Synopsis

Using the Japanese hake brush, obtainable from most art and craft shops, Ron Ranson demonstrates how, because of its nature and size, it forces the watercolourist to simplify the subject matter and thus distil the essence of a scene. He also discusses the dissecting and dramatizing of the subject.

Big Brush Watercolor 20. August 2009
Von Mak - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
I wish I had acquired this book at the beginning of my journey to learn watercolor. Ron Ranson's background,a native of the UK , an engineer by training, and a self taught watercolorist comes through in his writing and exposition of the subject. His command of the English language makes his commentary pithy and to the point with an appropriate amount of irony to help put things in perspective. His engineering background makes him explain the "Why" of various techniques that he has developed by experimentation. I bought a set of Hake brushes and set out to emulate his examples.the landscapes I produced in minutes were truly beautiful.

Ranson's techniques are not for those who wish to paint in fine detail or flowers and plants with botanical accuracy.

Big Brush Watercolor 2. April 2012

I had seen this book in watercolouring class and admired the illustrations from Ron Ranson and wanted to loosen up my watercolors. Upon ordering BIG BRUSH WATERCOLOR from Amazon I have been most pleased with what I am learning from this book...fewer strokes and the right colors can be magic. Ron Ranson is the mentor for Prince Charles in his watercoloring and I definately can see why the royal has chosen Ranson. If you are serious or just playing around with watercolors, you will want to invest in this book for your library. Big Brush Watercolor

A style I've been looking for 25. März 2013
Von K. Adams - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
Ron Ranson is not into detailed, photographic paintings. His style is somewhat impressionistic, loose and very believable. I've only been painting with water colors a few months, but I feel the examples and text in this book have helped me, perhaps more, than any other single source of instruction. He emphasizes a limited palette of only 7 colors and shows how to make this work to the finished painting's advantage. I've since purchased more of his instructions and watched his YouTube clips. Very good stuff, this!

Big Brush Watercolor 23. Juni 2008

This is a fine example of how to use the hake brush. It will teach you to loosen up your watercolors, and paint with an impressionistic style. Ron Ranson is an excellent instructor and explains much in this book. You will only be disappointed if you haven't read it.

This is a wonderful book. I love Ron Ranson's plain spoken teaching style. He stresses tonal values, the artist's responsibility to "design" the elements to make them more appealing by accentuating atmospheric distance, balance, center of focus, unity, etc. He talks a lot about how "fiddling" can ruin your painting and stresses using the larger hake brush as well as tonal sketches with your ideas already fleshed out to prevent said fiddling. I love his wise words on the importance of tonal sketches prior to painting and believe he is right on the $. I am working on my tonal sketches from photographs and it really does help me get a better idea of my job as a designer, how and where to counterbalance, etc.. He also has several interesting little quips in there regarding the minds of his students, what makes them tick, how artists think, etc. I find those bits very amusing and they really keep the book moving along nicely. Very readable and well written. Numerous color photographs with examples of how he distils the information from photos. Although this book is now 25 years old it is clearly one of the best "how to" watercolor books out there. I very highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the craft of watercolor!
