I bought this book with great expectations as I have more than 40 books of running, sport training and endurance.
What I have found here is a lot of information that is not validated, totally general, often recurring to general topics, lacking depth and with not much valuable content.
There are many other books with real knowledge but is not this one. If you are new to endurance training this will confuse you, if you have some experience likely you would prefer a more serious approach as other authors do.
Even heart rate zones present high doubts compared with real clinical studies.
The book is quite bad because can lead to many athletes to a wrong training approach.

I enjoyed the 1st section about how overtraining is literally killing professional and semiprofessional endurance athletes: type A personalities who try to balance 20+ hour weekly workouts with family and career and literally destroy everything in the process...yes, been there, done that...have many friends who are still doing it...

I also enjoyed the info about creating more efficient, smarter workouts-this section was actually a breath of fresh air.

Unfortunately, much of the rest of the book is simply bewildering and overwhelming. There' no question about Greenfield's passion about this subject. But even if you read through it (as I did) with the attitude that "I believe you Ben...everything you have to say...just tell me what I have to do"..ignoring the pages and pages of medical and scientific data, much of the advice is about the use of supplements and pharmaceuticals, expensive medical procedures, and the purchase of expensive/questionable exercise and health devices; as well as lots of "crazy uncle" advice: ground yourself to the earth's frequency when you sleep, wear magnetic bracelets, replace your shaving cream with $20/7 oz. tube of brown sticky paste to avoid getting poisoned, etc...

That being said, I waded through the book and found a few, valuable nuggets of info that more than justify the purchase price.

Use what works and discard the rest.

As an author of books on women's health, I often have to inform women that exercise has ruined their health, or at least has the potential to. So many people do exercise improperly or excessively that it scares me. Down time is important. Recovery is important. Re-fueling is important. And if you want to be the healthiest and the baddest of athletes, then serious science is important, too. Research. Help. Planning.

Fortunately, Ben Greenfield has done all of this for us.

I recommend almost no fitness books to my female audience. But this one is SO FULL of attentive detail to just about every exercise and health related hack I cannot help but recommend it. I even recommend it to people who are not athletes because it contains such a plethora of information on how the human body works.

Take, for example, problems with adrenal fatigue and mineral imbalances. Ben address insomnia in the book (of course) and two of the problems he addresses that cause insomnia are mineral imbalances and overtraining or stress. This is always the first section of books I flip to because I know these issues like the back of my hand. Ben nails the symptoms of the problems -- heart racing, pulse beating in your ears and throat, tired and wired feeling at night and during the day -- of adrenal and mineral related insomnia. I come across few health gurus who know the adrenal system so well, and for that I have nothing but profound gratitude for Ben and his work.

As well as just about a million other facts in the book and a million other attributes of it -- great clarity, profound research, insights and thoughtfulness from Ben. I'm a big fan of his list of "ten rules for becoming an ancestral athlete" which include 1) changing your lens, 2) being uncomfortable, 3) being comfortable, 4) work, 5) optimizing fertility, 6) eating the earth, 7) emptying the trash, 8) using science, 9) keeping a clear head, and 10) not fretting.

That's a list I can, and try to, live by. Thanks, Ben.

I've been about health and fitness for the past 15 years and have been a professional in the industry for 6 years. I've worked as a personal trainer, strength & conditioning coach, nutrition coach and now Holistic Life Coach both in London & LA. I've been a Men's Fitness model and have worked with many clients including an NFL team. I'm always interested in learning more about health and fitness to improve my life and others.

I came across Ben Greenfield's podcast about 9 months ago and I can honestly say that his podcasts have dramatically increased my knowledge about health and fitness. Due to implementing Ben's advice, I now sleep WAY better, don't get back pains anymore, have better sex and much more.

It was a no-brainer to get his (I pre-ordered it) and it's great! It's almost all of his knowledge crammed into a book. It's essentially a health & fitness bible.

Whether you're a serious athlete or just want to improve your health GET THIS BOOK! You will not regret it!

Save your money. I've got degrees in the sciences and have been an endurance runner for 15 years. Some of what Greenfield says is useful, but too much of it is useless pseudoscience and product placement. This is unacceptable for a book purportedly grounded in "science."

Foremost, Greenfield continually recommends products which he just so happens to sell on his website. For example SuperGreens and SuperBerry powder. At a mere $80 per container, the reader would assume it's a steal. From all the products he claims to use on a daily basis, you'd think he'd go bankrupt spending $80/day on supplements... unless he owned a supplement vendor... which he does. ;)

Let's take the #2 healthy mean he recommends. After looking up ingredients, it looks like a mere $15 for that shake. Ouch. Of course there are cheaper things out there like whole wheat bread, granola, etc, but those are unhealthy in his eyes, despite his recommendation of sodium nitrate laden bacon in several meals.

Then there are the BS recommendations. Take the Chinese herbal anti-jetlag supplement he loves. He lists the product's "five homeopathic ingredients." As anyone that can search wikipedia knows, homeopathy is a quack science that has been totally and utterly disproven in various scientific studies, but Greenfield didn't get the memo. In the same chapter he recommends holding onto a medal object to "ground yourself" for several minutes after departing an airplane. This is right up there with using dowsing rods to locate subterranean water.

On the training front, I love the claim that "only one long run is necessary to race a marathon." Really? Just 1? Sorry, but no. No. Serious skill at distance running is directly proportional to time spent in endurance activity, the more time spent over 90min the better. This tip stood out to me as simply iconoclastic.

As to the text's composition, many chapters appear to be hastily transcribed podcasts or converted blog posts. The chapters ramble on and on and read like infomercials, i.e. "learn the 10 secrets to X." Clearly many of the reviews the claim this is a concise and to the point text cogently laying out the secrets to training have not perused the text.

There's a lot of Gobbledygook out there mostly funded by Big Parma. Just read the labels about the side effects. Why not learn natural ways to up your game stay fit live a healthy and happy life. Ben does his do diligence and helps the rest of us along the way. In this book he shares years of reading research experimentation and practice.You will be better for it.
