Kurzbeschreibung

For some, Paris is home, for others, merely a dream. For Gaston, it is a bench, the anchor of his life. For Sue, a romantic city filled with scandalous, dark-eyed men, for Frank an all-consuming fire, for Mme Santinelli a ghost she'd hoped to forget. By turns humorous, bittersweet, historical or surreal, each of these carefully selected stories invites us to explore a different facet of Paris.

BEST PARIS STORIES brings together the winning short stories of the 2011 Paris Short Story Contest with works by Jeannine Alter, Bob Levy, Lisa Burkitt, Nafkote Tamirat, Marie Houzelle, Jo Nguyen, Julia Mary Lichtblau, Mary Byrne, Marie Houzelle, Jane M. Handel, and Jim Archibald.

"Exciting new voices from the winners of the 2011 Paris Short Story Contest" - Paris Writers News

SELECTED BY DISTINGUISHED JUDGES

I chose "The Way You Looked at Me" for its graceful writing and general subject - our differing points of view - and for its powers of observation, and astute cross-cultural detail. (JUDGE DIANE JOHNSON, author of Le Divorce)

“Hortense on Tuesday Nights” had a sparse, mysterious quality which engaged me. The point of view was culturally ambiguous - and distinctly Un-American - which I found refreshing. (JUDGE ELIZABETH BARD, author of Lunch in Paris: a Love Story with Recipes)

I liked the story for its realism, its knowing voice, its discreet sense of humor, its successful reliance on dialogue, and its confidence in its own originality. (JUDGE CHARLES TRUEHEART, Director of the American Library in Paris, on “Our Pharmacy” by Nafkote Tamirat)

I chose “My Sunday with God” because, in addition to being well written and having a strong voice, it felt very fresh to me. (JUDGE ANNE KORKEAKIVI, author of An Unexpected Guest)

When reading this story, I was struck by the narrator's voice, which took me to other times and other places. I admired how the author shed light on the plight of immigrants who come to France and the harsh realities they encounter on the way. (JUDGE JANET SKESLIEN CHARLES, author of Moonlight in Odessa, on “Brazzaville – Belleville Express” by Jo Nguyen

This is a story whose characters emotionally hooked us and we wanted to keep reading. Set in an earlier era added intrigue and grounding while capturing the French primal relationship with food. (JUDGES CHARLES AND CLYDETTE DEGROOT, on “A Pinch of Tarragon” by Lisa Burkitt)

EARLY REVIEWS

"Paris remains true to herself in this rich compendium of stories" - Frances Gendlin, author of Paris, Moi and the Gang

"Funny or wrenching, get ready to be moved by this literary feast" - Lizzie Harwood, Paris writer and editor

5.0 von 5 Sternen An unexpected pleasure: glimpses of another Paris 9. Oktober 2012
Von Artlover
Format:Taschenbuch
Best Paris Stories is easy and pleasant to read, and makes for an excellent company when you need a distraction. Some of the stories were, I thought, better than others. Some - like "Our Pharmacy" - were really excellent and surprising. Others a little too familiar, though still amusing. There is no overarching theme to the anthology, other than that they are set in Paris which I gradually realized I appreciated and was one of the joys of this little book. Some of the stories packed an unexpected wallop, and with others, I laughed out loud. I enjoyed this book and recommend it. It's fun to read and full of energy and strange insights. Bravo.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent collection 20. April 2013

The short story is the benchmark of excellent writing and this collection is no exception. Here the judges have chosen a set of skillful short-story authors who combine deep humanity with the most evocative of locations - can there be more?

5.0 von 5 Sternen Loved these stories that defy clichés about Paris 22. Januar 2014

These aren't the typical stories about Paris cafes and people having a jolly time. Some are dark, others are funny, some are both!
Great collection from some exciting new writers.

Quite a collection of vignettes of Paris. Loved Jeannine's story in particular. If you've ever been to Paris you'll love it.!!!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great gift for Paris lovers 1. November 2012

This is a lovely collection of tales about Paris. Some of the stories - especially the ones about romance - made me laugh, while others were thought-provoking or even sad. At first I preferred the funny ones, but on rereading I started to like the sadder, deeper stories better.
My favorites deal with immigrants struggling to make a place for themselves or visitors returning to Paris to seek something that can no longer be found. What becomes of a place, especially a very beautiful one, after the person one loved there is gone?
Different voices form an anthology of stories to dip into according to one's mood. Laugh or cry, I did both.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A collection worth buying 22. Februar 2013
Von susan laurent - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This collection contains many first rate stories. Every single one contained good writing, and I simply loved Désolée Monsieur, and Our Pharmacy.

On the otherhand, I found two or three rather boring, and wondered why they were chosen when the judges had over 200 summissions to choose from. Were the others really that bad?

I will buy the next collection; I am eager to see if the judges have changed there criteria.
