Kurzbeschreibung

Bridge Worlds: Soterion is the Official Roleplaying Game Book for the fantasy world of Rise of the Magi by Randy Blackwell. Soterion is a Fantasy World; one of the many Bridge Worlds (a network of worlds, planes, and dimensions connected by Musterion a portal world made of ever shifting brick tunnels).
This fantasy world is not only fun but also a fortress of purity within the world of imagination, where spiritual symbolism and Biblical truth reign supreme. Biblical knowledge, teamwork, and problem solving are but a few of the skills encouraged, while taking part in this fantastic new world. Soterion is a Christian Role-playing Game that combines Fantasy, Science Fiction and Steampunk themes like never before. Be one of the first to lay your hands on this book and explore the world of Soterion created by Randy Blackwell and George Clark.

This is a review of the Kindle edition - so any problems I have with the layout only refer to the Kindle edition. The print version may vary.

Warning: This game is meant for followers of a specific religion. If you are not a follower of that religion, you may find this book offensive.

Background: a long history, many kingdoms and a lot of races to choose from (13 races)

Layout: Chapter headings don't really stand out in the Kindle edition, and with the odd paragraph indenting - it does make it harder to look things up. There also appears to be odd hyphenation now and then, with words that aren't at the end of a line. There seems to be odd sorting throughout - especially with lists of races - surely it would be easier on the reader to list items alphabetically? Changes in fonts, font colours and heading capitalisation. Chapter order is all over the place. To sum up: Guys! Get a better editor!

Dice Mechanic: 3d8 open ended versus a target number. The variant here is that rolling 1 is also a positive open ended result. Target numbers are modified by skills and attributes

Character creation: 6 randomly determined attributes, modified by race. Characters can choose from a number of different professions which operate like packages of recommended skills. Lots of skills to choose from, all well described - keeps with the old school idea that individual weapons require a skill each. I've never understood how this helps balance in a game.

Combat: Similar to old D&D, including the idea that armour somehow makes you harder to hit, combined with the more realistic idea that armour reduces damage taken. Added to this is the jury-rig old D&D compensation idea that blunt weapons do more damage to armour. So basically, it's a mix of fixes which really requires someone to rewrite it who has actually worn armour at some stage. Combat uses rounds and turns, a round being 8 seconds - which is also old D&D, doing one weapons strike in 8 seconds infers that everyone is operating in slow motion - or that a "strike" is an abstracted term for a series of hits and misses during this period of time.

In summary: It's 2nd ed D&D with a religious flavour. The background is less derivative and more original than D&D, the game mechanics are impressively similar, swapping 3d8 for d20. I don't think this book would be too offensive to folk that don't follow the religion of the writers - Although I highly recommend skipping the introduction if easily offended. The game plays fine without being a follower of the writer's particular religion, so if you like D&D and want a variant on its setting (but not its rules) - this could be for you.

This book is exceptionally well done. As a collector of several of these kinds of books I'm impressed by the level of detail.
Can't wait to play!
