Kurzbeschreibung

When thirteen-year-old Ronan Truelove’s seemingly ordinary mom snatches him from school, then sets off on a high speed car chase, Ronan is shocked. His quiet, nerdy dad has been kidnapped? And the kidnappers are after him, too?

His mom, he quickly learns, is anything but ordinary. In fact, she’s a member of an ancient order of knights, the Blood Guard, a sword-wielding secret society sworn to protect the Pure—thirty-six noble souls whose safety is crucial if the world as we know it is to survive.

Now all those after-school activities—gymnastics, judo, survival training—she made him take, make sense. For suddenly Ronan is swept up in a sometimes funny, sometimes scary, but always thrilling adventure—dashing from one danger to the next, using his wits to escape the Bend Sinister, a posse of evil doers with strange powers. Falling in with two unlikely companions, Greta, a scrappy, strong-willed girl he’s never much liked and Jack, a devil-may-care teenage pickpocket, Ronan is left with only his wits and his mom’s last words of advice: Trust no one.

That’s a lot for an ordinary kid to deal with. But then again, maybe Ronan’s not ordinary at all.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good fun, from the first page to the last 28. Januar 2014

Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
This book (which is #1 of a trilogy) is non-stop action throughout. The characters are engaging and are often in fish-out-of-water situations. There is magic, evil and purposeful quest throughout the book. It is very easy to read this book in one sitting. What makes this book suitable for middle school and YA readers? Clean, non-complex plot lines, charming characters, youthful protagonists and lots of action. There are good adults and bad, loving parents and neglectful.

This book is a cheerful page turner for anyone, any age who likes action and plot. I found it well written. The author has a nice ear for dialogue. Even though this is part of a series, I felt the book did a nice job of standing alone as a work.

5.0 von 5 Sternen My 12 year old LOVED it & wrote his own review! 5. März 2014
Von Donna - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I received a finished copy of Blood Guard from the publisher for review. As soon as I opened this package and saw this fantastic cover, I knew that Blood Guard was a book for my 12 year old son, Damian. And I was right, he LOVED it! So much so that he’s already loaned it to his friend to read and he's recommended it to his middle school librarian as something he’d like to see on the NC Battle of the Books list next year. He was a little unsure about how to put together a review so I made him a kind of worksheet or template with questions for him to answer. He did a great job!

Also, Any book that can inspire THIS kind of enthusiastic reaction from my son deserves nothing less than a 5 star rating and the highest recommendation from me!

Damian’s review:

Blood Guard was wicked cool! It was full of action and adventure and plenty of surprises. The main characters were Ronan, Greta, and Dawkins. My favorite character was Dawkins because if you killed him, he would come back to life! How awesome is that? Ronan wants to become a Blood Guard so that he can help to protect the Pures but he has a hard time becoming part of that society. The Pures were special people who were super important to the world or could trigger major events.

The bad guys were trying to get rid of the Pures. They had this thing they could look through and tell if someone was Pure. The Blood Guards had something like that too so they knew who to protect. I was so mad at the bad guys but I can’t say why because it would be a spoiler.

I can’t think of any other books, TV shows, or movies that was anything like this. That’s one of the reasons I loved it so much, it wasn’t like anything else! The fantasy world is pretty much like our world but with a lot of things that our world don’t have. I wouldn’t want to live there but I wish I could have been there when the Blood Guard infiltrated the enemy base! I would have fought right beside them to protect the Pures!

I would definitely recommend Blood Guard to other people. This book was so good, I couldn’t put it down! I read it EVERYWHERE. I read it at home. I read it at school. I read it between classes while walking through the halls (and even ran into people or walls once or twice). I read it on the school bus, at breakfast and at lunch. I took this book with me everywhere I went until I finally finished it.

If I could say one thing to the author, I would say send me the next book already!! If I could say one thing to a parent thinking about buying this book I would say to get it. If your kid likes adventure and excitement, your kid will love Blood Guard! I keep trying to tell my mom to read it because I think she would like it too.

4.0 von 5 Sternen My 10 year old liked it 1. März 2014

(written by a 10 year old boy) I would recommend this book to people my age (10). Very interesting. It's about a boy who's mother is a member of the Blood Guard and gets captured, and he and his friends he meets along the way have to go and rescue her. And he needs to figure out the mystery of his missing dad. The only thing I didn't really like is it left off as a cliffhanger. But overall, it was pretty good.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Adventurous debut of the trilogy 27. Februar 2014
Von Wixby Bonnet - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
Blood Guard is a very exciting book for young readers interested in adventure stories with a touch of science fiction. The story is about Ronan, whose mother has had him enrolled in all sorts classes that teach strength, agility and self-defense. He never understood why until he must go on the run. He learns that his mother is part of the Blood Guard that protect the 36 Pure who keep the world, as people know it, safe. It falls upon Ronan to discover all he can about the Blood Guard and use his skills to save his parents and more.

The book is action-packed. It really moves quickly. The story is interesting and easy to follow once you understand what the Blood Guard is. The chapters are fairly short with appropriate language. It’s very manageable for young readers around nine or ten years old, but interesting for young teens too. My son enjoyed the book and I thought it was a very good start to the trilogy. We’re eagerly anticipating the next book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen More Than the Sum of Its Parts 4. März 2014
Von Pop Bop - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is awash in most of the conventions of middle grade fantasy/adventure, but each part is just a little bit better than the usual, and it all fits together so nicely that the overall effect is remarkably engaging.

Ronan's father is kidnapped, and just before Ronan's Mom drops him off at a train headed for D.C. she reveals that she is a knight of the Blood Guard and Ronan is destined to be a knight as well. The Blood Guard is sworn to defend "the Pure", 36 noble souls whose existence is what keeps Earth harmonious, peaceful and good. When the "Bend Sinister" assassinates a Pure the Earth drifts into disarray and conflict until a new Pure arises. So, you get a good/evil battle that turns on protecting/harming the 36, (who by the way are not aware of the role they play). There's a little more setup, but that's the basic idea.

The book starts with Ronan and his Mom being attacked, Mom disappearing after a battle, and a deeply disoriented Ronan trying to make his way to Washington on his own. On the way he picks up a sarcastic female sidekick, a goofy/mysterious guide, others helpers and multiple enemies. He has to figure out what the deal is with the Blood Guard, whom he can trust, where his parents are, how he fits into the story, and what his next move is. So, you get the whole innocent in danger who has to figure out the action and make the right moves package. (It's similar in a general way to Hitchcock's "North By Northwest" and has the same sort of "winging it amateur in danger" vibe.)

I'm skipping over some cool plot details, excellent action, nicely paced chase and escape scenes, and the like, because while they are all well done they aren't the stars of this piece. The star is Ronan as a likeable, relatable, reluctant action hero. He is smart, funny, observant and pretty insightful. He does a convincing job of resisting and then coming to grips with his incredible situation. His exchanges with Greta, the girl who gets caught up in the adventure, are priceless examples of deadpan humor and middle grade cluelessness. His growth as the adventure continues is satisfying and is as believable as can be, given the plot.

This is not one of those "junior James Bond" books or "I'm-an-8-year-old-secret-agent" books. It's also not a hyper-real "Hunger Games" type book. It is in the happy middle - it has a clever premise, action, some laughs, engaging characters, no overt bloodshed but lots of peril, and a certain shaggy sort of charm. A very happy find.

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.
