Probably the most irresistible love-story formula is that of true love lost, along the lines of Romeo and Juliet, Gone with the Wind, and Titanic. The Bridges of Madison County, a monster hit of the early 1990s, is that kind of torturous melodrama, writ small. Very small. Because lone wolf photographer Robert Kincaid has only four adulterous days to spend with shy Iowa farmhouse wife Francesca Johnson before her husband returns from the state fair with the kids in tow. The novella-sized affair feels much longer than it actually is, mostly because Francesca spends a lot of time gazing at her lover, who is described, by turns, as a "leopard," "peregrine," "shaman," and "star-creature." The worldly loner melts under this adoration and ends up begging her to run away with him to a safari-adventure life in exotic locales all over the world. "We'll make love in the desert sand and drink brandy on balconies in Mombasa, watching dhows from Arabia run up their sails in the first wind of morning. I'll show you lion country and an old French city on the Bay of Bengal." Alas, Francesca keeps fast to her Midwestern family values. She lets the love of her life (who will, as a result, stay true to her until he draws his last breath) drive away in his truck without her, while leaving it up to her diary to confess the affair to her children after her death. --Sumi Hahn Almquist -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Gebundene Ausgabe .

From Kirkus Reviews

Here's a Hallmark card for all those who have loved and lost: a mushy memorial to a brief encounter in the Midwest. One enchanted afternoon, across her Iowa farmyard, Francesca Johnson sees a stranger: ``his eyes looked directly at her, and she felt something jump inside.'' He reminds her of a gazelle, make that a leopard or, better yet, ``some star creature who had drafted in on the tail of a comet,'' for obviously he's come ``a long way, across more than miles.'' In fact, 52-year-old National Geographic photographer Robert Kincaid has driven from Washington State to shoot the covered bridges of Madison County; what wonderful luck for these soon-to-be-lovers, this hot August of 1965, that 45-year- old Francesca's husband Richard, along with their two children, is at a state fair for a week. The Italian Francesca, who married Richard 20 years before in Naples but now feels ``compromised and alone,'' asks the equally lonely, equally sensitive Robert to dinner. That's Day One; on Day Two, they fall in love; and when they make whoopee, it's as much spiritual as physical, what with Robert whispering, ``I am the highway and a peregrine and all the sails that ever went to sea.'' On Day Four, their last together, Francesca announces she must stay with her family, but their bond is forever: As Robert says, ``in a universe of ambiguity, this kind of certainty comes only once.'' Looking back years later, Francesca concludes that undying, romantic, extramarital love is compatible with family values. That conclusion should sit well with the target audience; for as fake and pretentious as it is, this first novel is based on hard-nosed commercial calculations. The publisher, promising a big push, clearly expects its silly goose to lay a golden egg, and, who knows, maybe it will. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. If you have ever been in love - truly in love, this is a book you cannot miss. It shares all the joy, pain and sorrow that only someone who has been there can understand. So far, I have read this book at least three times over the years, and each time, it touches a part of me that it never did before. The movie was equally as good but the wonderful part of a book is that you can envision the characters and the events as you wish. The book makes us look at our own lives, our own fragile memories of that true and eternal love that happens but once in a life time, and of making choices that will sometimes haunt us forever. This book is not as it seems on the surface, about lust in a heated moment of passion; it goes much deeper to the heart. It reminds us we are all subject to human feelings, and that the choices we make in life will always be a part of us. It reminds us that "our moment in the sun" will live on in our hearts forever.

This novel is a real mind-blower. Not in terms of being a book, in that regard it's little more than a fast-food hamburger. But in terms of its cultural signifigance, its staggering. The writing is simplistic and the plot is threadbare. And yet...its an American phenomenon. Oprah based a whole hour on the book and movie. By the way, the movie is better than the book, catching the flavor of the story real well. What does it say about us as a country that we devour something like this and elevate it to classic status? Maybe it doesn't say so much about us as people (most of us are a sucker for a good romance, myself included), as it says something about what the literary world is offering up these days.

I guess everyone knows the story by now, I won't elaborate on the plot. But one thing I will say is that Waller's character's did behave in a rather realistic way I thought. People are out there falling in love every day for all the wrong reasons, Robert and Francesca are just another version. The romance came about slowly and innocently enough. The ending rang true, with many of these type novels that doesn't happen. It also gives us a story about common, everyday people, which in the romantic genre is VERY difficult to come by. I personally can't relate to romance in the high fashion world, among royalty or the rich and famous. It had a good atmosphere, one all its own. And that might have been the intangible that really made it work.

Its easier to find faults with this book than to praise it. It lacks style, prose and plot, yet its a monster of a bestseller. Give credit where its due. Waller scored big time. Pulling at the heartstrings can often be the most powerful tool available.

AFTER REVIEWING THE PREVIOUS COMMENTS ON THIS BOOK, I AM STUNNED WITH HOW RIDICULOUS PEOPLE ARE ABOUT A WORK OF FICTION. COME ON PEOPLE, THIS IS NOT A BOTCHED ATTEMPT TO PORTRAY THE HOLOCAUST. THIS IS SIMPLY A BEAUTIFUL STORY, WRITTEN WITH THE INTENT OF AMUSEMENT. PERHAPS I FOUND IT MOVING BECAUSE I CLOSELY IDENTIFIED WITH SOME OF THE FEELINGS THE TWO SHARED. I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THAT, BUT THAT COULD EXPLAIN MY PASSION FOR THIS BOOK. I'VE READ MANY WORKS OF LITERATURE, AND WHILE I AGREE THIS BOOK CAN'T EVEN COME CLOSE TO THE LIKES OF HEMINGWAY AND KEROUAC, IT IS AN ENJOYABLE READ FOR THOSE WHO JUST WANT TO SIT BACK AND ENJOY A GOOD STORY ABOUT LOVE FOUND AND LOST. AND MAYBE IT'S FUN FOR SOME OF US TO HOLD ON TO THE IDEA THAT TRUE LOVE IS OUT THERE, NO MATTER HOW BLEAK THINGS MAY SEEM. PERHAPS MR. WALLER ISN'T THE BEST WRITER OF THE CENTURY, BUT HIS BOOKS HAVE A WAY OF HITTING HOME, THANKS TO THE OPEN WAY HE DISCUSSES EMOTIONS AND INTERACTIONS BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE. TO NEVER HAVE BEEN IN LOVE OR TO HAVE A HEART OF STONE IS TO DESPISE THIS BOOK. OTHERWISE, YOU WILL IDENTIFY WITH IT AND LOVE IT.
