John Blofeld’s classic study traces the history of this most famous of all the bodhisattvas from her origins in India (as the male figure Avalokiteshvara) to Tibet, China, and beyond, along the way highlighting her close connection to other figures such as Tara and Amitabha. The account is full of charming stories of Blofeld’s encounters with Kuan Yin’s devotees during his journeys in China. The book also contains meditation and visualization techniques associated with the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and translations of poems and yogic texts devoted to her.

John Blofeld (1913–1987) was a world-renowned scholar and writer who devoted his life to the study of Eastern religion, especially Taoism and Buddhism.

Unaware of the subtitle ("The Mystical Tradition of Kuan Yin"), I originally bought this book thinking it was about the maha-bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. I was greatly disappointed when I first got the book, since it turns out that it concerns the female Chinese counterpart of Avalokitesvara, namely, Kuan Yin. I read it anyway. I'm glad I did. It is truly a wonderful, readable book, mostly about the author's travels and observations in Buddhist China in the 1930's, filled with personal anecdotes that reveal the deepest teachings of the Buddha.

This is an excellent book. It traces one man's journey for knowledge of the Bodhisattva Kuan Yin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. This is not a scholarly treatise, but instead a very accessable look at the various names that Kuan Yin is known by in a variety of cultures and the changes of understanding from one culture to the next down through the ages. This is a very sweet book for individuals who are drawn to Kuan Yin by any name

This is the classic Kwan Yin book in English.Very interesting historical information. When the author peeks out from behind his scholarly facade, the book really shines.
