Kurzbeschreibung

SOME SECRETS WON'T STAY BURIED WITH THE DEAD.
NOT EVEN UNDER A MOUNTAIN.

After 2 decades of shame that drove him into a whiskey bottle and left him a homeless, under-a-bridge drunk, Will Gribbins has come home to the mountains to face his past.

Will and his best friend, Lloyd, were the only 2 survivors...
...of the 1980 explosion that killed 27 Eastern Kentucky miners in the Harlan #7 coal mine and shattered countless other lives in the close-knit small town of Aintree Hollow. But the 2 young men escaped the mine that day with more than just their lives. Each carried secrets about another tragedy that occurred deep in the guts of the mountains after the explosion. Those secrets decimate the next 2 decades of their lives.

Will returns to the hollow for the first time in 20 years for the memorial service on the anniversary of the disaster--determined to confess what he did. The mountains are just as he left them; the people who live there are not.

Granny Sparrow’s grief has imprisoned her.

JoJo bears the invisible stamp of a family heritage that will kill her.

Jamey is … is what? How can Will explain the boy’s psychic ability? The magical statues he carves out of lumps of coal?

And Lloyd wants to kill him.

Will doesn’t realize that his arrival has unleashed powerful forces that will endanger the lives of another crew of miners digging coal in a mile-deep hole under Black Mountain. Only this time, the explosion that kills them won’t be an accident. This time, it will be murder.

Will doesn’t see the mounting danger, though. Or that Jamey and his pet mine canary, ValVleen, hold the key to it all.

When the unthinkable happens and the fate of innocent miners is again placed in Will's hands, can he summon the courage he lacked 2 decades ago? Is Will man enough now to save them--even if it means he must face the horror he's been running away from all these years?

Will he leave the miners behind, buried alive?

Or will he die with them, gasping for breath in the dark until there’s no air left?

READERS' PRAISE

  • Ninie Hammon does not just paint pictures with words, she takes you to the movies and hands you popcorn!! This is a vividly written, sensitive, psychological suspense novel about regret, redemption, foresight and overcoming, with a light touch of the Twilight Zone. Characters that are real enough to feel like relatives and connect with the soul deep in places you forgot existed. READ THIS BOOK!! Karen Pillay

  • This is not your typical mystery thrillers and suspense book; it’s not what you expect from paranormal books either, though the boy who carves coal statues is psychic. Black Sunshine is a kinder, gentler version of both genres, suspense that’s uplifting and inspirational. That’s rare in contemporary fiction.Cassandra

  • Hammon captures the voices of backwoods Kentucky with great skill and warmth. Her research adds depth to her novels. And in the end, she always twists and turns the plot, adds elements of mystery and suspense thrillers, leaves us with life lessons that feel as genuine as the characters. Bestselling author Eric Wilson, Top 100 Amazon Reviewer

  • The psychological suspense is gripping in this drama about a coal mine disaster. By psychological suspense, I mean the tension of trying to figure out the mystery…before the mine explodes again. Sarah Bridges

  • Who would have guessed my heart would break over a story about coal miners? Black Sunshine is contemporary fiction about a world as old as the mountains; inspirational suspense that gives you insight into people you never knew existed. (The psychic boy added a fascinating element of paranormal suspense; thrillers like this are why I read Ninie Hammon!) T. Fredrick

5.0 von 5 Sternen Welcome Home, Will, Thank You, Ninie! 19. März 2012
Von Wolfe Moffat - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
If there's one author who is always welcome in my home, that author would be Ninie Hammon. She comes up with something different through every story, whether a tornado is ready to hit, or a marijuana grower is almost out on his own luck, this girl gets your attention. And now she dares to take you into the depths of Kentucky coal mines. Welcome to Aintree Hollow.

But to Will Gribbins, just how warm of a welcome will he recieve in this town? He worked in the mines, and his memories are anything but warm and fuzzy. But don't you be telling Granny Sparrow that Will ain't got no place back home! He's more'n welcome, and she sees to it. Welcome home, Will! And oh, welcome back some memories, some treasured, some that Will would just rather forget. That's why he lived his life in a bourbon bottle for quite some time. Wouldn't ya know it? There's a kid living with Granny who reminds Will of Ricky Dan, and that reminder is Jamey Boy.

