Kurzbeschreibung

6. Mai 2013
While to many, LEGO bricks are 'just a toy', to an ever-growing army of fans they provide a challenging and enjoyable modelling medium. These fans, calling themselves 'AFOLs', or Adult Fans of LEGO, have taken it upon themselves to recreate local landmarks using just the bricks that you may find at a local store. LEGO models created by adult fans, however, don't resemble those that many people created as a child. Created by masters of their medium, these fabulously detailed models may contain thousands of pieces - or perhaps just a handful. Either way, the talented artists have an intimate knowledge of every piece and colour available. Skilfully choosing the ideal piece to recreate a well-known landmark, they may create a model indistinguishable from the real thing, or evoke the spirit of a building in just a few small pieces. In fact, landmarks and cityscapes - from the New York skyline to the Sagrada Familia, London's St Pancras and the amazing towers of Beijing and Hong Kong - have long been a source of inspiration for LEGO builders. In this book, LEGO artist Warren Elsmore takes us on a world tour and explores more than 12 global cities and their iconic structures. Each city is examined and recreated in LEGO form. Comprising amazing artwork, exploratory photographs and detailed breakdowns, Brick City looks at the essence of what makes an urban landscape recognizable.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Warren Elsmore is an adult fan of LEGO ('AFOL') based in Edinburgh, UK. He's been in love with the plastic brick since the age of four and is now heavily involved in the LEGO fan community as well as working with a number of commercial companies to realise their dreams in plastic. Warren is best known for his model of St Pancras station in London. A 150,000-brick, 4m (131/2ft) long behemoth, this model has been written about in numerous news articles and was the subject of a BBC feature article, alongside Warren's 6m (191/2ft) long model of the Forth Bridge. Warren also organises AFOLCON and The LEGO Show - a dedicated LEGO fan convention, followed by the largest public LEGO event in the UK, which attracts many thousands of fans.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great resource for aspiring LEGO artists 11. April 2013
Von Pushpin - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
Whether you are a builder or just fan who likes admiring LEGO artwork, this is probably a great book for you. I am thoroughly enjoying it. Photography and production quality is very high. Comes with two pull-out posters which is great to check out more detail in the two mega structures presented but nothing I would really want hanging on a wall.

This book focuses on real world icons from major cities across the world. The book mostly focuses on architecture but there are models of other things that you might find in a particular major city like a New York hot dog stand or a London phone booth. The author also features mosaic artwork and LEGO models in different scales (mini, minifig, mega(?), etc)

If you're a big LEGO fan you've probably already seen tons of examples of what creativity and LEGO bricks can bring. What this book might add to that is just how some of these models are done. Step-by-step instructions are given for some of the models presented. Mostly these are mini-scale models, facades or a standalone tower. I like this because it helps me picture how some of the models are created and new techniques to learn. Larger structures in the book, of course, do not have instructions but I feel that if you had the bricks, the time and creativity the book would be a good tool in achieving grander scale projects. With just over 250 pages and dozens of models to build, the instructions are not quite as detailed or step-by-step as your usual LEGO instructions. The instructions are condensed so that several layers of bricks are applied in each step. The instructions are also a bit small so it's difficult to see all the details but you still get the general idea. Older children and teenagers can manage.

For parents and children: you only have to look at the cover of the book to realize that this is meant for serious builders and LEGO collectors. A starter bucket of LEGO bricks will not be enough to pursue most of the projects presented in the book. It's a great source of inspiration but it does require a fair amount of bricks that may be difficult to acquire off retail shelves.

Overall, a great buy. I'm a huge collector of LEGO (and books about LEGO) and this is a great buy for older LEGO fans and serious builders. My only complaint is that the pages could have been bigger to accommodate more detail in the instructions.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Synergy of LEGO, Architecture, and History 17. April 2013
Von Devin S. Olson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
Book arrived yesterday, and I haven't been able to put it down. It is filled with interesting bits of information and history covering over 100 landmarks from around the world -and how to recreate them using LEGO.

