Kurzbeschreibung

Book four in the Zorn Warriors series.

Kidnapped from Earth and transported to planet Zorn to be sold as a sex slave, Shanna is one angry, frightened woman ready to fight anyone who tries to touch her. Raised in foster care, she’s not going to take any crap off some alien men no matter how big, terrifying or muscular they are. Before she can be sold, she’s freed by a huge, sexy Zorn warrior…a warrior with the most beautiful blue eyes she’s ever seen. Shanna demands he take her under his protection when she realizes she’s stuck on Zorn. Hyvin Berrr, the leader of Zorn, thinks humans are helpless and weak. Shanna decides to teach the big hunk he’s wrong by knocking him on his backside. He might think she’s playing but she’s trying to teach him a lesson. She’s not sure if she wants to fight her feelings for the sexy alien, though if a woman has to lose a battle, this just might be the one time to concede.

4.0 von 5 Sternen My favorite Zorn Warrior story yet! 13. November 2010
Von Jackie-the-Greyhound - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
For those unfamiliar with the Zorn Warrior series, and just to be clear what the genre is, this is an Erotic Romance novel using sci-fi as the background.

Human woman kidnapped from Earth is taken to far away place to be sold as a sex slave. Rescued by Hero, who happens to be the leader of the planet's male dominated war-like humanoid-enough-to-mate-with-the-humans species. Followed by misunderstandings and matings as the Hero and Heroine work it out. With some baggage, cutural differences, and angst thrown in to make it interesting, which it is.

So, my rating is based on how well this book, in the context of it's genre, does. This is not literary fiction. This is not chick-lit. This is not sweet or introspective. This is not hard sci-fi. It's all about the romance novel story and putting it in the sci-fi territory allows the author to have some fun with the facts of life, the universe and everything (bad joke intended).

Berrr's Vow is the fourth of the Zorn Warrior series and the choice of main male character was a great one. So far we'd seen three of the four sons of Berrr (yes, that's three 'r's) and I'd expected his fourth son's book here. Instead we got Berrr who is the most interesting male of the bunch. There was a little of a Captain Kirk moment--the leader of the entire planet was there to save the day when the gal from Earth needed a rescue. BUT, in the context of Berrr being the leader because he's the best warrior on Zorn, well, he does get to keep his hand in the action game, as he needs to keep proving that to stay on top.

The main female character, Shanna, is a nice change from what is too often seen. So many books give lip service to the 'tough' nature of their heroine. As though by saying she's tough as nails it makes it true. Not. I read those descriptions and then find the female who 'is so hot because she's tough' caves and is dominated almost immediately by that one alpha guy and/or the situation in general ("even though she doesn't want to, she can't resist his manly-man-ness and gives in ecstatically"). Sigh, can't stand that!

Shanna, on the other hand, kicks butt. And lots of other body parts. In Shanna's case she is perceived as a weak human, which she is physically, but she still gets in some good licks on her own behalf and does not give up. She was INTERESTING. She did have a few of those 'big misunderstanding moments' where she seems to assume her interpretation of events was the only way (ahem, you are on an alien planet....), but that's part of what makes a story!

There is a bit of the too-rapid acceptance syndrome, where the characters adjust so quickly and fall for each other awfully fast too. Of course it is a romance novel and it would be slow and boring if that took too long, so I do understand.

I also would like to know more about the society--how does the female doctor fit in to that hierarchy for example. Of course, too much of that type of thing and then there wouldn't be as much time for the 'fun' parts of the book. Those are minor things, which I would expect more from in other genres, but detailed cultural explanations or expounding upon the nature of the political structure are not exactly the point of this story.

The biggest problem I have with this series is based on the traditional male/female dynamic of the planet. Some of it gets explained but ultimately it all comes down to the female-as-chattel nature of the society. This grates at me in an otherwise interesting story, and though it is explained I still don't like that basic premise, or the general acceptance, even from the assimilated females from Earth (though they do throw a few monkey wrenches in). Well, that and the manly-man-sexes-you-out-of-your mind issue. That does happen earlier in the series.

That said, this is the 4th of the series and I do NOT recommend picking up here. Things just won't make as much sense. Start at the beginning (Ral's Woman). If you are like me, you will grit your teeth at one or two things, but overall, I found the story was enjoyable enough to make those moments a lot less important. There is a lot of fun being had in these books!

By fun I mean sex. Hot and detailed. Sex. And the nice thing about being on an alien planet--you can take liberties with, um, anatomy. That's all I'm saying.

I have really enjoyed the series and Berrr's Vow is my favorite so far. I do point out what I considered negatives so people can decide if this is for them (did I mention the explicit hotness factor?) and so people can know what they are buying. I will keep on reading this series and hope to see many more books about Zorn! Definitely recommended!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Awesome! 16. Januar 2011

I haven't read a futuristic/sci-fi romance in a while so I thought I'd give this one a read. I absolutley loved it! I now have a new favorite author and I plan to check out the rest of this series.

