Sequel to Hell & High Water
THIRDS: Book Two

When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order’s propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there’s a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.

Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order’s intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he’d left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.

I liked this better than book one, probably because I was more prepared and knew what I was in for. It better fit my expectations, but it's still not topping my favourites list.

It's fairly well written. I kind of thoughts names were occasionally used a little too often to be natural, but didn't think this was a pervasive issue. It just cropped up now and again. So, I basically have no real complaints about the writing. I don't remember any big copy edit problems. So, I don't really have any issue with that either.

It's just that the whole thing brings out the 'meh' in me. Nothing strikes me as deplorable, but nothing makes me fall in love either. The closest the book comes to really piquing my ongoing interest is Ash and Cael's possible relationship. Dex & Slone: I'm kinda done.

I feel as if the whole thing is like a high school class clown, who's funny, but obviously trying so hard to be funny that you kinda laugh at him as much as with him and it's just a little sad. Dex's antics are over the top, everyone loves him (and really, who's loved by everyone), he's too good at his job, too loyal, too funny, too clever, etc. He's too much.

Sloane, sexy as he is, grated on my nerves. He's so in his head and so overly dramatic that I basically stopped caring about him. Plus, I thought poor Ash got ignored. I mean, going back to the facility was as bad for him as Sloane, but he gets no screen time for it.

Then there is the percentage of gays in the THIRDS. Now, don't get me wrong, I read mm romance because I love them and I'm thrilled to know Calvin & Hobbs are working their thing out, Ash & Cael might finally get together, Letty is happy with her long-term girlfriend (or is it Rosa, those women are so secondary, cliché and interchangeable I can't be sure at this point), Hudson is still pining over Hobb's brother (and Vice versa), Taylor would love a go at Dex, etc. There appears to be one straight woman in the whole book...well and Maddox. And while individually each is hot in its own way, unless there is some reason for it, it starts to get redundant after a while.

<Don't read this paragraph if you're squeamish about sex talk.>If I am really honest, I also happened to think the sex in this one is redundant too. It is just all same-same. I know it seems to be a popular trend these days to cum in the mouth (at least in books, I don't know about RL), I'm not really bothered by the act itself, but over and over to the exclusion of almost everything else? No thank you, especially when the tone trying to be set is making love as opposed to just f- -ing. More meh.

I also thought that the ending was anticlimactic. There was all this build-up and then just wham, we're done. Yes, I get that this was supposed to be indicative of how much of a surprise it was to the leader of the Organisation too, but I felt cheated. Speaking of cheated, am I the only one who would have liked a little shifting in their shifter book? I wanted to see some big cat badass action, but it was not to be.

Anyhow, for a middle of the road, fun but not stellar read this one will do. I'd be happy to read more of Cochet's reading, but she's not on auto-buy yet.

Von Attention Is Arbitrary M/M Book Reviews - Veröffentlicht auf

Dex is more Dex.
Ash is more Ash.
Sloane is just f'ed up.
Oh, and Cash!

Charlie Cochet is a trickster! She's lured me into this world with gifts of humor and charming characters, and then she's waylaid me with unexpected anguish. In other words, I love it!

""Sloane could see Dex going into "detective mode" every time he opened a file. It made him once again question whether Dex would be happier in Recon.""

Sloane Brodie - As Team Leader, Sloane has to keep everyone safe, but ghosts from his past test his strength and resolve. Sloane broken is crushing.

""Wherever his team went, Dex seemed to pick up a fan following. Something about the guy fascinated Humans and Therians alike. Sloane was still trying to work out what it was. Especially since the guy was...well, kinda weird. Then again, crazy had a way of attracting crazy.""

Dexter J. Daley (Dex) - No one can push Sloane's buttons like Dex. Even when he's done something right, he's causing friction. Dex in action is thrilling though.

""For all the THIRDS' rules on fraternizing, the place was incestuous.""

Special Mention - Cael & Ash, Calvin & Hobbs. Or - Cash and Cobbs - respectively.

