Kurzbeschreibung

For fans of William Gibson, Phillip K. Dick, and Jak Koke…

Los Angeles: 2063

David Stalin was one of the best detectives in the business, running head-to-head with data-jackers, organ thieves, and the tech-enhanced gangs who ruled the shadowy streets of Los Angeles. He could do no wrong, until what seemed like an easy case got out of control, and left his wife dead among the abandoned ruins of old LA.

After four years of self-imposed retirement, David suddenly finds himself back on the job, struggling to unravel a crime far worse than murder. This time, he’s not the hunter. As he’s about to discover, the past isn’t finished with him yet.

“…a smart, action-packed mystery thriller set in a future reminiscent of Blade Runner. Edwards combines the mind-twisting surrealism of Philip K. Dick with the hard-boiled characters of Elmore Leonard. I can’t wait for the next one!” — JAK KOKE, Bestselling author of ‘THE EDGE OF CHAOS’ and ‘THE TERMINUS EXPERIMENT’

“Fresh and surprising at every turn, DOME CITY BLUES by Jeff Edwards delivers first-rate adventure, high-thrills, and a vision of the future that will keep you fascinated. With this book, my only advice is enjoy!” — GAYLE LYNDS, New York Times bestselling author of ‘THE BOOK OF SPIES’

“Take the intelligence of a Neal Stephenson novel, add a heaping helping of Richard K. Morgan kick-ass, fold in a cup or two of real world technical knowledge and an eye in the future, and then put the result in a noir dystopia bleak enough to make Philip K Dick and William Gibson shed a few tears. Bake at 2000 degrees. You now have an idea of what Jeff Edwards has in store for you in DOME CITY BLUES.” — PATRICK HEFFERNAN, Mysterious Galaxy Books

“Ex-private detective David Stalin inhabits a world you might not want to live in, but you definitely want to visit. Whether or not you’ll survive the trip is anybody’s guess... but you won’t stop flipping the pages until you’re done.” — JEFF MARIOTTE, Author of ‘THE BURNING SEASON,’ and ‘CITY UNDER THE SAND’

Sci-fi Noir 3. Mai 2012
Von Tghu Verd - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
The title notes "For fans of William Gibson & Phillip K. Dick" but I didn't really get that.

What I got was Richard Morgan's Takeshi Kovacs...and that's a whole lot better!

Edwards' gritty PI, David Stalin, has that same exterior sheen of emotional teflon, but every other paragraph exposes a deeply concerned soul who's self-imposed limitations must be overcome before he can vanquish the bad guys, rescue the damsel in distress and generally save the Universe, one grubby piece at a time.

"Dome City Blues" posits a future view of a fracturing Humanity generally nose deep in our filth (environmental and spiritual) with the domed Los Angeles as the petri dish of all that has failed in our wasteful society. The only redeeming features on this landscape are the characters themselves - well some of them, anyway - as Stalin lurches from crisis to crisis amidst laser guided holographic porn and the sleazy, seedy underbelly of his wheezing, digitally connected city.

Slowly, and at great personal risk, Stalin works the whodunnit the underpins the plot, racking up personal credits with a host of sideways oddities while he ducks and dodges police and a super-smart killer both.

There is a smattering of military hardware, but the real technology is cybernetic as in man-machine interfaces that involve computer circuitry peeking out of your skull. Oh and lots of AIs, both as background noise running things such as your house and more ominously as dispassionate vanguards of their own post-Human future.

If you like this type of thing, I can't see how you'd be disappointed in "Dome City Blues". It's Morgan in style, with hints of Peter F. Hamilton's Greg Mandel and lineage from the master himself, Dashiell Hammett.

A great read and highly recommended.

Gritty Urban SciFi Private Eye 13. Januar 2012
Von W. Bentrim - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Dome City Blues by Jeff Edwards

John Edwards generally writes military fiction. Dome City Blues is his first entry into science fiction. In a ruined earth people of the population lives in Domes to protect themselves from the environment that they have ruined. A grieving former private detective rediscovers his life.

My only hope is that Jeff Edwards continues to write science fiction. I consider this a stellar first effort. His character, David Stalin, was developed as an eminently likable human being with demonstratable flaws. His hopes and fears were realistic and generated an empathetic read.

Edwards did an excellent job or training dystopian future dominated by corporations. When David left the domes you could almost feel the itch in your throat and burning your eyes from the polluted atmosphere.

The plot was intricate and complex without being confusing. Edwards did a great job in masking the true villain and keeping your interest until the end of the story. There's plenty of action and in some cases depraved morality but the protagonist demonstrates positive morals and ethics.

I certainly hope this won't be the last science fiction we see from Jeff Edwards because I are truly enjoyed it.

I highly recommend it.

A good read, but too futuristic for my tastes 15. Oktober 2011

I'm not into futuristic tales, and this one definitely is. But I still got into the storyline and characters as Jeff Edwards can spin a good story.
I bought this book because I really enjoyed his other books, Sea of Shadows and The Seventh Angel. I think he should stick to what he does best, military thrillers. There are plenty of potential bad guys to write about.
