From brunch in Bel Air to homeless in Hollywood…

Former actress Meg Barnes used to have it all: tony Beverly Hills address, Amex Black card, Manolos for every day of the month. Not to mention a career as a popular TV detective that made her glittering life possible. But her lifestyle of the rich and famous has turned into a reality show for d-listed starlets. Lost in her Louboutins, she has one man to thank: her con man of a husband.

Handsome FBI agent Jack Mitchell knows a suspect when he sees one—even if she’s as beautiful and gutsy as Meg. Meg’s ex “made off” with half of Hollywood’s wealth in an epic real estate scam. And Jack thinks Meg may have been involved.

Determined to prove her innocence Meg teams up with her quirky, movie-mad best friend to track down her fugitive husband and exact justice. But getting her life, and her career, back on track is harder than auditioning for Spielberg. Especially when her life is threatened. Meg has to trust Jack, the man who may want her behind bars…or as his leading lady for life.

After falling prey to a scam, Meg Barnes is hard up but still prideful. Although her remaining friends (many of her associates dumped her since they believe she's in on her husband's scam) would surely help, Meg sleeps in her car instead of accepting their charity. Just as things are starting to look up when the out-of-work actress lands a pilot, Meg starts getting harassing notes and suspects someone's following her. Despite the FBI's continued investigation into Paul's disappearance, Meg decides to hunt down her husband and finally prove her innocence.

The pacing of this comedic mystery is fantastic. Kathryn Leigh Scott of Dark Shadows fame beautifully incorporates elements of Meg's acting life with her daily struggles of maintaining the façade that she's not homeless. Down and Out in Beverly Heels has perfectly timed twists and reveals to keep the excitement going throughout the novel.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Romantic Suspense or Chick Lit? 16. Mai 2013

Format:Taschenbuch|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
Meg Barnes was a happy and successful actress till her husband was kidnapped -- or perhaps ran off with a lot of other people's money. Now she's jobless, homeless, and miserable.

Jack Mitchell is a handsome FBI agent who things Meg might have had something to do with her husband's disappearance... and you can tell exactly where this is going.

That's the problem with this book. The plot is formulaic, and there's nothing wrong with that. Instead of writing it as light reading, though, the author has chosen to try out literary devices -- for example, the whole book is written in the historical present tense -- that interfere with the progress of the story. We end up with a book that is neither substantial enough for a mainstream novel nor a brisk enough read for the genre.

The author's acting background (she was in the TV series Dark Shadows)gives her the inside scoop on the milieu she's writing about, and that provides some interesting local color.

This book had a good premise and good reviews, but after reaching 30%, I was struggling to keep reading and losing interest. It started out good, but the story lagged and was slow. I picked it up several times and tried to keep going, but finally decided to give up and move on.

This was recommended to me in an email from amazon as a romantic comedy. It was neither. I would avoid this book. Unless you want a heroine thas is dumb. A story that's sad, with characters that are crazy. If that appeals to you then this is your book. There was No comedy, and I definity couldn't say there was much romance. A little suspense. All in All, skip it, there are better ways to spend your time.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Reads like a cozy mystery 25. Juli 2013
Von Maggie C - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed this book. I definitely think this could be considered a cozy mystery as the main character, Meg Barnes, is trying to solve a mystery but she is not a detective at all. Scott's knowledge of acting and what goes on behind the scenes is put to good use and was almost as entertaining to read about as the main storyline.

I liked reading about Meg's former character of Jinx. The description that Scott gives made me think of a mix between Emma Peel from The Avengers and Magenta from Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was also funny that the Meg makes an appearance signing photos as a nod to all of the appearances that actors from cult classic television shows make nowadays. I felt that this aspect of the book was especially true to real life.

My copy of the book appeared to have the working title of "Jinxed". I think this would have been a much more appropriate title as it incorporates Meg's past acting achievements and uses the true meaning of the word "jinxed", as it sometimes appears that Meg might truly be.

I wasn't thrilled with the end of this book. It seemed like throughout it, Meg and Jack, the FBI agent, are at odds, even if there is some spark. However, at the end, they fall into each other's arms and are so worried that the other was hurt. It almost seems like some scenes where they get closer and seem more attracted to each other were edited out.

Overall, this is a fun read, especially if you're a fan of older television shows or the business of television. I can easily see Meg Barnes starring in a book series with Down and Out in Beverly Heels as the first book. I will definitely seek out the upcoming sequel and any future ones that are created.

I received a copy of this book in order to perform a review. All thoughts are 100% my own.