Berrr is married (I know, this worried me when I read it) but his wife is a cruel b*tch and lives apart from him. He takes in our heroine (Shanna) who has been kidnapped and brought to his planet. Zorn is an aggressive, male-dominated, fighting society, and the women are just as brawny and buff as the men. Despite being a "weak human," Shanna holds her own here. And Berrr is attracted to her because she's tough but also feminine and sexy. Nothing at all like his wife.

The only way to separate/divorce Berrr from his wife is for Shanna to fight her for the position. And having grown up fending for herself in foster care and fighting off bullies, Shanna is so kick-a**. The show-down with Berrr's wife - what a great scene!

This is a wonderful erotic romance. Page after page, I just wanted it to keep going. A keeper!

3.0 von 5 Sternen better than the last one, not as good as the first two 23. Dezember 2011

I agree with another reviewer that with the way the Zorn world is being further described in this book, it's just too heinous. I can appreciate that the author is conveying a male dominated world and there is something thrilling about a "woman being totally protected and cared for" but the Zorn culture has now just become little better than female enslavement. WTH happened when in the first two books it was talked about how women were not abused and yet in book 4, it's okay to pass around the house help for group rape?!!! The sense of Zorn honor just really doesn't exist - again what happened when Berr agreed that no Earth woman could be bound unwillingly and yet they allow it to happen in this book (and book 3 too). The inconsistency to the world building is not just annoying but also disheartening as one can only start to despise the Zorn warrior's world/culture and question why such strong female characters are willing to put up with it.

There is also something creepy about the early 30s heroine hooking up with a guy who has to be in his mid 50s at least (he's a grandfather for gosh sakes). If Berr's first wife was so nutty, then how come her kids came out okay (this didn't add up to me) not to mention that having 7 children with Berr didn't make sense to me from a loveless marriage standpoint. I think book 4 was a real afterthought to how the background story of the family was already set-up in books 1 & 2. I feel sad for how this series has faltered and don't know how it can recover with the way the world building has gone. This book could have been so much better if maybe this story and book 3's had been combined where it was Rever who had been stuck in a loveless bound marriage to a Zorn woman and it was Shanna who helped get him out of that marriage.

The shining part of this book is the heroine. Love it how she kicks butt!

2.0 von 5 Sternen Not up to standard 28. Mai 2012

I never thought I would find this author's books ever overly simple. But I've found one. This one. The heroine in this story boggled me.
Why a middle-aged woman that worked in a bar (where, i would imagine, social encounters were on a permanent constant) would have so much trouble retaining a rational mind-set or not having much of an ability to read people simply astounded me. Of course i expect the argument could be made that she was just kidnapped and about to be sold into sex-slavery and that she still had to come to terms with the fact that she would never be able to return to earth but for crying angels sakes flesh out those emotions in the work with better wording. She had a rough start to life and it never really got smooth but did time do nothing for her? NO wisdom with age? Even if hardened by equally hard life? I don't understand how can someone so mature (in the waning but still ) prime of their life could have so much angst, and fire (not saying she shouldn't be passionate but she's comes across as so far from level headed)? If I were kidnapped I would be damn cautious of every word I could understand and monitor actions and interactions as best i could. Would she have died to ask rational questions up front rather than after a spurred argument and two minutes before making out. This woman had moods that crested and crashed like tides during an ocean storm and I could hardly see her point. If anything it makes the male main seem /patient/.
I know Dohnner does better work than this!
Now thought I would never want to admit to it but this woman seemed so very low class that I feel almost ashamed to write about it. Almost. Perhaps it was because I was disappointed. I have the first book, Ral's Woman, and /loved/ it! Then I read this and found myself feeling like an elementary school teacher wanting to correct this heroine's speech every two sentences. I had no connection with the main female character, at all and top of that the wording throughout the book was too under done for the price /I/ paid. The fact that I avoided reading the preceding books in this series (save for the first)because it had to do with first wives/ex-wives/ previously married w/ever only to read this book was monumentally disappointing. As an inexperienced person myself I have no link to what goes on in most erotica or even most contemporary romance but a solid plot and like/relatable characters get me by every time. By the time i made it quarter way though the book I couldn't go any further. It's unfortunate that my last thoughts on this book were 'Berrr needs to hold a private auction for her to be sold off or hold a tournament with her as the main prize. Then he can find someone with just as much spunk but more worldly, more... suited for a king of his nature.' Dohnner does better. The 5-star raters must be die-hard fans.

But, the heroine just grated on my nerves. She was too in your face I'm a tough b*tch. And the whole part where she saw him getting some, that icked me. Once a hero meets the heroine, I don't want him doing that kind of stuff with anyone else.
