This is THE BEST book on the subject-Bar NONE!!!!! 18. Januar 2004
Von Ralph DeMattia - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
I first got this book in 1976 and have gotten it every time it's updated, and I have only two complaints about it; 1) it only gets updated every 3 to 5 years and 2) it's so damned expensive! But once you open it (and it feels like an LA Phone book), you forget the price and just OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH at how fact-filled and interesting it it! It practically tells you the last time your favorite artist picked his nose! It has EVERYTHING! I only with they would update it something like every two years. Get it, along with the Albums and Singles books, and you really don't need anything else. This book is THE B E S T !

STOP STOP STOP 24. April 2007
Von Bill from St. Louis - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
This is a wonderful, amazing book. But STOP as this obsolete version has been superceded by "Joel Whitburn Presents the Billboard Albums" which updates the book through Dec 31, 2005.

Cool 13. Februar 2003
Von Jason - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
I've been on Record Research's list for many years, and this was my very first Pop Albums book I purchased. It's got several amazing features. The best feature is that you can see which albums made the Pop Catalog albums chart. Although all of the artists do not have their complete discographies listed (only the albums that were charted on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart are in this book), and not much facts and trivia under albums, I still think this book deserves to be on music lovers shelves. I hope in the next edition they will show what current albums that can be found on vinyl.

Almost too much information in this book 27. Dezember 2014

Wow, what a book. I got this older version of the book for Christmas and I'm glad I did. Since Alice Cooper ranks among my favorite artists of all time, I'll use his entry for most of this review. For each artist who had an album reach the charts, there is a listing of that album, the debut date, the peak ranking (number of weeks if it reached No. 1 or No. 2), the number of weeks it was on the chart, a symbol if the album went gold or platinum, the title of the album (of course), a price guide value (I could care less about this) and the label and number of the album (label is cool, I don't know anything about the number). Albums in the top 10 are highlighted and the top album (for those with a significant number of albums) is underlined. Above the album lists there's a small bio on each artist, And for those artists who qualify (Cooper does) there's an all-time ranking based on Whitburn's own formula. Cooper is No. 125. Apparently that's high enough for him to get a bio photo (Cooper by himself and not the group in this photo). He also has a listing of his top five albums prior to the catalog list.

Whew, that's already a ton. But there's so much more than that.

Below the albums is a list of each song on the albums listed above. They tell you which albums the songs are included. And for nice measure, for those songs that were in the Top 100, they are highlighted with the peak position listed. The individual songs are tiny print, but to accomplish this feat without making the book 20,000 pages, it has to be done. It's tiny, but I can read them just fine.

How much is included? Elvis Presley has the equivalent of two pages just to list his 104 Top 200 albums. And his list of songs take about 1 1/2 pages (like I said, small type). Like I said, earlier, it's almost too much. :)

Compilation albums are included as well. The Now series - apparently when this book was completed there were only six of them All are listed in this book. So it's not just artists that reached the top 200, but the compiliation albums as well.

In the back there are other lists. Whitburn has his list of top 500 artists. There's a list of top artists by decade and other trivial lists like most weeks at the No. 1 position. In the far back there's a list of albums which reached No. 1 in the order they reached No. 1. That's always a nice addition to all of the books.
The Publication of Record for Popular Music 28. März 2015

Most people who would buy the larger Billboard books would probably have some connection with the business, but for anyone who has a serious interest in the popular music of the last few decades they are invaluable. Though they also have published slimmer volumes of the albums that made the Top 40, they are far less adequate than the Top 40 Singles books because so many fine and important albums never made it to #40, whereas most singles that didn't are unimportant. Here you get practically the entire career of every major artist of the second half of the twentieth century, and where else are you going to get that?

Billboard was absolutely the number one periodical of popular music, with Cashbox a very distant second. The Billboard charts were the ones that mattered. Although there has been an attempt by Google Books to put complete issues of Billboard online, there are enormous gaps, sometimes twelve months or more. If you want the information, this is where to get it. Yes, a few complain about the small print, but what do you want, a World Atlas sized tome that would have to retail for $300.00? I confess to having to use a magnifying glass from time to time, but that's alright. It's larger than a standard book size and printed on good paper that doesn't let the other side bleed through. It just the charts, and I know some would like a descriptive text, but again, it would produce too big a book.

I bought this edition specifically because of the fact it has song listings for each major artist that tell you which albums have which songs. They had to abandon this in the newer edition, probably because another decade's worth of titles would make the book too large. so to me, this edition reached a certain high standard that will never be reached again. I also confess to not being very interested in much that has come out since 2001.

Remember, not long ago all of the Billboard books were out of print and eventually had astronomical prices. If you want any of them get them now.
