A childhood of abuse has left Avery so physically and emotionally scarred he believes he shouldn't be alive. His only sanctuary has been his relationship with his older foster brother Sam. Avery finally lets Sam convince him to start therapy to help overcome his crippling anxiety, but even that can't prepare him for the upheaval caused by meeting Noah Yates.

Noah is everything Avery fears. He's large and physically powerful—and undeniably capable of destroying Avery's hard-earned progress. Although Noah seems to have a tender streak when it comes to him, Avery is terrified of being victimized again. But no matter how many times he tries to push him away, Noah never goes far.

Noah wants to save Avery, but can he be the catalyst Avery needs to begin the journey out of the blackness?

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Carter Quinn was born and raised in a very small Western Kansas town where cattle vastly outnumber humans. Because he’s contrary by nature, upon graduating high school, he went East, young man, hoping to find more people like him (shh: the gays!). After stints living in places as different as Omaha, Nebraska, and Ft Lauderdale, Florida, he settled in Lawrence, Kansas, and attended the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk!). Although he still bleeds (Crimson and) Blue, Carter recently relocated to Colorado where he can be closer to his beloved Colorado Avalanche. He is the paw-picked human companion of the sweetest dog on the planet, a Beagle-surprise mix named Yashe.

I've read a lot of gay books already, but this one really made it to my heart. It's about this wonderful turn in Avery's life grateful to Sam and Noah. Heart-touching and something I won't forget! Worth every minute of reading. Even though, with all it's sadness, it is indeed funny as well. There are a lot of giggle-moments.

Avery, who was abused first by his mother, stepdad and stepbrothers, then by the taller boys in foster care and recently he was beaten up by one of these boys all grown up now. So no wonder he considers himself as the punching-bag of the univers, doesn't have any self-esteem at all and is afraid all the time, mostly of men especially tall men.
Noah, broad-shoulderd and oh so tall, meets shy Avery and wants to be friends with this cute, little man, who bashfully and frightened tries to avoid him.
Noah is not only intelligent, but stubborn. He doesn't give up and slowly gets Avery to trust him. But more than friendship is impossible for a man like Avery, isn't it?

The slow development of their friendship, the description of Avery's fears, his inner monologues are really heart-warming. It's wonderful to see how Noah just understands how to treat Avery. And Avery's friends are lovely, too, though Avery himself isn't quite sure if they are his friends - the reader knows.

A wonderful story of a young man with lots of problems who slowly regains control of his life and accepts that he is not only worth to live, but to be happy.

A very good read, deeply touching, this book deals with subject matter that i usually avoid. The protag, Avery, has suffered abuse most of his life, and we meet him when he is 23, a broken person. He's dealing with the aftermath every second of every day, but he's fortunate to have good friends, and also a new gently insistant friend, Noah, friends that he can trust despite everything, and who help him in his struggle for a normal life.
I started reading it, and just could not let go of the book. It's tough, harsh, but also sweet and sensuous. If you're looking for a predictable m/m romance, this book is not that. It is so much more though. The writing is good, things evolve at a realistic pace, no easy, out of the blue, solutions here. Every setback, every flashback makes one's heart ache for Avery, every small step in the right direction makes one cheer madly with hopeful joy. I'm looking forward to reading more by Carter Quinn.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Painful But Wonderful Story 17. Juli 2013
Von ChinaBlue - Veröffentlicht auf

Wow, I've been on a real roll lately - reading about broken minds and/or bodies but this one was so painful I almost quit reading. Actually, at first I thought that the abuse suffered by a young boy was way too over-the-top to be believable, but then I remembered some of the stuff I have read on the Internet over the past few years and accepted that there are indeed monsters who walk this world and so I soldiered on.

This is the story of a gentle giant, Noah, who with patience, understanding and love, helps Avery emerge from the blackness of his childhood. Nothing "insta" here at all - the story, the process, and the love take place over many months; it is a journey well worth reading.