As the chase for bad-guy Issac continues, Dex makes a hero maneuver against orders that really pisses Sloane off. But why? It was the right thing to do. Sloane decides to be hard headed, Dex decides to keep his head down, and the rest of the world explodes around them.

"Karaoke night!"

The bro-hijinks in this story help to level out the heavier, harder hitting dark parts. I don't think Charlie Cochet can really ever write the "dark" stuff (she's just too kind), but she definitely paints an edgy, seedy picture showing how bad the ugly parts of society can be.

I'm impressed with the balance and contrast achieved here. If you look you'll see that Cochet has created a world parallel to ours in which bigots are Therian (shifter) haters and it brings into high-def just how ugly that sort of hatred really is.

I knew going into this series that it was supposed to have humor, but I wasn't really sure that Charlie Cochet could pull it off to the level that was hyped. My apologies to Charlie; she has certainly surprised me. Why did I have any doubts? I've always found a certain delight in reading her works. She always brings wonder, excitement and brightness. But this time, she has slammed me with her humorous wit.

In my (rushed) review of book 1, here, I mentioned the monumental world building that was done to give this series a huge presence. In book 2 I think that detail was given over to the development of the characters, Sloane in particular. Yippee for me, 'cus I'm a Sloane girl. The focus has not really been on the shifting, but rather on personalities and struggles and intriguing characteristics.

I think you'll find you'll be hooked by the humor, but will want to stay for the characters' charms. I know I will.

I would like to thank Charlie Cochet and Dreamspinner Press for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

I was so excited (and impatient) to get my grubby little reviewer hands on this book after reviewing the first one in the series and let me tell you it did not disappoint!!! Dex, Sloane and the team are fast becoming my favourite characters – well maybe not Ash quite so much, the jury is still out on that one.

The Order of Adrasteia are becoming more prominent and are set on wreaking havoc across the city without any thought or concern for loss of life. Their aim is to rid the world of Therian’s and cause as much death and destruction as possible. The backlash to this plan is that a rogue group of Therian’s have emerged to fight back making the THIRD’s job even more difficult.

It seems as though Team Destructive Alpha are thwarted at every turn and are always one step behind. Sloane is having nightmares and is starting to believe that whatever is going on is tied to his childhood as a first Gen somehow. The clues keep appearing but the team are just not quite quick enough to stop the threats.

When a Therian Youth Centre is targeted secrets start to spill and Sloane finds himself spiralling out of control. It seems not even Dex can help him. Sloane is too ashamed to trust the man he is falling in love with and Dex is getting to a point where he feels he may have to walk away for his own sanity.

This book delves into Sloane’s past and helps explain more about how he has become the man he is today. There is a very tender love story going on behind all the hatred and mayhem and Sloane is going to have to man up and trust a lover if he is going to keep hold of Dex and have any future with him.

As in the first book the secondary characters are crucial and there is a lot going on with other members of the team. Ash is his usual pain in the ass self but you have to wonder again what his feelings are towards Cael. What about Calvin and Hobbs? There is so much opportunity for more, more and then some more with this series!!

Charlie Cochet has added another brilliant book to this new series and I am biting my nails waiting for Rack & Ruin. This series is exciting, well written and addictive! In the meantime if you want to keep up on the gossip about my favourite boys there is a THIRD’s Nerds discussion group on Goodreads 

Nothing makes me happier than to read a sequel that is just as outstanding and exactly what I was hoping for. Nothing makes me more content than to start the next book in a series and fall easily into where I left off in the previous book. It is just so freaking perfect when that sequel follows the natural progression in the professional and personal partnership of these two men who are on the path to one of the finest happily-ever-after’s ever!!!! Blood & Thunder is all that, and lots more; so much more, and once again, I’m left eagerly awaiting the THIRDS book.

