Jamal loves playing football, which isn't easy if your goalie only has one leg and you keep having to dodge landmines to get your ball back. Jamal's stubborn little sister Bibi is even better at football than Jamal. But girls playing football is against the law in Afganistan. When it is discovered that Jamal's mother has been secretly running a school, the family must leave their home immediately and begin a long and dangerous journey to Australia. The children survive separation from their parents, hunger, and violent smugglers only to find that Australia isn't as welcoming as they had thought but, even though they face an uncertain future, Jamal, Bibi and their parents know that as long as they are together, that is all that matters.

An exciting story about soccer-loving refugees 30. September 2010
Von John Gibbs - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
What would life be like for a soccer-loving brother and sister from Afghanistan whose family suddenly had to leave their own country and become refugees, heading for Australia on boats run by people smugglers? That is the scenario posed by Morris Gleitzman in this book, suitable for young readers between 9 and 12 years of age. The story touches on some themes which are close to home for many Australians.

When writing a book for children about children from another culture, do you try to describe the other culture accurately, or do you try to create characters that will be easy for the reader to identify with? In this case, the author has opted for the latter approach, in my view correctly, as it is more important for the reader to understand how to respond compassionately than it is for the reader to understand what the other culture is really like.

The book provides a story which is exciting and emotionally involving. The dangerous conditions and exploitation to which refugees are subjected are related well, as are the high human costs of Australia's border protection policies. This is a good book to give a boy or girl who is ready to explore the values of justice and compassion.

Sometimes to save the people you love, you have to go overboard 9. Juli 2005
Von Toni Masters - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Jamal and Bibi have a dream, to lead Australia into the next soccer world cup.Jamal and Bibi live in Afghanistan, their mother is the teacher of an illegal school and their dad is a taxi driver. The government in Afghanistan is evil and tried to blow up their house, and kill their mother, for running a school.Jamal and Bibi are in danger, so their parents decide they will travel illegally to Australia, as asylum-seekers, seeking asylum. This is the hilarious and down trodding story of a young boy and his sister fighting for their freedom and rights, rights any perople deserve to have.I highly reccomend this book.

Morris Gleizman is a master of the well-intentioned ignorant. This is incredibly fast paced. Fantastic for late Primary and early secondary and also for reluctant readers.

The fact that it builds empathy and compassion for ssylum seekers without patronising them is a bonus.
