4.0 von 5 Sternen Enjoyable 4. Juni 2011
Von S. Blodgett - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I gave this a shot on a whim, I haven't read fantasy in awhile and the 99 cent price point was something I couldn't pass up.

It's an enjoyable read. It's not the most original piece of fiction I've ever read but in all fairness the entire genre is pretty much built around the templates set forth in LOTR so I don't begrudge Mr. Kunkel for following the trend.

Blackthorn is fast paced and exciting, I didn't find myself becoming bored as I usually do with far too many fantasy novels. He sticks to the plot and runs with it, sometimes to the detriment of the world-building but I can live with that. Some fantasy becomes so bogged down in it's lore that reading it becomes a chore rather than a pleasure.

Blackthorn doesn't reinvent the wheel but I got exactly what I wanted from it: a well written, fun story full of action, monsters and political intrigue. I'm eager to read the rest of the series. To me that's that's pretty high praise, it kept my interest and made me want more. Not bad for a novel that costs less than a cup of coffee.

1.0 von 5 Sternen needs major editing help 9. September 2011
Von Brian Chrisman - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This is by far the most poorly or completely unedited book I've seen on Amazon
If the editorial problems are addressed I will give it four stars and rewrite this review.
I kept a log of all the fragments and incorrect punctuation and started a discussion on the author's page, but I haven't received a response.
I highly recommend against this book until these issues are fixed.

In the author's page I cite examples of the problems.

There are errors on 95%+ of the pages, and I'm reading on my phone!

Update: I took a look at the 'sample' of the sequel to this book and the grammatical problems continue.

1.0 von 5 Sternen A LOT OF ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT 23. Dezember 2012
Von MLove - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

After reading this first installment, I do not think I'd be up to reading the second and third book of the trilogy. This book, despite the promise and potential of becoming an epic tale like The Lord of the Rings, has failed miserably. I'm titling my review as such because that's what this book has. To be honest, this book could be a 0-star for me, but I felt that the author has a good story to tell and he just needs to tell it better. I feel he needs a proofreader and editor to help him. At least to correct grammar, add missing articles, and correct word usage. Using 'drug' instead of 'dragged' is just unforgivable. It gave me a headache trying to make sense out of his sentences. If this book was written with proper proof-reading, I would have finished it in a day instead of 4.

Second reason why this is a 1-star is that I don't get why it's given the title Black Thorn. What's the relevance of Black Thorn to the first installment of the trilogy? I really don't know. I'm still trying to figure out how the title ties up to the story.

What I know about singular books in a series is that they have the capacity to stand-alone as a story. This leads me to my third reason for giving this a 1-star rating. I felt that this book lacks that stand-alone quality. Is it a story about the adventures of Cassius? Or is it a story about the life of Gaelan and Burcott? Majority of the story was about Cassius and yet it ended with Gaelan and Burcott. Now, I'm left confused with the intention of the author with this first installment.

A fourth reason is the fact that I felt the author was trying too hard to be J.R.R. Tolkien or Robert Jordan that he ended up with a mashed up story.

With all honesty, the only reason why I'd read the 2 other books would be to find out if this confusion would have an end. But, I don't think I'd like to risk having a bigger headache. This is the first time I was not awed by a fantasy novel. I'm a bit disappointed that my favorite genre have authors who do not write with care.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Where is the editing? 8. September 2011
Von seattle bibliofile - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This read more like a first draft than a final manuscript. I've never read a published work so chock full of grammatical errors. It felt as though the majority of every paragraph contained several sentences that were in desperate need of commas, combinations, or flat out removal. It was incredibly disruptive to the flow of an otherwise enjoyable story. I found my brain working more on correcting punctuation than on immersing myself in the plot. I can't say I'm looking forward to the second book in this series if it's as much work to read as this one was.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Better luck next time.. 19. September 2011
Von Stephen Berkeley - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I know I know! The editing sucks just like the others mentioned who read it before me. I had the feeling that it had been rushed because it sounds like it was still a draft! The grammar, spelling and punctuation are wrong in many parts and it was not even polished yet. The title might have been very inviting to read but trust me, headache will follow while reading this.
