One October morning, Melissa watches a breaking news story on television. A young girl has been filmed by bystanders, committing a brutal assault in broad daylight in a downtown Vancouver Starbucks … and it looks like the girl is her daughter.
From this moment on, a story unfolds, so shocking, that it will hold you captive and you will find yourself reading faster and faster into the night.
Helga Zeiner, a 5-star bestselling Amazon author, delivers yet again an impeccably researched thriller—this time one that takes you into the complex world of child beauty pageants—with an ingenious plot. Just when you think you know the ending … read on, the ultimate surprise waits at the end of the thrill-ride.

Reviewers comments:
"Birthdays of A Princess" is a suspenseful, emotional, shocking tale that will leave you numb. This is definitely a 5 Star read!

Things I love about Helga's writing: Her research is top of the bar and her writing is some of the most incredibly realistic and dark I have read in a long time.

The plot is cleverly constructed, the story spectacularly written, keeping you on your toes till the very - and shocking - end. A psychological thriller in the truest sense of the word. Highly recommended!

I read numerous book per week, and yet this book is possibly one of the best books I've ever read. An intricately woven story with amazing last pages. A book I was able to lose myself in!

The characters were very well developed, believable and realistic, making this a totally breathtakingly fantastic read that will have your emotions soaring. Highly recommended.

5.0 von 5 Sternen When wishes don't come true - A+++ READ!! 19. Juni 2013

I pre-ordered this the minute I heard she had written another book. I was sucked in by Helga Zeiner and her book "Section 132". Her story was dark in that book and this one proves to be the same. The authors intense research is again evident and I cannot stress enough how incredible the writing is. Her second book is even more disturbing than the first. There were a few triggers, such as me wanting to curb stomp mothers who enter their children in beauty pageants...

Things I love about Helga's writing - She writes as if she is the one who has experienced these things. Her research is top of the bar and her writing is some of the most incredibly realistic and dark I have read in a long time. Whereas yesterday' review of Cold Killing was from the killer's point of view, Helga Zeiner is able to write from a victim's point of view invoking some of the most realistic emotional responses from me as a reader in a long time.

The story seems cut and dry once we find out who Tiara is. A former child beauty queen raised in a dysfunctional household. Child princess grows up and mother having moved back from the Pageant State of Texas and now is a brooding teen? Oh but this teen decided to go into a homicidal rage against a Starbucks customer for no reason and it is caught on everyone's smart-phones. It has your basic cast:

**An oblivious mother who doesn't understand how this is happening to her baby girl! (insert major eye-rolling)
**A seasoned detective (Mackenzie) who has a heart of gold (yes yes reverse of a western .. no hooker with a heart of gold.. oh wait YES there is but I will get to that later)
**An estranged family member, in this case Grandma, whose own daughter cannot even call her Mom... hmmm what is up with that?
**Bad guys.. bad guys galore ... a lot of wolves dressed in sheep's clothing it seems
**The victim... and man is this victim, who starts off as the perp, one doozy of a victim.

But Tiara, or Princess Tia, which she refers to herself to the psychiatrist when she finally ends her silence, is not scared she is finally in control. Some people would be scared about being locked up, but Tiara was grateful. Her storm was quieting and she had control over her life for once. Finally ridding herself of the last person connected to her pageant past, her mother, by refusing to have her visit.

Oh ... confused? Don't be, this is the most gut wrenching story and it is told in birthdays starting with her birth. Since she has a problem sharing verbally the doctor suggests writing out her memories. As she works through them birthday year by year the gaps and confusion pouring forth from dark corners of which are filled with both real and constructed memories from tales told by her aunt and mother. These memories both constructed and real get more frightening and alarming digging deeper and darker with each turn of the page.

Nothing about this book is a cookie cutter psychological thriller. The players may seem cut and dry but as the story unfolds we find they are not even close. A child used and abused for her looks, raised in isolation and made to be a pageant baby, toddler and girl till she was too old then used even more for "photo sessions" (cringe). Tiara's memory is muddled with cobwebs and drug induced nightmares. Despite all these roadblocks (and there are many many more), despite her crime, the victim manages to find stability on the streets of Vancouver B.C. with that aforementioned hooker with a heart of gold and in the trust of the curmudgeon of a detective and a forensic psychiatrist, two of three of the only men she feels safe with.

A thriller with breathtaking - should I say stealing - writing. Our author presents us with a victim which we cannot help but feel for, a victim who made me want to hunt down all those reprehensible mothers who think it is OK to dress up little girls like little beauty queens, creating a pedophile's wet dream under glitter and crowns. I was left with anger, grief, terror and shaky triggers which did not fire only because of how wonderful of a writer Helga Zeiner is.

The triggers: This is a story of years of exploitation, sexual abuse, of a child's trip down a memory lane which must be cleaned off and brought into the light in order for Tiara to move on and survive. Even you have never experienced violence in your life, or rape or sexual abuse you could be moved by the horrors presented. I am a survivor and can say this was a courageous act of bravery and love in these pages. Helga Zeiner handled each situation and scene without the use gratuitous violence, or sex but still so successfully and sophistically woven I won't be surprised to find this book becomes award winning.

There are not enough stars! Thank you again, Ms. Zeiner, for such an amazing literary thriller.

This book is billed as a "psychological thriller". Add "emotional" and "disturbing" to that list as well.

I need to clarify that I usually steer clear of this subject matter. I am still dealing with lingering PTSD as a result of my own sexual assault(s) in high school. There is a term that we survivors use for things that cause us to have a flashback or nightmares. We call them triggers. And I do want to stress that this book is one major trigger for anyone who has suffered any kind of sexual assault or exploitation.

