Not every ugly duckling becomes a swan ...
In the wake of the disastrous attack on the Golden City, Lady Light Spinner has become Grand Sorceress and Elaine, the Bookworm, has been settling into her positions as Head Librarian and Privy Councillor. But any hope of vanishing into her books is negated when a new magician of staggering power appears in the city, one whose abilities seem to defy the known laws of magic.
Johan is a Powerless, a person born to a magical family yet lacking powers of his own. His dreams of a better life are curbed by his family, who see him as a cripple at best and a burden at worst. But when a political protest goes horrifically wrong, Johan discovers that his true powers have merely been buried, waiting for their chance to explode into the world. As he comes to grips with his newfound talents, he discovers that he finally has a chance to realise his ambitions ...
... But for the Golden City, reeling after the devastation of six months earlier, he may be the greatest threat the city has ever seen. Elaine must unlock the mystery behind his powers before the political factions can kill him ... or use him to unleash a nightmare.

Returning to well-loved characters from Christopher Nuttall’s bestselling Bookworm and introducing new ones, Bookworm II: The Very Ugly Duckling explores power – and the effect it has on the human mind.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Christopher Nuttall has been planning sci-fi books since he learned to read. Born and raised in Edinburgh, Chris created an alternate history website and eventually graduated to writing full-sized novels. Studying history independently allowed him to develop worlds that hung together and provided a base for storytelling. After graduating from university, Chris started writing full-time. As an indie author he has self-published a number of novels, but this is his fifth fantasy to be published by Elsewhen Press. Following on from the success of the bestselling Bookworm, The Very Ugly Duckling continues Elaine's story. Chris is currently living in Borneo with his wife, muse, and critic Aisha.

Cannot wait for the next book. This one brought interesting twists and new ideas. Who liked the first one will certainly like this one. Good development for our heroine , two.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting Series 13. April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I already liked the first book of the series, and despite some negative criticism here about this second installment I didn't find it less interesting or intriguing than the first one. I'm already looking forward to the next book, as I'm interested in finding out how Elaine, Johan and the other "good ones" are going to fight against the Witch-King and those who (sometimes unawarely) help him.
I like that the "good" characters have insecurities and often are tempted by their powers to do things that can or do harm others. Sometimes they give in to these temptations, yet they learn from their mistakes and try to do better. I think these temporary flaws make the characters more likable and "realistic".
All in all a good read!

2.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointment after the first book 5. Mai 2014
Von Samuel Weber - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I really liked the first book in this series, but was seriously disappointed in this one. It is hard to believe that the same person wrote both books!

The problem I had was the characters: not only does everyone in this book act like extremely emotional children, the characters, like Elaine, who I'd loved in the first book seem to have been replaced by strangers who behave extremely differently.

For example: at the end of the first book Elaine has a secret that, if known, will probably upset the whole empire and lead to her almost certain death. In fact, someone had already attempted to kill her because of it. So what is one of the first things that she does in this book? (Don't worry, this isn't a spoiler.) She blabs it to a rather unstable teenager that she just met. Why? So he will trust her. Right. Apparently the fact that she is one of the most important people in the Empire isn't enough. And this is well worth risking not only her life but the whole empire.

Unfortunately, this is typical of how everyone in this whole book behaves. Everyone seems to be impulsive, emotional and irrational. Ultimately, it is hard to care about a story whose plot is driven entirely by irrational people. Worse, it is hard to care about new-Elaine, who seems to be very much a different person than the Elaine from the first novel.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Loved the First book, but terrible sequel 17. Mai 2014
Von Harlequin - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The First book had depth, but the second was a disappointment. I guess Chistopher Nuttall writes good books, but he struggles with sequels.

The First book should have ended with Elaine joining the Inquisition (continuing her growth as a character), but instead she is still in the Golden city, and is no longer the MC. I found the method of magic in the first book to be well though-out (if vague), but this book unnecessarily re-imagined it for the new MC, and made him too OP. Books with an OverPowered MC are unimaginative, which is why i was so taken with Bookworm 1.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Very Disappointed 7. Juli 2014

I thought that while the overall plot was good, this book wasn't worth my time to read it. The writing itself was poor. Characters say things, "dryly" or scowl after they say something so often, it breaks the focus on the story. Much of the text doesn't really move the story along, it is setting up the "rules" for the bookworm universe and how it operates, and is quite repetitive. I think the author could have spent a little more time and come out with a much better book. The first book was much better.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Decent but strangely tame 2. Februar 2014
Von J. Nolt - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The first novel had a dirtier mind, and I appreciated that. Also a bit more willing to go for the jugular, description-wise.

The second book is, I think, completely free of explicit sex (beyond abstract descriptions that is) and fairly tame in its description of violence. Perhaps the author wishes to re-release the first novel as a young adult book? In any case, I personally preferred the version of Elaine with a sex drive that got used.

It's certainly full of emotional abuse and family drama. It got a little old and I found myself skimming to the next section that featured Elaine.

I also miss Daria, who provided a semblance of comic relief and variety In the first novel. I wonder why the author decided she didn't have a place in the second? This time around Elaine is more confident, but a little 2-dimensional IMO.

Still, despite my qualms, I'm interested in following the story a bit further, though I wouldn't mind if the next book had more Inquisitors in it. They're a good creation, and interesting. Give us more Dread & Cass!

Bookworm II is unlike any book that i have read in the fantasy genre in terms of the magic displayed in this novel which makes for an intriguing read leaving me unable to put it down until it was done. That combined with the intricate empire it's set in and the loveable characters Bookworm II makes for a fantastic read