Noah, at first, seems too good to be true, but given that he is a psychology major, it doesn't take a great leap of faith to accept his knowledge and manner of dealing with Avery about whom, given his history of childhood horror and abuse, one must wonder how he manages to even function at all in the world. In addition to Noah, Avery is surrounded by a small, select group of people - the Gossip Group - who befriend him and try to help him deal and heal in an otherwise heretofore friendless world.

The writing is flawed at times, with occasional misspellings, extraneous words and some awkward sentence structure that had me rereading to comprehend its meaning, but not so overt as to spoil the beauty of the story. The supporting characters - Sam in particular (an "adopted" big brother) - sometimes seem unbelievably insightful but they are a great bunch of people and help the story move along.

All in all - not a book for everyone but certainly an exceptionally good read if you do. If you are looking for a passionate tale replete with sex, however, this book is not for you.

This is my second book by this author and I look forward to much more of his work.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A touching, hope filled, painful, joyous journey of healing 12. Juli 2013
Von Aniko - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
I can't say enough how wonderful this book is. The story, the characters and the writing were all so beautifully created.

Avery is so broken when we first meet him, but even then, there is just something about him that is fighting to survive, that screams hope. He's endearing and sweet and funny and I just wanted to wrap him up and hug him and keep him safe. His journey out of the blackness was painful at times, but it was also an absolute joy. And Noah. Noah is the epitome of patience and understanding. He had his eye on the prize and the prize for him was Avery's love. Win!

All of the characters, both main and secondary, were layered and believable and full of personality. There were no miraculous fixes or cardboard cutout characters. There were no over the top perfect heroes or tortured heroes, either. What there was is a realistic approach to how quickly someone broken by a lifetime of abuse is going to heal and complex and diverse characters that felt like they were people you might know in real life.

The cover is amazing and fits the story perfectly. Its significance and just how beautiful it is, not only in composition, but also in meaning, and how it relates to Avery becomes apparent as Avery's story unfolds.

I totally fell in love with both Avery and Noah, but Avery is truly special and will be one character that will always own a little piece of my heart. This book; So much.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Brilliant, Difficult, But Profoundly Moving 28. Juli 2013
Von Alan Arthur Katz - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This book is an important one - so many of us, especially gays, have suffered abuse at the hands of our families, from physical abuse, to sexual abuse, to being forced into damaging "reparative" therapy, to bullying, and so much more.

In fact, it's a miracle that the LGBT political movement has become so strong, so fast. Or perhaps that's the reason - that we've grown tired and angry at endlessly being told we're worthless, or second-class citizens, or that we'll burn in hell for eternity for who we are.

So it is difficult to read about someone so scarred by years of parental and foster-care physical abuse, so terrified, feeling so worthless as to be regularly contemplating suicide. On the other hand, it is so wonderful to read about a man recapturing his soul, redeemed and freed by the love, gentleness and patience of a caring man.

As a child of abuse, I can testify that this author got it exactly right. The feelings of helplessness, fear, certainty of failure are all symptoms of this cruelest of crimes. I'm 66 years old, and yet I still battle some of the scars from my childhood, almost every day, so this book resonated, for me, in a very personal way.

And it is a well-written book. My only complaint is that the ending seemed too abrupt, as though the author just ran out of word count. The love in this book is really beautiful. It would have been even better to see it consummated, rather than just hinting that it might be about to happen.

Still, it is well worth the investment in both time and money. It moved me to tears more than once.

Von No angst just a great story - Veröffentlicht auf

Other reviewers have captured the plot well - (extremely disastrous childhood with abuse and then gets bashed again bringing it all back). But this is a very positive and loving story, I fell in love with Avery and Noah from the get go. And his adopted brothers Sam the two K's and Kira (Sam's girlfriend) just a wonderful ride. It is a nice length book and the beauty of it is that the last page leaves you smiling. Avery is awesome and you can see glimpses of how awesome he is all the way through. I enjoyed it - but if you are after hot man love you will not get it, if you are after a story of hope, patience and love then this is it.
