Having spent most of her life in a county hospital for the insane, Lacey O'Carroll jumps at the chance to leave Ireland and go to Wyoming with her friend, Nurse Kate. Kate is a mail order bride for Caleb Weatherspoon and Lacey is willing to marry a friend of Caleb's, if he'll have her. She knows she has to hide her past, after all, what man would want a mad woman for his wife? John Winterhawke is suspicious of the beautiful Irish woman who offers to be his wife and thinks there must be something wrong with her for her to want to marry a half-Indian. Hawke agrees to Caleb's suggestion to test her and brings her to his ranch, Winterhawke. He gives her until the preacher comes to marry Kate and Caleb to prove herself. Although she seems completely ignorant of domestic skills, Lacey has a gentle quality with the horses and Hawke is intrigued by her. Lacey does her best to please Hawke, sometimes with disastrous results. Hawke agrees to marry her anyway and quickly realizes he's going to have to teach Lacey more than how to cook and sew-- she is also naive about her wifely duties! In time, Lacey and Hawke get to know each other, but not without many misunderstandings. Despite their differences, they are both accustomed to being outcasts and fail to realize that they have so much to offer each other-- including love.A funny, romantic story that will make you laugh! Sharon Ihle knows how to grab her readers' attention and hold it! The realistic characters and range of emotions make The Bride Wore Spurs worth reading! Ms. Ihle's sense of humor adds so much to the plot. A terrific book!Kristina Wright -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. All rights reserved

Kathleen Lacey O’Carroll knew she faced an uncertain future when she arrived in Wyoming as a mail-order bride—especially when she learned that the man she was to marry hadn’t actually ordered her. How could John Winterhawke, a fiercely independent and unsettling handsome half-Indian known as Hawke, possibly make room in his heart and in his life for her?

As far as Hawke was concerned, the last thing he needed was a high-spirited, overeager Irish wife who knew nothing about surviving on the harsh prairie.

But once the determined Lacey sensed the rough kindness and simmering hunger under Hawke’s forbidding demeanor, she set out to match his dark passion with her own—and claim his wild heart on her terms.

"Master storyteller Sharon Ihle spins a heartwarming tale full of humor and tears... brilliant, candid, and poignant dialogue. This is a book you'll read!" ~Rendezvous

If you place yourself in the context of the environment, a time when females barely had a voice in society, then you can see how this girl could have ended so clueless. If you add lack of education to cultural traits then it is understandable that these females could have a temper, come across as outspoken but secretive at the same time. What all characters, except poor Caleb share, is that they do not communicate their deepest pain and fears. Of course, they make assumptions about the actions of another and take action accordingly. The hero is a beautiful man that has been mentally beaten by prejudice, in spite of which, he beats the odds and becomes a rancher. He still has a soul so he takes time to try to understand what triggers his wife's attitudes.

I liked that the author is able to show how ignorance and prejudice can destroy lives, while patience and communication heals them.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Sweetly fun 26. April 2012

This isn't an erotic romance. IF that's what you're searching for - don't give the author a bad review because you couldn't find the right book you wanted.

This is a fun, romantic story about two people learning about each other.
A man used to being spurned because of his parent's choices; a young woman just looking to be treated like she was normal. He's patient and gradually decides it's not so bad having her around; she's trying to fit in and learn quickly so he doesn't send her away.

Anyone who read it and claimed he was one way and she was weak - really didn't read the story or the words at all. She's spirited and hungry to learn and live; he's afraid to find out she might be like all the whites that had treated him badly his whole life.

A delightful, simple and fun read. Thank you.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Two outcasts find love 21. April 2012

How do you know what you are capable of before you test your mettle with life and trauma?
Hawke and Miss Kathleen Lacey O'Carroll make for a pair of strange star crossed lovers, because one is a half breed Indian rancher in Wyoming and the other is from an insane asylum in Ireland. As it is often found in historical romance novels, she does have some mental/comportment issues as well as being an orphan but there are hint that she is a rich orphan and the institution was probably keeping her because she could pay her way. She does have a great friend that is a nurse that is going to America to become a mail-order bride and she goes with her to marry a neighbor and find freedom. I find Lacey's story fascinating and there are so many things that could go wrong for her before she finds a kind man (aka Hawke).
Two outcasts find love and friendship in this historical western romance novel.
Western historical romance novel, this was clearly a printed/published novel with careful editing and a good story. There are a few conversion problems with missing letters, but very very rare. I would look up this author for more novels because her subtle romance was tasteful and humorous at times.
