con I can say is that I wanted more. There is so, so much more that I wanted, such as the backstories of Mehen and Brin, and what will happen after the ending.

If you're looking for a good book about adventure, devils, and intrigue, then pick up Brimstone Angels now!

Spoiler free review 10. November 2011
Von Robert "Dimndbangr" Hicks - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch

Brimstone Angels is the second stand-alone novel by Erin M. Evans. Her first is The God Catcher: Ed Greenwood Presents Waterdeep.

Brimstone Angels follows the misadventures of a Tiefling named Farideh who unwittingly makes a pact with a cambion and is exiled out of the village with her twin sister and their foster father who is a dragonborn. All this happens in the prologue. Now turned bounty hunters, they end up in Neverwinter where there are many plots unfolding. The levels of intrigue are deep and dangerous and through it all some subplots have Farideh learning more about herself and the connection with her sister and foster father, a devil who is "not really a bad guy", and others that would lead to spoilers.

This book was excellent and very different from the norm that has been rehashed through the FR world. Not only that but it also brings all the elements of what has happened into one great story without the downfalls of those elements. What I mean is everything is there from the spellplague, a little bit of the spellscarred which is used very appropriately, and the Abolethic Sovereignty. The flow of the story is well done, though there are a few little grammar hick-ups but not enough to make it too annoying, and even transitions wonderfully from one event to the next. The pace is the perfect combination of action and exposition and keeps the pages turning. I am not one to read more than 30 to 50 pages a day and this one had me reading more than a 100 in the past 2 days. The character development is also nicely done and there is a good range of depth to the characters

Some criticisms:

1. I really only have one criticism and that is the fact that the devils and such from the Hells really seem nicer than I would have expected. There are some parts where the reader is expecting this niceness as the devils are trying to persuade for their own special gain, but at times I found myself actually rooting for them. Most just didn't seem as evil maybe as they ought to have been.

Some positives:

1. One of the things that really make this novel stand out is the lack of human characters. It is a nice change of pace and is pulled off perfectly.

2. The characters were a joy to read and I felt I could really connect with all of them. Ms. Evans really had their individualities nailed down and each character has their own voice and quirks about them.

Though this book is subtitled as A Neverwinter Novel, the reader does not need any background from R.A. Salvatore's trilogy and really this book could be read without any background info of the world itself. Any mention of the past I feel would only provide a reader with a reason to go back and read previous novels that deal with the Abolethic Sovereignty and the Spellplague. For those tired of the standard human fantasy and want a change of pace, I highly recommend checking this one out. For FR fans this one is great. I feel if Ms. Evans is going to continue writing books like this one and The God Catcher, she will not long find herself among the FR greats like R.A. Salvatore, Paul S. Kemp, Erik Scott de Bie, Bruce Cordell, etc.

Happy reading

Surprised 9. Dezember 2011

"Brimstone Angels" was surprisingly good and blew my expectations out of the water. There is hope for the D&D fantasy novel genre so long as Erin M. Evans continues to write like this. I highly recommend this entertaining and fast read as one of the best time killers that's been written in fantasy in awhile. I will certainly be purchasing miss Evan's future work.

I haven't been a fan of any D&D novels since "Homeland" by R.A. Salvatore and the three original Dragonlance Chronicles by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. This book wasn't as unforgettable as those were but it was definitely worth its purchase price. Don't be suspicious of all the 5 star reviews. It's a great story with neat characters and fun action. I feel bad for not giving it 5 stars but I really try to limit my 5 star reviews to absolutely incredible books. Thank you Erin M. Evans.

This was one of the best books I've read in a very long time. (I think I read the book in about 2 days.) I loved the characters, the struggle they go through, etc. Erin Evans has quickly become one of my favorite writers.

Brimstone Angels beginnings 11. März 2014

Brimstone Angels is a new set of characters in the Forgotten Realms world, if you need a break from the other guys for a breather - this story focuses on a pair of twin Tiefling sisters and their Dragonborn mentor / father-figure.

Now, if you have no idea what a Dragonborn or a Tiefling is in the D&D world, then do not read this book, because you will be lost trying to figure out the races in this novel, but if you do know them, then please read on.

The story follow twin sisters, as one becomes a fierce Glaive wielding warrior, and the other, a warlock that has paid a dear price. Because they have been turned out into the world, they do what the do best - travel and hunt, and these along with their Dragonborn Mentor become bounty hunters to survive.

That premise alone had me hooked, and I read the entire book going through the travelogue and excited to see what happens next. the author does a good job of writing female characters without making them frail and lithe, helpless women. Not only because they are Tiefling, as I am sure THAT helps a ton, but because they have been raised to live a hard life.

My only regret is starting the trilogy without the other two books, and now my wait begins for the next chapter in their saga. Well done and well written.
