Kurzbeschreibung

1. Februar 2007
Seasoned conductor Diane Wittry draws a comprehensive roadmap to a successful career in Beyond the Baton. With first-hand understanding of how the role of the conductor has changed across the years, she expertly examines the new set of duties-both on and off of the podium-that now fall upon the shoulders of the music director. From getting a job to fundraising and educational outreach, Wittry's comprehensive tips and strategies guide students and professional conductors alike through the leadership and organizational skills necessary for success. Numerous real-life examples illustrate vital skills for artistic leadership such as programming subscription, pops, and educational concerts; understanding the budget and the music director's role in funding the artistic vision; and presenting speeches, and radio and televised interviews. In informative conversations with the author, successful conductors Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano, and JoAnn Falletta offer tips from personal experience on how music directors can work successfully with orchestras, and what their roles are with the board and the community. With up-to-date information and extensive listings, the resource section provides valuable information that conductors use every day in a convenient and practical format. Wittry gives conductors easy access to contact information for national musical organizations, guest artist managers, music publishers, internet sources, conducting competitions, summer festivals, grants, and scholarships. Programming lists and sample contracts and resumes can also be found within these pages. A comprehensive, step-by-step guide to success in the conducting world, Beyond the Baton is an indispensable companion, and its advice will help all aspiring and practicing conductors make the most of their talent and training.

Pressestimmen

this is a terrific roadmap for those with eyes to see ... this is not just a guide to such mainline stuff as musical training, 'being organised', negotiating contracts and planning repertoire for different contexts. There's advice in such areas as how to handle orchestra board members ... and the thoroughly modern awareness conductors must have of their part in raising the funds that keep orchestras going. 5.0 von 5 Sternen awesome...a must have for conductors 11. April 2007
Von Silas Huff - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This book is mandatory for anyone who seriously entertains the idea of conducting for a living. It reveals many secrets you'll never learn in "conductor school." The author is trying to spare us all from years of learning on the job and making costly mistakes.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Beyond the Baton 25. Februar 2008
Von M. Boyd - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
I am not a conductor; however, I am a leader within a service organization. There are several leadership qualities pointed out in this book that apply across all disciplines. It's a good read, if you need a sanity check as a leader. I highly recommend it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic 22. August 2010
Von TJH - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Beyond the Baton is a tremendous resource! It has invaluable information and should be on every conductor's shelf as the "go to" reference. Both the less experienced and highly seasoned professional can benefit from the wealth of information and knowledge that Ms. Wittry shares. I am involved in the music industry, and have encouraged all of my conductor friends to purchase this book. It is excellent.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A must read! 20. August 2010
Von Richard - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This book covers subjects that any up and coming conductor will find invaluable. I found the reference section to be in-depth and useful. The book also goes over things that are only learned by experience and that a conductor needs to know to avoid mistakes when they first get an orchestra. An interesting look at the whole scope of conducting not just on the podium.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fabulous Book! 30. Dezember 2006
Von Marie DuBois - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This book is a must for anyone who wants to be a conductor of Symphony Orchestras in the United States. It contains an incredible wealth of information and a great resource section. I would buy it for the thematic programming section alone!
