When mankind is visited by Three Great Apocalypses, the only thing standing in their way is a feckless but loyal, easily distracted yet occasionally ferocious German shepherd named Bones, a one-time cadaver dog with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.  This is his amazing story.

In Bones, our hero must battle a plague of dangerous parasites that brings the dead back to life with the goal of destroying the planet. Shepherd finds Bones delivered to earthquake-devastated Los Angeles to hunt for survivors only to run afoul of armies of rage-driven rats and birds emerging from the rubble. And when mankind reaches its final hour and a pocket of surviving Indians are all that's left of humanity, it falls on Bones to save the species before civilization is wiped out forever in Alpha.

Three Apocalyptic novellas of nature run amok, three interwoven stories that feature a German shepherd at the center of the things, three stories with so much action you might just explode reading them.

Includes prequel short story, Mongrel.

Praise for Wheaton's Four Nails in the Coffin:

"Remarkably character-driven...Wheaton convincingly showcases his talents as a writer of horror prose, taking his time to craft characters who are thoroughly fleshed out and engaging without holding off too long on the suspense...proves here to be a quite gifted storyteller undeniably worthy of an interested reader's time and attention." - Michael Compton, Fangoria

"Genuinely twisted and engrossing...may just leave you shaken for days." - Jessa Sobczuk, Rue Morgue [referring to Sunday Billy Sunday]

"This is muscular, original fiction that marks the debut of an exciting new voice in the speculative/dark fantasy genre." - Michael Rowe, editor of the Queer Fear anthology series and co-author of Triptych of Terror

"His tales are visceral, intellectual, and often grisly, but Wheaton never forgets that touch of humanity and wry humor which allow true horror to cut that much deeper to the bone." - Ken Plume, author, There's a Zombie In My Treehouse

"Wheaton's writing is haunting. Days, weeks, even months later, you will find your mind returning to his worlds. Stephen King is no longer my only addiction." - Todd Farmer, screenwriter, Drive Angry

"Mark Wheaton is a magician.  He misdirects you with accessibility while performing tricks of genius.  Don't try to figure out how he does it - just enjoy the show.  Four Nails in the Coffin is a shotgun blast to the brain. In a good way." - Gary Dauberman, screenwriter, Swamp Devil

Bones is a cadaver dog, one of the best. In the Apocalypse Saga he has to battle the undead and plants, a rat plague and domesticated dogs which became rabid. Separated, in 3 stories, and there is an additional short story about his past.

The author has written "Bones" from the dog's view, only sometimes the humans are telling their side of the story. Bones is loyal to humans and doing everything to rescue them, but he values his freedom and enjoys roaming the countryside without a soul in sight. He obeys a new handler easily and his most important goal is to protect humanity. After years of work and freedom he will return to his first home, whatever it takes.

I love dogs and really liked this story. Sometimes I had to cry because it was so touching to read his story. Even the supernatural elements were easy to believe and not too much out of this world. Reading the end of the second story chilled me, because Bones feels that his end is near, and during the story you will fear for his life. The end is very emotional (keep tissues close and don't read in in public).

To place the additional short story at the end was refreshing because you could once again get an insight into his life.

There were some minor errors in the book, nothing serious and nothing to disturb the story or my reading flow.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Amazing, simply amazing! Buy this book! 27. April 2012

After reading this book, I am compelled to stop reading zombie and end of the world books all together and I say this because the ending of this series is perfect. (Well, I will definitely still read end of the world books, but if there was a book to end them with, this is the one)

Bones is the story of the end of the world through three apocalypses and in the center of them all is Bones the loveable K-9 cadaver dog. Through his eyes (and snout) readers are walked through the destruction of man and are left wanting just a little bit more.

Where Bones succeeds and other stories fail is that there are no painfully boring chapters in which the protagonist hims and haws over the destruction of society, the quest for basic survival supplies in hostile wastelands, and there are thankfully only a few moments where the reader is locked in a room thinking, 'oh jeez how are we going to get out this time'. Well, to be fair, Bones has some of that but the author keeps the momentum going where I would say most stories fail to do so. Also, Bones the dog, doesn't worry about any of that. He is a dog and has very limited care for things that don't directly affect him in the present.

I wont give away the ending of the novel but I will say that it is the first end of the world story where I actually cried.

4.0 von 5 Sternen cool dog in a brutally disintegrating world....and really good writing 29. April 2012

i really enjoyed this book! although i may not have wanted to read a whole book about a dog, with very little paranormal content, or let's say, not nearly as much paranormal content as i thought there would be, the dog is a more interesting character than some human or supernatural ones in books i've read. but....i really wanted to read more about this amazing dog. i'll read anything that is interesting and well written, and this is both.

he's not speaking, mind you, and he's not paranormal in any way, but the descriptions of what the dog was thinking and how it interpreted what it saw was fascinating to me. the fierce loyalty and intelligence this dog showed really made me sadder than usual that i cannot have a pet (allergies). i certainly would love to have such a highly trained and protective spirit with me....the dog is quite a hero, but not in a cheesy, corny way.

the descriptions of the destroyed cities, cars, houses, the brutally clear descriptions of the violence in the stories, the gruesome descriptions of the human carnage, wounds and grim aftermath, were very well done. it's not just humans and dogs here, there's rats, birds and other dogs as well, acting, well, not as we usually think of them. the way the dog meets survivors and takes their side against the chaos is quite poignant.

in the first story, the science of how what happened to the world, and how it happened, was very well thought out, and i wish it could have been expanded- that idea is enough to fuel a big novel, and i kind of wish it had. loved the idea....too bad there was no attempt to show the media coverage at the moment of the's always is something i love to read- the t.v. reporter on the spot suddenly notices something's a classic sci-fi moment, and i felt the author had thought up a real doozy of an "end of the world" scenario. could have done a few scenes with the scientists at the lab....i feel there were a few missed opportunities here, for a bigger moment. i will be looking up this author's other books, this writer is now on my "must read" list.

this was a free book for me, and i have read quite a number of these free books, all of the supernatural/paranormal/fantasy/sci-fi variety. of the free or .99 cent books i have bought and read (quite a few!!), this author is a professional writer, perhaps unlike some of these other authors i have read....and it shows. the writing is really good, it's fun to read, it's excellently descriptive....nice for a change! no cardboard characters here, and most of all, a good story that keeps moving along, keeping you guessing. lots of enjoyment here. highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. As an animal lover, and an owner of a German Shepherd, I definitely connected with Bones. There were many times that even though I knew there were further stories with Bones in them in the book, I was genuinely worried for Bones' safety.

**The editing in the third novella and the final short story get a little rough, so perhaps the author might go back and do another pass on them sometime. It didn't hugely impact my enjoyment of the stories, but it did jar me now and then.
