Ein Kochbuch für jeden Tag. Rezepte aus aller Welt - multikulti und doch sehr amerikanisch. Ein echtes Muss für alle USA - Fans.

About a year ago, I developed a sudden unaccountable interest in cooking. I therefore found myself purchasing every major general cookbook I could find.

This was a mistake: "Betty Crocker's Cookbook" is really all I needed. There's a reason that name has the reputation it does.

In addition to the many glorious pictures (not just of finished dishes, but also of processes and arrays of easily confused items, such as nuts or lamb chops), the thing I like about this one is that is gives you "normal" if you know what I mean.

Suppose you want a recipe for marinara sauce, or lasagna, or breaded veal. This book will give it to you without anything bizarre being thrown in.

I hate how when you need a recipe for something, say "alfredo sauce," you go to your cookbook, and the closest they have is "alfredo sauce with chicken dumplings," or something strange like that.

Betty Crocker's cookbook doesn't do that do you. They give it to you straight.

I have bought this cook book in the past but it always ends up falling apart because of so much use. I bought one for my son who is batching it and then decided to get a new one for me, too (why not??) I love the way it not only gives you the recipe but also gives you pictures of what the finished product should and should NOT look like.

My only problem with the book is the plastic rake binding. It can break over time. However, the content of the book is super! Great for new cooks and old ones who have forgotten how to do things right! :)

This cookbook looks like a comprehensive cookbook but it's not. It contains some great recipes--from simple, country-style cooking to more sophisticated fare, along with some excellent kitchen tips. Even parts that might seem pretty simple and banal will end up having lots of useful info. There is an explanation of brining along with some wonderful recipes. There is info on smokers--and how to turn your regular grill into a smoker. Betty will help you get the crystals out of the honey and soften brown sugar quickly. There is a wealth of kitchen knowledge-all very well-organized and beautifully laid out. The problem? I think the recipes are sparse. For example, I had bought a lot of pork tenderloin on sale the week I bought this. There are only five recipes for pork chops or pork tenderloin. And two of those are grilling recipes. There are around two recipes for veal, two for lamb. There are a good number of chicken recipes, though. I was beginning to suspect that it was a new healthy slant that had caused the scarcity of the pork and red meat recipes until I noticed the desserts. If you are looking to make desserts, you will find plenty of recipes. I'm not sure if there will be recipe pages for sale in the future to flesh out parts of the cookbook. I like these recipes so much I would certainly consider that. This is a very nice cookbook. I love the information and the recipes that are there. Just don't expect it to be the only cookbook you'll need. If you cook most nights, you'll absolutely have to pull out Fannie Farmer.

I just moved out on my own and got this as a gift. At first I was very excited because I know it's a classic, but I was very uninspired by the recipes. But first I'll give the positives: the reference information is unbeatable. Everything from ingredient substitutions, to how to cut up a whole chicken, to a chart that tells you things like "1 medium apple" usually means 1 cup of sliced apple. I use the reference parts of the book very often. I also like that the book gives nutritional breakdown for all of the recipes, but many of them are high in fat.
The recipes are very typically "Betty Crocker." It's basic American food that reminds me of 1950's housewives and school lunches. Casseroles, things cooked with Bisquick and condensed soup, fake ethnic foods, and even a couple of Jello salads. If you follow the recipes the way they are, the flavors are not bad, but not WOW either. You'd have to figure out what extra herbs and spices to add to make it really great.
I've made countless dishes from Food Network chefs that are just as fast and just as easy, yet tasts a lot better because of the way they are seasoned.

I swear by the Betty Crocker Cookbook. I got mine before I got married (over five years ago), and I am always referring to it for tips, techniques and everyday recipes that you can't find in ordinary books/magazines. I kinda want a new one now 'cause it's even more detailed (I have the 9th Edition). Highly recommend it!
