In The Breakdown of Nations Leopold Kohr shows that throughout history, people who have lived in small states are happier, more peaceful, more creative and more prosperous. He argues that virtually all our political and social problems would be greatly diminished if the world's major countries were to dissolve back into the small states from which they sprang. Rather than making even larger political unions, in the mistaken belief that this will bring peace and security, we should minimise the aggregation of power by returning to a patchwork of small, relatively powerless states where leaders are accessible to and responsive to the people. This new edition of The Breakdown of Nations is published at a time when Britain faces its most important political decision for hundreds of years - whether or not to join a common European currency. Many believe that this would lead inexorably to a European sub-state, so it is timely to re-examine the implications of the size of political groupings, whether they be states nations or federations.

Kohr originated the concept of "the human scale", an idea which was later popularized by his friend E.F. Schumacher, notably in his book "Small is Beautiful".

This Book Will Change Your World View

Kohr calls for peaceful dissolution of nation states into smaller independent entities which can network or confederate as they choose. His book is a bible of the radical decentralist movement and applauded by anarchists, libertarians, greens alike. It's a fascinating read and will make you realize how much you yearn to belong to a real community and not just be an anoymous cipher in a giant nation state. Quote from Kohr, to give you a flavor: There seems to be only one cause behind all forms of social misery: bigness. Oversimplified as this may seem, we shall find the idea more easily acceptable if we consider that bigness, or oversize, is really much more than just a social problem. It appears to be the one and only problem permeating all creation.Whenever something is wrong, something is too big. And if the body of a people becomes diseased with the fever of aggression, brutality, collectivism, or massive idiocy, it is not because it has fallen victim to bad leadership or mental derangement. It is because human beings, so charming as individuals or in small aggregations have been welded onto overconcentrated social units. That is when they begin to slide into uncontrollable catastrophe. For social problems, to paraphrase the population doctrine of Thomas Malthus, have the unfortunate tendency to grow at a geometric ratio with the growth of the organism of which they are part, while the ability of man to cope with them, if it can be extended at all, grows only at an arithmetic ratio. Which means that, if a society grows beyond its optimum size, its problems must eventually outrun the growth of those human faculties which are necessary for dealing with them. Hence it is always bigness, and only bigness, which is the problem of existence. The problem is not to grow but to stop growing; the answer: not union but division.

Fine explanation of current US politicial situation

I bought my first copy of this book a number of years ago. Since that time I've bought several more copies and am getting ready to buy another, because I've given the others to friends. Many of my friends in the States fear, on a very basic level, whether the fate that befell great countries of the past can come to the U.S. Mr. Kohl gives the answer to that query, although at the time he penned his study he believed such a dire fate would not befall the U.S. because its political structure (i.e., a federal republic) disperses political power in such a way as to inhibit the "bigness" that brings doom to any organization that becomes too large. It appears, though, that those who WANT the U.S. to abandon the federal/state structure and to become everything to everybody seem to absolutely hate this book. But Kohl was right. Read this the book and understand where the U.S. is headed.