That said, it is right on the money regarding PTSD type symptoms. For that reason, I kept on reading. I wanted to see if the portrayal of Tiara's symptoms was accurate.

This book starts with the assault that she commits, a heinous crime where she stabbed a woman repeatedly in the face, dislodging an eyeball and putting her in a coma. The story then slowly weaves back and forth between Tiara's journal entries while in custody and the investigation from the law enforcement point of view. It also peeks in on her mother and her memories and issues.

To help the psychiatrist treating her understand why she committed a gruesome assault, Tiara starts writing down memories, starting with her birthdays. She starts an entry for each of her birthdays and often the months leading up to it.

Through this technique, she is able to remember. Remember a lot. And the memories aren't pretty. I found this quote to be 100% accurate: "I have turned on a tap and now the memories are gushing out under enormous pressure." That is almost exactly how I described it. I went 8 years with ignoring the memories and hoping they would just go away.

Through these memories, the reader realizes just how disturbing Tiara's childhood was. Absolutely heinous crimes were committed against this poor girl. You almost feel that she is justified in committing her crime, once you learn the identity of her victim.

Many emotions rolled through me while reading this book. Sadness, anger, frustration, despair. I already didn't like pagents and I can't stand to see the tiny little outfits young cheerleaders and dancers wear. This book solidified the fact that my child will never, ever be in a pagent. Ever.

This book is a bit of a mystery and thriller in addition to the issues regarding sexual assault. I read it in two days. It kept me drawn in and the character of Tiara is so real.

I'm sure those who haven't had similar experiences might find this book informative, and it accurately portrays what survivors go through. But if you can't stomach lurid details it might be wise to skip it.

After reading the author's book, Section 132, I expected this novel to be another well-edited, well-written read; I was bitterly disappointed. I am not going to give you a book report, as you can get that in the book description, but will give a customer review stating my reasons for only giving this novel two stars.

It almost seems as though there were two different authors and/or editors involved in this story. In the first third of the book I found myself once again frustrated with incredibly sloppy editing and proofing, to the point that I could not get through a Kindle page without finding at least one glaring error. For example, using "me" instead of "my," or "to" instead of "too." I don't know about you, but enough of those mistakes result in distracting me from the plot and story. I hung in and found the middle third was smooth sailing with the story pulling me in so that I was able to emotionally connect and feel sympathy for the main character, Tiara, and looked forward to continuing the book. Then, the last third! A return of incredibly poor and distracting grammar errors and typos.

It really is a shame. I'm so surprised other reviewers did not have the same findings; perhaps there were far fewer mistakes in the hard copy. I certainly hope so. I'd like to read more of Ms. Zeiner's work, but will download a preview before I purchase.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Cleverly constructed plot, spectacularly written! 11. Juni 2013

This story grabs your attention from the beginning, as you turn page after page to find out the reason for Tiara's attack of this - initially - unknown lady. Tiara is an ironic name given to a girl who was manipulated and forced to win beauty pageants. The author paints a clear picture of the reality behind the world of (this) tiara wearing princess(es) - all that glitters is not gold!

Aunt Gracie manipulates and forces the little girl to earn `easy' money, first with beauty pageants, and when she gets too old, for `taking photographs' (read: pornography). Her mother is a weak personality who is just glad that auntie takes the brunt of the care for her own daughter. Both women are interested in one thing only: themselves. However, do not underestimate Tiara - even if no one has ever taken proper care of her in the past, she has learned to take care of herself - taught by life itself in a way that is only revealed at the very end.

Not all is as it seems, you need to be careful not to be put on the wrong track. It is full of suspense, evoking many different emotions as Tiara, with the help of her psychiatrist Dr. Eaton and detective Pete Macintosh, slowly unravels her past and the role her family has played in it all.

The plot is cleverly constructed, the story spectacularly written, keeping you on your toes till the very - and shocking - end. A psychological thriller in the truest sense of the word. Highly recommended!

A little note though, for those that are triggered by reading stories where abuse in any form is a huge part of the plot: the description of Tiara's life and the result of her abuse are very real and true, you might be better off not reading this book!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Birthdays of a Princess- Worth Reading! 31. Juli 2013

I knew that this was not going to be a light-hearted take on junior beauty pageants such as we see on tv, like the show Toddlers and Tiaras. But until I started reading, I didn't know how serious and suspenseful the tone of the novel was, and how addictive it would be to keep reading it. Ms. Zeiner has certainly done her research on beauty pageants and the guardians who remake their kids into spoiled and glamorous copies of their own childhood dreams. She also seems to have hit the nail on the head with the description of Tiara's psychosis and its treatment. From the opening scene when Tiara's mother Melissa is watching tv and realizes that it is her own beautiful daughter being arrrested for attempted murder, the reader is drawn into the harrowing world of the pageant tour. We get to witness the schemes and illegal activities surrounding the tours, the depersonalization of the young girls with use of painful procedures to "fix up" their tender faces and delicate hair, and hours of exhausting dance rehearsals. We feel sorry for the children made a part of it, and feel contempt for the parents who subject their kids to this for a chance at fame and prizes. This book was sometimes hard to read because we know this is fiction based on reality, and there is also sexual abuse that goes on behind closed doors. This might not be an easy read for everyone, but it is an interesting and suspenseful novel that sadly reminds us more of Jon Benet Ramsey than Honey Boo Boo. 4 stars
