I will admit that I am a big fan of Conroe's other novels, the Demon Accords series. They are great paranormal novels with nary an "Edward" in sight. So I was expecting to enjoy his latest book and I was not disappointed. It contains just what I am looking for in my books: adventure, an original concept, and good writing.
The central question in this novel revolves around what you would do to save the life of someone you love, especially your child. One of the strengths of this book is that he gets the answer right as an individual and as a society. We would do anything and while that love can put us at great risk it is also one of the defining characteristics of our world. And as someone who has had to face that question in her own life the way the character dealt with it was spot on.
One of the few problems that I had with this book is that it presupposes a lot of knowledge that the general public does not have, especially concerning guns. I am a gun owner who has been married to a former Marine Corp Marksmanship instructor for a dozen years but there were times that I had to look over at my husband and ask "What the heck is ..." But other than that a great book that I really enjoyed.