Seeing life through Jamey's eyes, and through his coal carvings, is breathtaking. And Will sees reminders of his own past in some of those precious carvings. Will Gribbons is back in mining country for a reason. Even if that reason might kill him.

Once again, we are introduced to characters that only Ninie Hammon could make come alive! And we're actually allowed to feel some emotion through these stories, you know. If you haven't read Ninie Hammon yet, I hope you don't wait for the opportunity any longer. She's a pleasure to read, and all I can say is thank you! Thanks, Ninie!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Secrets and Suspense 12. Dezember 2011
Von Eric Wilson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
A natural disaster. A family tragedy. And a horrific deception.

Ninie Hammon once again uses her storytelling prowess to unfold the drama of a small town in the mountains of Kentucky, where twenty years earlier an explosion killed 27 men working in the coal mines. Now, as the town commemorates that tragic event, the two survivors come toe to toe and face the dark truths of that day.

Will Gribbins is one of those survivors, a man who left Aintree Hollow and lost himself in the Navy and in the bottom of a bottle. In doing so, he broke an unspoken promise and left the other survivor, Lloyd, to deal with the guilt and the town's grief. The childhood friendship between these two men is put to the test when they confront each other after two decades. Both harbor secrets. Both wish to remedy the past in their own ways. As their fateful choices lead to a deadly final encounter deep in Black Mountain, there is only one person capable of mining their secrets for the family to see. This person is a mentally challenged young man named Jamey Boy, a teenager who carves images from jet-black coal, images that are prescient and prophetic. Jamey Boy has no idea that his art will peel back layers of deception, and no idea that he too will be forced to make a fateful choice.

I've read two novels based in the world of modern American mining, "Black Sunshine" and Dale Cramer's "Bad Ground." Both are on my list of favorite books. Both take time digging deep into the characters and settings, but churn up incredible things for those patient enough to discover treasure. Hammon captures the voices of backwoods Kentucky with great skill and warmth. Her research adds so much depth to her novels, without becoming burdensome. And in the end, she always twists and turns the plot, adds elements of mystery and suspense, and leaves us with life lessons that feel as genuine as the characters.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Light in the Hollows 5. Dezember 2012
Von David V. Myers - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This book is nowhere near "average." Not in content or characters. It's fresh and real about coaling mining in Eastern KY. or WV. and the unique culture in which that process takes place. It's an tale of a family and how they survive in this harsh and unforgiving climate of danger, poverty, and hope (in decreasing amounts as listed). It is also a study of trans-generational progression towards liberty of the heart and is told in a compelling and culturally sensitive manner. And, despite all of the gloom and doom, there are so very funny, magical, and even mystical elements that provide a wonderful fillip to the main story. A great read!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Black Sunshine, A Gold Medal Novel 7. Oktober 2012
Von TERRY MENGLE - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
It has been a long time since I was enthralled and amazed by a novel in the way this novel has done. Black Sunshine was the kind of novel we all hope to find and enjoy. It took me to an unfamiliar world of the coal miner and his family. It let me love and care for the characters that were so richly human that I will remember them forever. The only sad thing about this book was that it came to an end. Maybe we will see a sequel someday. I sincerely hope so!

If you haven't read it I urge you go get it. Please do not to miss this literary pleasure.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Couldn't sustain interest 13. Oktober 2012
Von Michaela - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I lost interest in this book and couldn't finish it. Perhaps someone with a frame of reference for the history of coal mining might relate to the scenarios better. Something traumatic has happened in the past, and one of the characters, a kid with mild autism, may have some form of clairvoyance, but the author's occasional hints at what happened left me feeling ambivalent. The protagonist, an alcoholic who returns to his hometown after many years, isn't very interesting, and neither is the kid who has mysteriously carved the main character's image in coal, even though they've never met. The clues to the past disaster weren't compelling, and I just didn't care enough about the characters to keep reading.
