When Robert Kincaid drives through the heat and dust of an Iowa summer and turns into Francesca Johnson's farm lane looking for directions, the world-class photographer and the Iowa farm wife are joined in an experience of uncommon truth and stunning beauty that will haunt them forever. The romantic classic of the 1990's.

Pressestimmen

"A hauntingly understated love story, set in small town America, that stays with you long after you've reluctantly finished reading the final page" -- Terence Stamp "We all dream of the chance meeting, that moment when we feel we are really living. If you have ever been in love - truly in love, this is a book you cannot miss. It shares all the joy, pain and sorrow that only someone who has been there can understand. So far, I have read this book at least three times over the years, and each time, it touches a part of me that it never did before. The movie was equally as good but the wonderful part of a book is that you can envision the characters and the events as you wish. The book makes us look at our own lives, our own fragile memories of that true and eternal love that happens but once in a life time, and of making choices that will sometimes haunt us forever. This book is not as it seems on the surface, about lust in a heated moment of passion; it goes much deeper to the heart. It reminds us we are all subject to human feelings, and that the choices we make in life will always be a part of us. It reminds us that "our moment in the sun" will live on in our hearts forever.

This novel is a real mind-blower. Not in terms of being a book, in that regard it's little more than a fast-food hamburger. But in terms of its cultural signifigance, its staggering. The writing is simplistic and the plot is threadbare. And yet...its an American phenomenon. Oprah based a whole hour on the book and movie. By the way, the movie is better than the book, catching the flavor of the story real well. What does it say about us as a country that we devour something like this and elevate it to classic status? Maybe it doesn't say so much about us as people (most of us are a sucker for a good romance, myself included), as it says something about what the literary world is offering up these days.
I guess everyone knows the story by now, I won't elaborate on the plot. But one thing I will say is that Waller's character's did behave in a rather realistic way I thought. People are out there falling in love every day for all the wrong reasons, Robert and Francesca are just another version. The romance came about slowly and innocently enough. The ending rang true, with many of these type novels that doesn't happen. It also gives us a story about common, everyday people, which in the romantic genre is VERY difficult to come by. I personally can't relate to romance in the high fashion world, among royalty or the rich and famous. It had a good atmosphere, one all its own. And that might have been the intangible that really made it work.
Its easier to find faults with this book than to praise it. It lacks style, prose and plot, yet its a monster of a bestseller. Give credit where its due. Waller scored big time. Pulling at the heartstrings can often be the most powerful tool available.

AFTER REVIEWING THE PREVIOUS COMMENTS ON THIS BOOK, I AM STUNNED WITH HOW RIDICULOUS PEOPLE ARE ABOUT A WORK OF FICTION. COME ON PEOPLE, THIS IS NOT A BOTCHED ATTEMPT TO PORTRAY THE HOLOCAUST. THIS IS SIMPLY A BEAUTIFUL STORY, WRITTEN WITH THE INTENT OF AMUSEMENT. PERHAPS I FOUND IT MOVING BECAUSE I CLOSELY IDENTIFIED WITH SOME OF THE FEELINGS THE TWO SHARED. I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THAT, BUT THAT COULD EXPLAIN MY PASSION FOR THIS BOOK. I'VE READ MANY WORKS OF LITERATURE, AND WHILE I AGREE THIS BOOK CAN'T EVEN COME CLOSE TO THE LIKES OF HEMINGWAY AND KEROUAC, IT IS AN ENJOYABLE READ FOR THOSE WHO JUST WANT TO SIT BACK AND ENJOY A GOOD STORY ABOUT LOVE FOUND AND LOST. AND MAYBE IT'S FUN FOR SOME OF US TO HOLD ON TO THE IDEA THAT TRUE LOVE IS OUT THERE, NO MATTER HOW BLEAK THINGS MAY SEEM. PERHAPS MR. WALLER ISN'T THE BEST WRITER OF THE CENTURY, BUT HIS BOOKS HAVE A WAY OF HITTING HOME, THANKS TO THE OPEN WAY HE DISCUSSES EMOTIONS AND INTERACTIONS BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE. TO NEVER HAVE BEEN IN LOVE OR TO HAVE A HEART OF STONE IS TO DESPISE THIS BOOK. OTHERWISE, YOU WILL IDENTIFY WITH IT AND LOVE IT.

Yes, I admit I have read this novel, and although it wasn't the mind-blowing love story some would have you to believe, it ultimately wasn't as horrid as others would have you to believe. It did have several things going for it: a. It was an easy read, appropriate for a lazy afternoon. b. It was not so boring it was unbearable to read. c. It attempted to embody a magical, whimsical sort of feeling, and although it wasn't entirely believable, its heart was in the right place. d. Its unbelievability actually worked to its advantages in some places, because it put a humorous spin on the novel. O.k., so perhaps it was supposed to be romantic when Kincaid does his little monologue about how he was every ship that had ever set to sea, etc. Yeah, so what if it actually sounded pompous, rehearsed, and all together ridiculous? And so what if I would laugh my face off if some guy ever said that to me? It still redeemed itself with its entertainment value, because as you read this, you know that some guy (meaning Wallaer) actually thought this was a truly romantic thing to say. In short, yeah the book had a tendancy to be lame, but hey, we're all entitled to endulge in reading a novel that won't neccesarily contribute to the overall scholarliness of society every now and agian.

I've been reading with great interest the extreme polarity of reader's comments and personal reactions to this book. I just finished listening to the unabridged audio tape and found it - in my opinion - to be among the best examples of beautiful writing style and excellent story telling I've experienced. It's always worth noting when something stirs up such a mix of positive and negative response, especially since the negatives sound as though alot of inner anger has been stirred up! I for one, will see the movie again, read the book more closely, and give a repeat listen to the audio tape (beautifully read by the author).