Sloane and Dex have now been together, both professionally and personally, for many months and both relationships have grown and, for the most part, solidified. Well, professionally, much more so than personally, but still, the advancements they’ve made are incredible. Professionally, Dex is the best thing since sliced bread, given that the entire team is completely infatuated with him…with the exception of Ash, of course. Poor Ash, he just doesn’t get the awesomeness that is Dexter Daley.

Sloane is altogether another story. He is struggling with what he feels for Dex, struggling to put a name to it, struggling for where he wants their “relationship” to go, and struggling to just get past Gabe and his own history. In short, Sloane is a mess. It was hard to see him struggle so, but it was necessary to get to his history.

Dex is still the funniest man I’ve read about in a long time. His humor and outlook on life are like a huge ball of sunshine wrapped in cheese doodles. No wonder the entire team in infatuated with him. But all is not perfect, and Dex is quietly feeling the heartache of not knowing where he stands with Sloane, and it’s starting to take its toll. I know there are more books in this series, and nothing is expected to be completely resolved, but I was still very happy with how things ended.

This was a great installment to the THIRDS series. The amazing characterization of all the secondary characters allowed me to feel a connection to them, as if I already know the entire team personally. I am beginning to warm up to Ash, a little bit, and I even understand him some, but I hope that he doesn’t break Cael’s heart. I know they belong together, I just hope they figure it out as well. I am also looking forward to delving deeper in to the Calvin and Hobbs (Ethan) relationship. Loved Ethan’s brothers; loved them so hard. I’m hoping that they play a more prominent role in the coming books, as well.

So, yep, it’s true, this series is everything I knew it was going to be, and I have no doubts that the entire series will maintain that same success. Check it out people; this is an amazing read and one that comes highly recommended.
5.0 von 5 Sternen “Man, this team is incestuous.” :-) 4. August 2014

If Hell & High Water is about the humor and introducing us to the THIRDS universe, than Blood & Thunder is about unleashing the feels and entrenching us even further into the dynamic THIRDS universe. Don’t worry there are still plenty of classic Dex moments *cough*Dex and a vacuum cleaner*cough*. But I did find myself fighting back tears at a few different points within the book and not because I was laughing so hard, but because the moment or the scene was unleashing intense amounts of feels.

Blood & Thunder follows in Hell & High Water’s footsteps in finding a perfect way to balance a well-developed and action-packed plot with just the right amount of romance interweaved throughout the story. Isaac Pearce and his Order of Adrasteia is the focus of the plot for Blood & Thunder, with all of Destructive Delta determined to capture him dead or alive. In addition to the continued threat of Isaac Pearce and his Order the THIRDS agency is also dealing with another threat. A group of Therians specifically targeting the Order of Adrasteia members, at first glance the Therian group comes across as more of nuisance. But things are definitely far more complicated when it comes to this group of Therians.

“Man, this team is incestuous.”

Dex and Sloane: Their journey within Blood & Thunder is very bumpy, particularly for Sloane and his own personal demons. In the end they come out stronger as a couple, but the path they take to reach said ending is filled with lots of obstacles. Despite all the obstacles they encountered their sexy times continue to be smokin’ hot! And Dom Sloane…let’s just say you won’t escape the scene unscathed and you’ll definitely be wanting/begging for more. :-)

Hudson & Sebastian (aka Heb): I want their story!!! I need their story!!!

Ash & Cael (aka Cash): A bit of Cael’s history is revealed and said history is going to make the entire fandom want to curl protectively around him. Overall, you’ll be satisfied with what you do get, but still clamoring for more and anxiously counting down the days for the release of Cash’s book.

Calvin & Hobbs (aka Cobbs): A few of your questions will be answered regarding these two. But you’ll probably end up having just as many if not more questions before reading Blood & Thunder. The only thing I do have to say is that I’m very excited for their story and can’t wait to get my hands on it.

Overall, Blood & Thunder was an enjoyable read filled with classic Dex moments, feels, sexy times, and action. It did an amazing job of keeping my attention and setting up perfectly for the next book in the series. The only drawback is that I now have to wait until November for Rack & Ruin and patience is not exactly my virtue. :-)