The author includes advice on how and where to purchase LEGO at reasonable prices, construction techniques, and color blending.

There are photos of the finished LEGO models, instructional diagrams, and commentary on the construction of many of the models.

Some of my favorites are the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign, the Chrysler Building (New York), St. Pancras Station (London), and the Pearl Tower (Shanghai). There are also very cool "little" things, like a New York Taxi, San Francisco Cable Car, and a Parisian Cafe.

This is a very cool book. Even if you never actually build the projects (although I can't imagine why not), you will still enjoy reading through it over and over again.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A World Tour of LEGO Cuteness 1. Juni 2013
Von Ashley Glennon - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Warren Elsmore's Brick City is a delightful LEGO picture book absolutely packed with artfully arranged photographs and building instructions. Builders of all ages and abilities will be inspired by the range of both large and small models of some of the world's most famous structures.

The book features crisp, full color instructions throughout, although some of the instructions are printed a bit small and may try the patience of some builders.

The first 29 pages offer insightful, visual advice on designing, building and choosing the right parts for your creations, then Elsmore takes you on a world tour of building fun.

Elsmore excels at depicting the creations of his homeland--the United Kingdom-- and the book includes an adorable Buckingham Palace wedding scene along with some memorable images from the 2012 London Olympics. It doesn't stop there, though, as Elsmore covers every continent with equal cuteness.

Discerning parents are bound to love this book as it truly reads like a global building atlas, but younger builders are likely to have a hard time assembling some models due to many of the advanced techniques employed. Despite this, this book offers an excellent overview of LEGO building with a global twist. Even if readers don't build a single thing pictured in the book, the visual feast of creations and inspiration is satisfying enough.

As a bonus feature, this book comes with two folded posters inside the front and back covers. The front poster is of London's St. Pancras station, and the back poster is of the new, World Trade Center complex. Both are entirely built of LEGO bricks, of course.

This colorful book belongs in the collection of every serious LEGO fan.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great idea book for amateur builders with Lego 14. August 2013
Von Canadianladybug - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I have four kids - all loving to use Lego to build something new. Sometimes they follow a plan. Other times they are very creative. What I love about creativity is that they can check out what others have done in order to get more ideas. That's why I am always on the lookout to discover more ideas for them to build.

Imagine my delight when I stumbled - literally - on a particular title giving step-by-step directions on building famous landscapes found throughout the world. That's what Brick City is about. Some of the constructions included in this book will have step-by-step guidance for your child to follow while others will only show the incredible details included in the buildings. Not only will you get the step-by-step instructions but you also get a list of the bricks needed to make the building.

While flipping the pages of this book, I also discovered that the Montreal Biodome and the St. Joseph's Oratory has been made in Lego. What a surprised it was to see two of the famous landmarks of my birthplace. The models have various sizes going from a scale of 5 cm to 122 cm tall.

At the beginning of the book, the child or Lego fan can read more about how building were made at the scale for Lego. You will also get a small introduction on how CAD Modeling is used for this kind of Lego creations. The reader will also get some building tips, a practice project , mosaic techniques, and a choice of projects to complete within the book.

Needless to say that I am very impressed with this book and I know that some brick builders in this household will have a blast exploring and creating their own famous icons from around the world. Would you believe me if I tell you you can build Marilyn Monroe above the subway vent with her skirt flowing around? Yes it's in the book along with instructions to build the famous Red Phone Box in London and other famous places. Also enclosed with the book are two dramatic posters featuring LEGO® model photos of architectural world landmarks.

So if you have an avid brick builder in your household, I strongly recommend the book Brick City to you. It is packed with interesting projects and will allow your child (or Lego fan) to explored a new level of construction. This book would make a perfect birthday gift or a Christmas surprise under the tree.

This very well produced book is excellent quality. Wonderful photographs and instructions make this a great volume for the 11+ Lego fan. The complexity of some of the builds, and the content of the text lends this book more towards a slightly older audience.
