Are you a chart junkie? 1. Mai 2001
Von Ein Kunde - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
A fantastic little idea from the master of the Billboard charts, Joel Whitburn. I became interested in this book because I looked to revamp my 80's music collection (you know, lost in vinyl), and I had top 40 lists, but as we all know, all great songs DON'T make the top 40! Using this book spurred lots of great memories and gave me a great base to go to Napster and get back some of the great songs of my youth. If you're looking for stories, don't buy it, but if you want a visit down memory lane, and need some titles to get your Lost Hits of the 80's collection started, then this is the book for you!

How the eighties is documented in music 28. März 2007
Von Freddy Kasenda - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
As one who grew up listening to the music in the eighties, this book was the first in the series that I bought. The book itself contains not more than reproductions of weekly billboard HOT 100 charts from the first week of 1980 to the last of 1989. What makes the book interesting to me is that it brought back the good memories of the decade when I listened to practically each song ever made it to the chart, collected the records and stay tuned to the radio for weekly charts.

This book is probably enjoyable only for those who went through the decade in music.

Expensive, but comprehensive 1. Januar 2006
Von William J. Eichelberger - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
By the time the 80's rolled around, my Top 40 days had rolled elsewhere, but I still found the charts impossible to completely escape. I was still fascinated by the songs that may have recieved extensive airplay on non-Top 40 stations, but only managed to battle their way into the mid to lower reaches of the charts. Joel Whitburn's chart history books are a goldmine for anyone in my situation and also for anyone who just enjoys the trivialities of the music industry. The reason you don't often see these used is that those who buy them, keep them. Highly recommended.

Great seeing the old charts 30. November 2014
Von DTroppens - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
If you were one of those kids in the 1980s who never had a subscription to Billboard magazine, but went to your local bookstore to check out the most recent Hot 100 chart on a weekly basis, this book is for you. Joel Whitburn's gang recently republished the book so whether it is through amazon or recordresearch.om, you should be able to find the book for under $100 in new condition.

I love the charts. I love popping open a page, picking a debut song from that page and following it up and down the charts until it falls. It's cool seeing all the different formats the chart took over the decade. I didn't realize there were so many changes.

If there is one downfall it is this - all you are getting are the charts. The book doesn't say you are receiving more, but it would've been nice (even if it was just an annual two pages) of maybe a recap of that year in music. Maybe some trivia questions (they have some in the introduction) to try to give you a sense of that year prior to reading about it. Instead, all we get is a page that says the date of a week Billboard wasn't published telling us the chart was frozen (or unchanged). Basically, it's a waste of a page. Even if it was just a list of the artists who had the most Hot 100 hits that year, maybe the debut artists of that year, maybe a checking in (born in this year) or a checking out (died that year) would've been cool. But you get nothing like that at all.

But that's the only downfall - well that and maybe the price. It would be nice if this could be done for about $59.99 instead of $79.95 (price I paid for it at recordresearch). that said, I did purchase it, but if it was even another $5, I would've really seriously thought about not purchasing it. It was right on the borderline as it was.

If you have the cash on hand and love the old charts, get it.

Eighties Charts 10. Januar 2012
Von P Magnum - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Joel Whitburn's compilation of all the Billboard Hot 100 charts of the 1970's provides you with every list of the most popular songs of the MTV generation. The decade starts off with a 70's hangover of dance music to the new wave to Michael Jackson, Madonna & Bruce Springsteen taking the reins in the mid-years to Whitney Houston and other taking over the end. In between you get hair-metal, video stars and hip-hop all gracing the charts.
