The bicycle continues to be one of the most useful, efficient, and 'planet friendly' means of transportation available 9. September 2010
Von Midwest Book Review - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
The bicycle continues to be one of the most useful, efficient, and 'planet friendly' means of transportation available. The collaborative work of bicycle experts and enthusiasts Rob van der Plas and Stuart Baird, "Bicycle Technology: Understanding the Modern Bicycle and its Components" is a superbly and profusely illustrated, 320-page compendium detailing all of the parts that comprise the modern bicycle and covers the complete range of bicycle types including road bikes and mountain bikes. Beginning with informative chapters on the history and anatomy of the bicycle, "Bicycle Technology" goes on to cover the materials used in the creation of bicycles, the basics of bicycle design, and then devotes specific chapters to all of the bicycle parts and systems from the frame and the wheels, to the steering and gearing, to brakes, seats, suspension, and so much more. Of special note are the chapters dedicated to power assisted bicycles and the future of bicycles. Enhanced with an appendix, a bibliography, and an index, "Bicycle Technology" is an especially recommended instructional resource and reference for personal, academic, and community library collections.

Descriptive, not a repair book 4. März 2011
Von John S. Allen - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This large and richly illustrated book describes at length to the lay person how bicycles work, but unusually, it is not a book on maintenance and repair, rather it goes further into technical detail.

It will be of interest to anyone who would like to explore the workings of the bicycle.

I must remark that there is some sign of haste in page composition e.g., captions switched for illustrations on the same page, and that I also found some statements that could benefit from deeper analysis e.g., on page 111, "...the top of the wheel...moves forward at twice the bicycle's speed, while any point on the horizontal centerline of the wheel moves at the bicycle's riding speed." I leave it to you to figure out the error. If concerned about such detail, move on to the next level of abstruseness and punctiliousness David Gordon Wilson's Bicycling Science, 3rd Edition .

Avoid the Kindle PC version 18. Februar 2011
Von Kingsland Don - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
As the title says the rating applies to the Kindle PC version of the book. I had checked a paper copy of this book out from my local library and liked it so much I wanted a copy of my own. The sections on the history of the bicycle and, especially, the physics and mechanics of the bicycle are much expanded from previous books by the first author. Although still brief, they should be read in detail by all bike riders. The maintenance portion of the book is thorough, at least as applied to the bikes I regularly ride and maintain. At this point the book rates five stars. The problem is that I ordered the Kindle PC version of this book. And that is where the trouble lies. I use and have been happy with previous Kindle PC books but this book is a disaster. The formatting makes it completely unusable; illustration captions are interspersed with text plus being remote from the illustration, sentences start and then disappear, words have a few of the beginning letters and then leave the reader to figure out where the rest of the word is (if it exists), the Table of Contents is randomly distributed across the screen, the math equations are . . . Well, you get the idea. To Amazon's credit they refunded my purchase price without argument. But the bottom line remains: Until Amazon corrects the formatting; avoid the Kindle PC version of this book.
