The Black Orchid's cover is blown, and she is killed unceremoniously while infiltrating LexCorp. Usually not much of a problem; she could always grow another body. Only this time the corporation found out where she comes from and hunts her down...
Black Orchid is a rather obscure super heroine who was never paid much attention by the reading public, and unlike most characters, her origin hasn't been developed up to this book.
Neil Gaiman is a popular and talented Comic-book author. Still, this book lacks the certain something one can find in his Sandman. Although he cleverly manages to incorporate real-world topics like pollution or genetic manipulation into the comics world, the reader does not develop much of a bond for his characters, which is an element I enjoyed immensely in his other works. On the other hand, he manages to depict Superman's baddie Lex Luthor as the truly vile and evil character he should be in the big blue's book. Even though the book does not convince me story-wise, Dave McKean does his usual job of exceptional, yet easy to follow artwork. If excellent artwork can help you ignore a slightly disappointing story you should buy this book. (Dies ist eine Amazon.de an der Uni-Studentenrezension.)
