*Starred Review* Thompson's graphic novel debut, Goodbye Chunky Rice (1999), was a delicate parable of loss that garnered deserved acclaim. The eagerly awaited, autobiographical follow-up to it is more ambitious, more accomplished, and more accessible. Thompson recalls growing up in a religious family in rural Wisconsin, particularly his affectionate tussles with his younger brother, with whom he shared a bed and the titular blankets. A few years later, he experiences the painful intensity of first love with Raina, a girl from Michigan he meets at a regional church camp. When the pair are separated, his loss of faith in his love for Raina presages his later loss of religious faith. The blanket motif reappears throughout the work, forthrightly as the handmade quilt Raina gives him, and more subtly as the blank sheets of paper he confronts as a budding artist. Eschewing the usual alt-comics cynicism, Thompson's evocation of high-school romance manages to be both romanticized and clear-eyed. His visual mastery shows in fluid line work, assured compositions, and powerful use of solid black areas and negative space. Weighing in at nearly 600 pages, this is a genuine graphic novel, with a universal appeal that suits it for any collection. Gordon Flagg

Adult/High School-Thompson's Good-bye, Chunkie Rice (Top Shelf, 1999) offered readers well-realized but fantastic characters in a tale that nicely combined sentiment with adventure. This second, much longer work shares the acuity for character development and dynamic sensitivity that makes the author so compulsively readable. In Blankets, however, realism reigns supreme in both the story arc and in the humanity of its characters. Thompson himself is the protagonist, and this is his tale of growing up, falling in love (and realizing the physical and moral complications that can imply), discovering the texture and limits of his faith, and arriving at a point from which he can look back at those experiences. The snowy Midwest, peopled by overweight parents, hairy youths, and lovingly depicted younger siblings-including a respectfully and realistically treated minor character with Down syndrome-is energetically realized in Thompson's expressive lines and inking. Much of the story occurs when Craig and his brother Phil are young boys and includes images of such boyish pranks as peeing on one another. Older high school students who have reached an age when nostalgia is possible will warm to Thompson's own wistfulness. When I finally got my hands on a copy of "Blankets", I was very curious whether this critically praised "illustrated novel" was really worth the small fortune I had paid for it. And, what can I say? It simply left me stunned. Rarely have I read a comic book that not only manages to connect such beautiful drawings with a story this tender and yet utterly gripping, but also incorporates the painful strains of growing up, first love and fundamentalist religious beliefs. In fact, even "real" novels (i.e. the ones without pictures) ;-) often fall short of the great narrative skills of Craig Thompson. The landscapes perfectly reflect the emotions and phantastic dreams and horrors of the protagonist and likewise undermine his artistic ambition, melting words and pictures into an unseparable unity - a beautiful tapestry spread over almost 600 pages. Interestingly enough, the story is not told chronologically, but rather in a jumble of associations: the chronological coming of age storyline is repeatedly intercut by flashbacks into Craig's past. On the one hand, this allows the reader to learn more about his upbringing, but also shows a lot about the important relationship with his brother Phil, his love of drawing or the several layers of shame that has been planted within him.
I read the entire book in one sitting, and it really left me thinking, mostly about the cruelties that people can do to each other, and how such a rigid fundamentalist upbringing can scar a person for life, but also about the beauty of the world and love. It's a bitter sweet story, and yet it never simplifies matters: there's no ultimate message that proclaims the inexistence of God. Rather, faith in God remains, but the protagonist (and the author as well) are finally emancipated from the strict teaching of their former church.

The story told is nothing too extraordinary, but the way Thompson has rendered it in this graphic novel makes it especially touching. The drawings are full of imagination and work well to express the narrator's mood. They are credible when it comes to his fears as a kid and the idealization of his girl-friend. Yes, some might consider them bordering on the kitschy or even crossing that line, but to me they helped to illustrate the naive view which a teenager might have of his first love.
One thing I would like to point out is Thompson's work with sound. There are some instances he manages to create rhythm through his drawings, and when I saw the drummer and his sticks, I almost heard him start the beat.
Thompson's dealing with fundamentalist Christianity also merits special mention. It takes up a great part of the book, as it did in his life as a kid, and I find it remarkable how he manages to convey his ambiguous stance towards it, and his slow move away from it.

DieComing-of Age Story ist herzergreifend, unglaublich real und traumhaft (in jeder Bedeutung dieses Wortes) inszeniert bzw gezeichnet. Man muss sich Zeit und Muße für BLANKETS nehmen und darf nicht durch die Handlung toben. Die Bilder in schwarz-weiß müssen wirken, müssen nachhallen, haben eine ungeheure Poesie und Kraft. Die Sprache ebenso. Verknüpft mit Religionskritik, Liebesdramen und dem üblichen Wahnsinn des Erwachsenwerdens und Sichselbstfindens! Hier stimmt alles! Für mich der beste Comic des letzten Jahrzehnts! Unfassbar gut!!!
