Kurzbeschreibung

Not every ugly duckling becomes a swan ...
In the wake of the disastrous attack on the Golden City, Lady Light Spinner has become Grand Sorceress and Elaine, the Bookworm, has been settling into her positions as Head Librarian and Privy Councillor. But any hope of vanishing into her books is negated when a new magician of staggering power appears in the city, one whose abilities seem to defy the known laws of magic.
Johan is a Powerless, a person born to a magical family yet lacking powers of his own. His dreams of a better life are curbed by his family, who see him as a cripple at best and a burden at worst. But when a political protest goes horrifically wrong, Johan discovers that his true powers have merely been buried, waiting for their chance to explode into the world. As he comes to grips with his newfound talents, he discovers that he finally has a chance to realise his ambitions ...
... But for the Golden City, reeling after the devastation of six months earlier, he may be the greatest threat the city has ever seen. Elaine must unlock the mystery behind his powers before the political factions can kill him ... or use him to unleash a nightmare.

Returning to well-loved characters from Christopher Nuttall’s bestselling Bookworm and introducing new ones, Bookworm II: The Very Ugly Duckling explores power – and the effect it has on the human mind.

Born and raised in Edinburgh, Chris created an alternate history website and eventually graduated to writing full-sized novels. As an indie author he has self-published a number of novels, but this is his fifth fantasy to be published by Elsewhen Press. Following on from the success of the bestselling Bookworm, The Very Ugly Duckling continues Elaine's story. Chris is currently living in Borneo with his wife, muse, and critic Aisha.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Geht so. 15. Januar 2014

Cannot wait for the next book. This one brought interesting twists and new ideas. Who liked the first one will certainly like this one. Good development for our heroine , two.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting Series 13. April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I already liked the first book of the series, and despite some negative criticism here about this second installment I didn't find it less interesting or intriguing than the first one. I'm already looking forward to the next book, as I'm interested in finding out how Elaine, Johan and the other "good ones" are going to fight against the Witch-King and those who (sometimes unawarely) help him.
I like that the "good" characters have insecurities and often are tempted by their powers to do things that can or do harm others. Sometimes they give in to these temptations, yet they learn from their mistakes and try to do better. I think these temporary flaws make the characters more likable and "realistic".
All in all a good read!

2.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointment after the first book 5. Mai 2014
Von Samuel Weber - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I really liked the first book in this series, but was seriously disappointed in this one. It is hard to believe that the same person wrote both books!

The problem I had was the characters: not only does everyone in this book act like extremely emotional children, the characters, like Elaine, who I'd loved in the first book seem to have been replaced by strangers who behave extremely differently.

For example: at the end of the first book Elaine has a secret that, if known, will probably upset the whole empire and lead to her almost certain death. In fact, someone had already attempted to kill her because of it. So what is one of the first things that she does in this book? (Don't worry, this isn't a spoiler.) She blabs it to a rather unstable teenager that she just met. Why? So he will trust her. Right. Apparently the fact that she is one of the most important people in the Empire isn't enough. And this is well worth risking not only her life but the whole empire.

Unfortunately, this is typical of how everyone in this whole book behaves. Everyone seems to be impulsive, emotional and irrational. Ultimately, it is hard to care about a story whose plot is driven entirely by irrational people. Worse, it is hard to care about new-Elaine, who seems to be very much a different person than the Elaine from the first novel.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Decent but strangely tame 2. Februar 2014
Von J. Nolt - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The first novel had a dirtier mind, and I appreciated that. Also a bit more willing to go for the jugular, description-wise.

The second book is, I think, completely free of explicit sex (beyond abstract descriptions that is) and fairly tame in its description of violence. Perhaps the author wishes to re-release the first novel as a young adult book? In any case, I personally preferred the version of Elaine with a sex drive that got used.

It's certainly full of emotional abuse and family drama. It got a little old and I found myself skimming to the next section that featured Elaine.

I also miss Daria, who provided a semblance of comic relief and variety In the first novel. I wonder why the author decided she didn't have a place in the second? This time around Elaine is more confident, but a little 2-dimensional IMO.

Still, despite my qualms, I'm interested in following the story a bit further, though I wouldn't mind if the next book had more Inquisitors in it. They're a good creation, and interesting. Give us more Dread & Cass!

4.0 von 5 Sternen I like it 31. Januar 2014

Bookworm II is unlike any book that i have read in the fantasy genre in terms of the magic displayed in this novel which makes for an intriguing read leaving me unable to put it down until it was done. That combined with the intricate empire it's set in and the loveable characters Bookworm II makes for a fantastic read

5.0 von 5 Sternen Better than first book 30. Januar 2014
Von David G - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
It is not required you read the first book but it might help enjoyment. This is not a deep piece of literature. But it is a fun, fast paced adventure well written and the Kindle price is very attractive. There is one overriding moral issue and that is absolute power corrupts and it deals with the morally corrosive nature of having power, and a society that supports and reinforces this feeling of superiority to others.

I will not synopsize the plot; you can get that from authors description. But I will say Elaine ( the head librarian/bookworm) becomes a real person, making decisions and taking responsibility something that she seemed adverse in the first novel. The "hero" Johan gets lots of sympathy votes for a difficult upbringing. But he is too naive, too simple. He takes on blame and guilt when he should not and does not take obvious actions. If someone is converted to glass and breaks and you have undefined magical powers why not at least try and bring them together? If a building is on fire with children on top why reinforce part of the building instead of putting out the flames, providing a ladder, moving the children.... He obviously has tremendous power why not challenge for high sorcerer and then enact whatever new laws he wants instead of challenging outside the system. He would only have to fight one magician instead of the entire governments stable of magicians that way. This would all make more sense if Johan was twelve instead of supposedly almost an adult. I can only assume the author is reserving the option of a love complication, perhaps even with Elaine, where he drops hints along this line.

Like many current authors the story is left somewhat open at the end for the next sequel. I dislike this growing practice but in this case at least the book comes to a reasonable conclusion and can stand alone. You are not required to buy the next book / installment in an ongoing soap opera although you want to because the story was fun to read. So the end is a bit of a cliffhanger but the story was at a fairly good wrapped position before the teaser was added.

The pricing also avoids the greed that has infected many of the OTHER authors who spit out multiple sequels milking a series until they have extracted the last bit of fun and profit from the series.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A long time in coming, very good 22. Januar 2014

This is not my favorite series out there to be sure, but it is similar in theme to stuff I like. It has taken so long since the first book that I really couldn't remember the plot until I was a few chapters in. One thing I like was that as to a continue to develop plot from the heroine of the first book a new character origin is brought in to explore. If you like the name of the wind, eye of the moonrat, you'll like this.

I hope the next one comes out sooner.
