Kurzbeschreibung
Harry Crewe is an orphan girl who comes to live in Damar, the desert country shared by the Homelanders and the secretive, magical Hillfolk. Her life is quiet and ordinary-until the night she is kidnapped by Corlath, the Hillfolk King, who takes her deep into the desert. She does not know the Hillfolk language; she does not know why she has been chosen. But Corlath does. Harry is to be trained in the arts of war until she is a match for any of his men. Does she have the courage to accept her true fate?
Synopsis
Harry, bored with her sheltered life in the remote orange-growing colony of Daria, discovers magic in herself when she is kidnapped by a native king with mysterious powers.

I am not a fan of science fiction, but this story is completely amazing! Having first read The Hero and the Crown in 7th grade, I had already liked Robin McKinley's writing style. But I was completely unprepared for this book when I read it a year later. It's now been 12 years since then and I have never forgotten it. It tells the story of this young girl, Harry, who feels like if she is missing something in her life. Now the first 3 chapters are a little slow but then, enters Corlath, golden-eyed king of Damar. Here is where the action begins. He possesses unusual powers of the mind and one look at Harry makes him realize she is the one who can wield the Blue Sword whose power is needed to save his country. So he kidnaps her and there begins an adventurous tale across a desert and mountains containing fight scenes, comedy, a magic sword, and a dash of romance. I completely got sucked into this imaginary world. It's a page turner, you won't put down. Never have I come across a book like this one and have been hoping all these years for a third part to continue the heroine tales of Damar. Tattered and with loose pages, I still read my poor book whenever I get a chance.

This book and another book by this author, "Beauty," are among the most satisfying modern fiction books I have ever read. I have read both many times with undiminished pleasure, and I have given them to close friends and family with gratifying results. Strangely, these are excellent as young adult books--especially for girls--but are also superb reading for an adult. Besides telling irresistable stories, they share an underlying conviction that daring and commitment can prevail without sacrificing human warmth and integrity. When I am feeling a bit battered by events, these are among the books I can pull out to refresh myself.

This was an amazing book. It's way up there in my top ten! The plot, story, characters seem to come alive as you turn the pages in this book. My friend and I first came found this book in a book recommending books for teens. At first I looked at the cover and thought, I don't want to read this, it's probably some corny fantasy. I'm glad I did read it.
Harry, an awkward girl, longing for something, some adventure away from her boring life after her father's death, finds herself kidnapped. This book brings her through trials and tribulations, adapting to a new way of life, discovering parts of herself she never realized were there before. After I finished this book, which I reluctently put down.( I even read slower so I wouldn't finish to soon ) I starting reading 'Hero and the Crown'. ( The book that first recommended these books said that 'The Blue Sword' should be read first, I agree.) I didn't want to start the Hero and the Crown. ! I wanted to read more about those characters and that time period, but now that I've read both, I think I liked 'Hero and the Crown' more.
Robin McKinley is a great writer, amazing... I thank her for this book and to anyone who reads the review, I highly recommend these books.
