I must have been in the 3rd grade when I first read this book. I remember the weekly trips my class would have to take to the library. As a child, I didn't like to read very much. I found it very difficult to complete a book if it didn't capture my interest with in the first few pages. So there I was every week perusing through the many shelves of books, trying to find something remotely interesting. I checked out everything from the most simplistic stories, like Curious George and Romana the Pest, and even attempted to read, what I considered at the time, more mature stories such as The Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew mysteries. Yet, I still wasn't quite satisfied.
One day, however, I came across this big red hardcovered book titled, The Boxcar Children. Little did I know that this was to become one of my all time favorites. I was suprised to find myself completely enthralled with this book only after reading the first few pages. The story captured my heart completely. I was so into the book that I finished it in one sitting. Which was definitely a first for me. I often imagined what I would do if my parents died, and my two sisters and I were orphaned. How would we survive on our own? I admired the way the children were able to care for themselves with what little money, food, and shelter they had. I wanted to feel that strength and courage inside me. It is truly a story of independence, strength, and love in it's purest form. I finished this book with a better sense of myself, and my own abilities. I returned the book the following week, but checked it out as often as I could. I never grew tired of reading about their adventures.

I can still remember the day in the 4th grade I checked out this book from the Crescent School library. Up until that time I had never read any book of substance, just those 5 minute "See Jane run" titles that are so forgettable. This book had me rivited. I was so proud that I had read such an "adult" book. There was such a sense of accomplishment, and the story was so interesting that I blew through it in just a few days. A year earlier I was held back in the 3rd grade and was not a very successful student. This book changed all of that for me. For the first time reading was something fun, and not just homework. After I read it I wanted to read more of these kinds of books but the school year was ending. That summer I enrolled in the Public Library Reading Club and read 75 more books. Today I look back on THE BOXCAR CHILDREN with fond memories. I went looking for it as a Christmas Present for my brother's son who is now in the 3rd grade. I was suprised to find that it was published during the heart of World War II in 1942. Great things endure and obviously I was not the only one to have discovered this book. I want to thank Mrs. Evelyn Wilkerson, that wonderful librarian who suggested the book for me. She gave me such a wonderful Christmas gift, the gift of reading for the enjoyment and pleasure of it. I totally recommend this title for any young person!!!! I always seem to be in need of Presents, I think I will go back and buy a few extra copies just in case :-) Ed Henderson Associate Editor of Scouter's Journal Magazine Past Chairman of the Spalding County Library Board

I first read this book in the 3rd grade and still read it (I'm now 33 years old!) I love this book. In 3rd grade it was great because the kids lived by themselves and did all the housekeeping with no adult interference. They are good kids, but not perfect (Benny has temper tantrums) and care for one another. They find their own dishes, cook their own meals, swim...everything that needs doing they do by themselves. And they do it right. I also really like Surprise Island and Caboose Mystery I think it's called. The first 19 books or so I call the 'original' books...after that another writer continues the story and changes the characters somewhat, but the stories are still good. The later books are more 'modern up-to-date' since the others were written at least 30 years ago! Even though they are old they are still great to read - even for adults!

I read this book in 1970. Of all the books I've ever read, this one is the most memorable. At the time, getting me to read a book was nearly impossible.
A bookmobile came to our school in Syracuse, New York and invited anyone interested to visit. I remember thinking, "what a easy way to get out of class," so I jumped into the book filled truck and started to browse. I stumbled across "The Boxcar Children" and began to read a few sentences, then paragraphs... I couldn't put the book down.
It's been 29 years and I still remember the story as if I read the book yesterday. It's adventurous, heart-warming, and intelligent. It's tells how friendship, love & unity can help you overcome even the worst circumstances. I recommend this book to children of all ages!

I liked how the author of the book kept having the characters running away from different people. I found it to be easy to read, as I am in school and it was a very challenging "Accelerated Reading" test. We have been asked to read 5 "chapter books" a quarter this year and I was very nervous about this. But the Boxcar book kept me wanting to read more and more. It was one of the only books that kept my interest for the whole story. It was not the easiest book I ever read but also not the hardest. I am looking forward to reading more in the Boxcar Children series. I have already looked in the library and bookstore. I have added them to my Christmas list as well.
